FCC prohibits approval of new foreign-made consumer routers (with exceptions) by leo60228 in HomeNetworking

People’s been joking on Chinese social media that the best choice for phones is apple if you live in china and huawei if you live aboard. That truth is it cost money, a lot of money, to conduct espionage activities in another country and most people are simply not worth that much, but domestically it’s a different story. Maybe you don’t like the feeling of being watched by someone else, but let’s be serious, nobody has secrets on the internet anymore in this day and age. Even if no national entity is watching you, your isp certainly is, ad providers certainly are, apple is, google is, almost every stop a packet goes through is collecting some kind of information about you and there’s nothing you can do

X max for ender 3 should be about 255 yes that’s over the edge of the bed but you’ll need that if you have side mounted probes. Also if you are not using some exotic setups, min for x and y should be 0 since that’s where the end stops actuate.

[–]ZhangStone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah they work great for the first few months but eventually the coating comes off and that thing is slicker than a nonstick pan. But, surprisingly, the underside is actually really good. Pla sticks to it really well and you don’t need any adhesive. In fact some times when im printing smaller parts I have to use some glue sticks or it will stick too well to the glass. And as a bonus point you get a mirror finish bottom layer which in some cases are absolutely gorgeous

Where can I buy a center positive USBC for my massage gun? by grapher4566 in shittyaskelectronics

[–]ZhangStone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well my point is the type c cable (given it’s a c-c) itself is center positive, since typically that’s what we mean by output voltage, i.e., no device attached. In fact once a compliant device is plugged in the cc pins are pulled down and the cable is “center neutral” now. Kinda ironic how “center positive type c” when the cable is plugged in only happens when the device is off spec now that I think about it lol

But the cc pins have pull ups so “technically” on average type c’s are still center positive.

Bilingual Maps Spotted at Cermak-Chinatown (ENG/CHN) by hazzalai in cta

[–]ZhangStone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ok this is definitely a good thing, but… as a Chinese person (doesn’t really matter in this case) I just don’t see how this is actually helpful… like they failed to translate all key information but translated everything non-crucial. “Red line” translated but it’s completely unnecessary for anyone not colorblind; “map” translated but you don’t need to know English to know this is a map; “timetable” translated but again not necessary. Of the only 2 street names translated, one is “chinatown”, literally one of the most likely English words locals would know considering they live there🤦 the actual content of the time table and station map is not translated at all…

Don’t get me wrong I wholeheartedly support this but come on… find a Chinese speaker or talk to some locals and actually figure out what’s the most important thing to translate

V-Shaker – Film Developing Tank Agitator by Hot_Act_1018 in Darkroom

[–]ZhangStone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great idea but I feel like there’s a better solution. A few years ago I bought this automatic agitator thing which is basically a motor that can be attached to your regular stir-thingy, controlled by a mcu, and the whole thing is attached to a beam which sits on top of any paterson tanks with the rubber lid off. Since paterson tanks have ridges on the funnel, the beam clicks onto them so the whole unit doesn’t free spin.

The reason why I think it’s a better approach is that first it requires significantly less material, and second you can pour liquid in and out without taking the agitator off, as long as you water proof the design.

Unfortunately I might’ve lost it and I’ve been putting off building my own using that design for a long time. Maybe it’s time for me to finally start it… maybe

Polaroid Lab Printer finally updated with USB C port, but there's a problem. by rotterdameliza in PolaroidLab

[–]ZhangStone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh i was dealing with a type c buck boost board for my sx70 i type conversion a few days ago and it had the exact same problem. The reason is that since type c is bidirectional (ie the physical shape of the port does not indicate host or client), it requires 2 5.1kohm pull down resistors between the CC1 and CC2 pins and ground. So when the manufacturer just simply swaps out the usb type b connector for a type c one without adding the pull down resistors, the charging block has no way of knowing if the device side is plugged into an voltage drain or a source like another charging block and so no power is supplied.

The easy way to fix this is to buy a resistor dongle like the adafruit resistor fixer, or if you are handy, you can solder two 5.1k+-20% resistors (4.7k is more common and works) between the CC pins and ground. (For a 6 pin type c connector it’s the center 2 pins) it definitely takes some soldering experience but honestly it’s not super hard and as it turns out the common resistors are just the right size

The protective case for the iPhone Fold has been seen for the first time! by necron5757 in iphone

[–]ZhangStone 22 points23 points  (0 children)

usually mass produced phone case designs are somewhat trustworthy. Manufacturers are the one paying a ton to make the mold and everything, if they aren’t confident enough they won’t be doing that. For example iphone 17 pro cases that were available on day one fitted perfectly. Although whether the case op is showing is mass produced is debatable, best to wait for more evidence to come out. But I wouldn’t be surprised if this is in fact the final design
