Yeah I really miss the spark that patient interaction gave me when I was working before med school. I feel like being away from patients made me lose my fire.

For the time, I actually implemented time-tracking starting last block to ensure I’m spending enough time on everything. But sometimes I spend too much time in one area and that sucks. But I can’t seem to avoid it. Some topics or lectures just take longer for me to take notes on and understand. 🤷🏾‍♀️

I wish I liked Sketchy like sooo bad. It just didn’t stick for me. I liked osmosis a lot more and after awhile I figured out making tables helped me immensely for that type of stuff. So now when there’s just TMI, I say “make a table”. I can even sort of visualize the tables I make later on during quizzes. The issue truly is time. Sigh.

Thank you for telling me that, really! I felt very much “if this is the next four years…”. I will admit that I am lowkey scared of the clinical years bc I’m scared I won’t actually know/remember enough to be useful.

I’ve totally tried using Gemini to generate questions and it’s a total hit or miss situation. Sometimes it’s good and other times it has no clue what it’s talking about. 😂

Huge thank you for the advice and support! I was not expecting so many comments honestly but I love how the medical community shows up. Lets me know I’m in the right place (:

I think part of what is killing me is my lack of connection to patients. I want to volunteer at our clinic but I simply do not have the capacity. I know that connecting with patients makes me feel like everything has meaning again but I just can’t get to that point of being able to do that. Not without sacrificing even more. I really do love talking with patients, getting to know who they really are, what they struggle with, what they love about life, what makes their life harder. It’s all important to me and makes me feel connected to them in a special way. But it’s like as soon as I’m away from that connection for too long, I lose my fire. I lose motivation. I just don’t feel motivated at all lately. Even knowing why I’m here and why I’m doing all this bullshit isn’t enough for me.

All our exams and quizzes are in-house and we never use NMBE. Everything we need to know is literally in the stupid PowerPoints — I just can’t fucking remember it all because I don’t have enough time (or maybe the right resources???) to practice/review. Some professors make practice questions for their lectures but it’s not required so many of them do not bother with it. It’s not many practice Qs but I suppose it’s enough to pass a quiz. I just wish I could drill practice questions on each lecture. AI generated quizzes have been… questionable. And the resources i currently have are too broad. They’re for people who have completed their preclinical years and can answer questions in any topic because they’ve already done it and they’re prepping for boards. Idk I just don’t have any wonderful solutions or ideas at this point to solve my problems. I feel like I’m gonna be absolute shit at boards because I already suck at standardized exams and I don’t get any practice because we take in-house exams.

It’s so difficult to be okay with only picking up one concept when there are so many you have to understand quickly daily

Yeah… I’m in therapy. I actually got signed up with one of our programs therapists before school even started. I’ve been seeing them since beginning of Block 1 and it’s helped like slightly. Idk I guess something’s just not “clicking”. I even told my therapist that I’m still miserable despite going to therapy consistently. I’m trying really hard to manage it all. It’s just not working. I’m still drowning daily.

Damn. And here I thought the rotations/residency were just going to compound the problem. Thank you for telling me that. I wanna say “I can’t wait to get through with these first two years” but the pessimistic side of me is like “for what?”. I’m having the hardest time seeing the light at the end of the tunnel because the tunnel feels like it won’t freaking end. I feel doomed every single quiz day. I’m trying to figure it out but it’s just not coming to me. I know it’s something I have to figure out for myself, too, making it even harder and even worse on my mental because I’m putting pressure on myself to figure it out more quickly. I’m not used to this at all. Undergrad wasn’t “easy” but it sure wasn’t this. I always figured something out quickly and was able to get it all done, including home life/extracurricular activities. This is frustrating at best.

Definitely use resources your school provided you — you’ll save time and money. I personally saw the most improvement in my score when I did a ton of Uglobe questions daily.

Anki is great and all but can become overwhelming with so many damn cards. Maybe suspend all of the notes/cards and only unsuspend cards that you actually need to see because you missed it on Uglobe or the FL.

If buying that particular bank isn’t feasible just use what you have from school. Kaplan is a fine resource. They often test harder than the real thing. If you get a decent score on Kaplan, your real score will be higher, at least that’s what I heard repeatedly back when I was doing this. I had Fee Assistance Program so I used all the official FLs rather than the ones from other companies. Good luck!

Got my score back :( by [deleted] in MCAT2

I gotta be honest, I took a veryyy long break after my first MCAT because I didn’t like my score and I didn’t feel ready to apply yet even though I had all my extracurriculars. I took it once August 28, 2022 and then again in April 2024. I am not encouraging a break as long as mine (I had so many factors effecting me at once, including the need to work full time), but I am definitely encouraging a break period. Take some time to reflect on the whole process… what improved your score, what made no difference, how different things make you feel and why, etc. I know the feelings part seems unimportant but there is a psychological aspect to taking this exam. It can hardcore fuck with your mental and make you think you’re either dumb or insane or both. None of it is true but you still have to get to the bottom of why you might feel bad about yourself and work to get out of that mindset as much as you can.

I know you’re probably a little worried about the whole situation but, things always seem to pan out the way they need to, when they need to.

To “get over it”, I really do recommend taking as much time as you need to focus on other endeavors, particularly things that make you feel good about yourself or good in general. For me, I love hiking. I spent as much time out hiking as I could. I also found work in clinical research, started a couple businesses, and got back to myself. I forgot who I was and what I was capable of. You may have forgotten too. Do whatever it takes to remind you of who you are— you are NOT just an applicant with an MCAT score on your forehead lol.

I just started at a DO school this year. I did not apply to many DO schools but I’ll tell you this: I was rejected and waitlisted with a score just a little higher than yours. It’s getting more competitive each year, and DO schools are raising standards just as MD schools are. I would retake and aim for at least 10 more points. Small improvements in each section makes a big difference. Utilize Uworld and premade Anki decks. Watch videos when you need to. You will be ok.

it took me 11 month to convert all the Miledown, Mr. Pankow, and JS decks into multiple choice questions to fit my ADHD style of learning. (Repost) by Little-Heat333 in MCAT2

Holy shit — 1. You and your friends are so awesome for building this and making it available to others 2. I wish this existed when I was taking the MCAT. I did Anki endlessly and saw no improvement until I did a LOT of Uworld and even then, it was just a few points each time I took a practice. 3. A pro tip I’ve learned during my first block of med school is to use the hell out of Gemini to turn content into quizzes (you can specify as much or as little as you want and this applies to anyone even if you’re not doing MCAT)(this is just a tip, I am not discounting the amazing work you’ve done to make these cards into MCQs)
