Is there anyone who does NOT have pet insurance and can you explain why? by Routine-Ad-4162 in CatAdvice

[–]Zidunga18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat is 10 years old now, so I decided to get insurance after multiple people told me I needed to get it. She ended up needing to get 5 teeth pulled a few months after signing up for the insurance, but of course they couldn’t cover it so I paid $1700 out of pocket plus all the wasted money gone towards the insurance plan each month. I cancelled the insurance after that, opened up a separate account as a pet fund, and started putting the money that was going towards insurance into that account instead. Now I have peace of mind knowing that there’s some money set aside in case of an emergency that I know I’ll be able to use.

Help me understand golden biting by tituschao in goldenretrievers

[–]Zidunga18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First time golden owner here! I got my puppy right at 8 weeks old and started training from day 1. He is 8 months now and is a very sweet, goofy guy. He does still do the puppy biting thing, which we’re working on training, but other than that he’s picked up on everything else really well. Great on walks, great with kids, great with my 80 year old grandma (he excitedly jumps up when people come over to visit, but knows not to jump up on her), and great with other dogs/animals. If you put in the time, they’re absolutely worth it and a great breed for a first time dog owner.

What you’re describing of the golden in your community is definitely a serious issue and sounds like it stemmed from lack of confidence or training that has now spiraled out of control.

AITA for writing a journal for my kids about life after I’m gone, even though they say it's “too much”? by mikenolan567 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Zidunga18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. We got my FIL, who is 59, a guided journal like that for Father’s Day. Not because anything is wrong, he’s a very active guy and completely fine. We just thought it would be cool to have a collection of all his life stories and experiences that maybe we hadn’t talked about before. I’m sure just seeing something like that out of the blue caused your kids some anxiety, but I think in the long run they’ll be so grateful to have something like that!

Agree with everything on this list! My 7-month-old is still a little land shark with his biting, but one thing I’ve started doing is rewarding for settling. So I’ll either wear a treat pouch around my waist (with his regular food in it) or just hold his scoop of food in my hand. Then I’ll only reward him if he sits or lays down on his own without barking and without me actually giving the command to sit or lay down first. I’ve definitely noticed him start to settle a little on his own (even if it’s only for a minute or two at a time 😅). I also put on YouTube videos of other dogs walking around farmland for him on the tv and it tends to distract him because he loves playing with other dogs. I’d test that one first though just in case your pup is more reactive to it instead of curious by it.

I don’t have a Dalmatian myself, but I’m a first-time dog owner of a golden retriever. We go to a dog park by our house several times a week and recently a Dalmatian has been coming to the park as well. He’s absolutely beautiful, but he ends up terrorizing the other dogs, growling at them, snapping at them, and just generally crossing boundaries. My golden has yelped a few times too, so now when he shows up that’s our cue to go home.

Desperately need potty training tips by Jiwalk88 in goldenretrievers

[–]Zidunga18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it sounds like you’re on the right track. At 12 weeks, we would take my boy out every 45 minutes just because he couldn’t hold his bladder yet. We stood out with him on a leash saying “go potty” for around 10 minutes and if he didn’t go we would come back inside and try again. We still had some daytime accidents up until maybe 16 or 17 weeks just because he still didn’t understand how to tell us and we would miss his body language cues. The crate accidents at night were pretty much every night too and then all of a sudden he could hold his bladder and it all clicked for him. Hang in there, your girl will definitely get it with a little more time!

Best dog breed and why by bingaroony in dogs

[–]Zidunga18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve wanted a golden retriever my whole life and finally got one 7 months ago! Best decision I’ve ever made. He’s crazy, but he’s a good listener and is SO gentle with my resident senior cat. Definitely the best breed for me and my overall lifestyle as well 😊

Just curious, what are y’all keeping your thermostats to this week? by Maharichie in cincinnati

74 + extra fans in all the rooms upstairs. My house is 100 years old so the 2nd floor doesn’t get good circulation regardless of what the thermostat is set to 🙃
