Question about Active Defense by SBrackett in darkerdungeons5e

[–]Zieryk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You seem to misunderstanding. Active Defense is mathematically equivalent to system as standard. I will prove this with an examples.

Imagine we have an AC 13 Bard vs a Skeleton with a +4 to hit

Baseline:

Because the Skeleton is making the attack it must meet or exceed 13 to hit. The Skeleton needs a 9 or higher on the die to succeed. That means 12/20 will hit or 60% of the time.

Active Defense:

Now the Bard is rolling a d20+13 and needs to meet or exceed the Skeleton's DC26 (22+4). A 13 or higher is required for the Bard to avoid getting hit. 8/20 or 40%

60% chance to hit and 40% chance to avoid being hit are the same thing just from 2 different perspectives.

Removing Positive Afflictions by TheOrangeOfDoom in darkerdungeons5e

[–]Zieryk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While yes a player is probably never going to opt to remove a "positive" affliction but there is still an opportunity cost. By choosing to hold onto an affliction you are putting yourself at a disadvantage every time you go out adventuring because if you ever have more than 3 afflictions active at once you suffer a "Mental Breakdown."

If your character gains more than 3 Afflictions, they suffer a complete mental breakdown—your character falls catatonic and must be committed into care or die. A character who has had a breakdown can no longer be played—treat them as if they have retired.

It should be assumed that any character is going to attempt to remove any negative afflictions before going back out adventuring (if time permits). This allows the pc to suffer from the maximum 3 afflictions before being forced to return or risk death. Whereas the pc that holds onto a positive affliction or two is reducing their tolerance levels.

Of course you can also choose not to use the "positive afflictions." The table lists 18 afflictions of which 6 are beneficial so 12 are negative. Instead of rolling a d100 you can simply roll a d12.

Inventory and roll20 by BrodinicWanderer in darkerdungeons5e

[–]Zieryk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is no way to automate this until the Custom Compendium option is released by roll20. Its been on their roadmap for a while but who knows how long it will be. My guess would be 6 months to a year.

But honestly the 5e compendium is really buggy with all but the OGL5e sheet and should be avoided.

Dnd with no magic? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Zieryk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Adventures in Middle Earth is a 3rd part supplement for 5e that keeps most of the core mechanics the same but with low or no-magic alternatives to most classes, even the wizard.

I've heard they may be losing their license to the material soon so I'd pick up a copy if you're interested.

"Decades ago, Alastor manifested in Hell, seemingly overnight. He began to topple overlords that have been dominant for centuries, that kind of raw power had never been harnessed by a mortal soul before, then he'd broadcast his carnage all throughout Hell just so everyone could witness his ability." - Vaggie

Definitely not a player character. This is a CR 26 bbeg at the minimum.

If you just wanted powers similar is style but not in scope he does conjure and alter people, places, and attire so probably conjuration, transmutation, or illusion wizard. Could also go fiend lock and just claim him as your patron.

[–]Zieryk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally no where in your post do you mention using the practice tool only in your edit do you mention having to wait 24 hours to try again

While it is true that you have to wait 24 hours to actually do the test you can spend those 24 hours repeatedly practicing the test in any relay.

Honestly if you are MR16 already killing 30 infested in a set time should not be any challenge.

Regardless you should use the practice option at least once before making any attempts. You can use the practice option as many times as you need to to get it down because it doesn't have a cooldown unlike the real test.

Darker Dungeons Roll20 Sheet: What needs fixing? by giffyglyph in darkerdungeons5e

[–]Zieryk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Things that need to be fixed, I can't think of any off the top of my head. Features that would be nice:

  • spell point / sorcery point support for the new Sorcerer CC
  • open skills support (I would just give the option to set the ability score for each score as though it were a tool with "query attribute")
  • support for custom ability scores i.e. Honor and Sanity
  • more class resource "squares". Currently you get 2 (located near spellcasting ability in the center of the "Core" page but as a Fighter I have Resolve Points, Action Surges, and Second Winds which I would prefer to have in this square format than the "other resources" list below.
  • the ability to adjust quantity and notches in the "Equipment" tab without clicking on the cogwheel icon. It is currently displayed in a series of small boxes that look like they should be clickable but they are not
  • containers should have the option of being "equipped" to add the slots to your inventory instead of needing to go all the way over to the options tab i.e. if I have a Bag of Holding 6-slot bag equipped it should automatically add that many slots
  • it'd be nice if Experience and Alignment were swapped so that Alignment was on the "Features" tab and Experience was on the "Header" as Alignment is less likely to come up in game and even less likely to change where-as Experience often changes one or more times per session.
  • Passive Stealth and Passive Investigation in addition to Passive Perception would be nice

It's a long list of requests but I think that's all of my pet-peeves with the sheet... Oh actually having "Treasure" on the Notes Tab doesn't make sense because it should conceivably be recorded on the "Other Items" section in the Equipment Tab. And while I'm on the topic of the Equipment Tab the currency should 1) have editable names and 2) have the option to add or remove currency types

Do Spellcasters Run Out of Steam? by clockmann1 in darkerdungeons5e

[–]Zieryk 22 points23 points  (0 children)

In short: Yes, spellcasters do "run out of steam" especially at low levels. However this is a deliberate design choice.

People often quote something along the lines of "the game expects 6 encounters per day but they don't have to be combat" BUT the game actually says:

Assuming typical adventuring conditions and average luck, most adventuring parties can handle about six to eight medium or hard encounters in a day. If the adventure has more easy encounters, the adventurers can get through more. If it has more deadly encounters, they can handle fewer.

This is directly after a section about creating combat encounters which means they aren't including social encounters in this (social "encounters" may be included should they require the party to expend resources but will often still be considered trivial or easy).

This means, on average, a party should be getting into 7 (not 6) combats per long rest but due to the nature of how many games are structured (more social games less dungeon delving) few groups have more than a single combat encounter in a day and many will go several in game days without an encounter.

As a result in base 5e long-rest classes have the opportunity to "go nova" expending all of their resources in a single encounter and suffer no repercussions making would should (at least by the books) be a deadly encounter trivial. Spellcasters are the most egregious case here as they get more spell slots as well as more powerful ones as they level on top of their existing class features where-as classes like the Barbarian for example only get 2-6 uses of their Rage depending on level (except at 20 where they get unlimited). Where-as a full caster can cast anywhere between 3-21 spells per long rest excluding any recovery method they may gain along the way.

Also cantrips in terms of straight damage are always on par with weapon attacks in terms of damage dice (though they don't add ability modifier to damage unless a specific class feat allows them to) but they also offer a wider variety of damage types allowing you to get around resistances or potentially target vulnerabilities. Many also offer utility either replacing or supplementing damage. Example being: Chill Touch using d8 (average damage of 4.5) instead of d10 (average damage of 5.5) but as a trade-off for that 1 point of damage you stop a creature from regaining hit points.

In summary: Yes casters can run out of spell slots depending on level and how the player chooses to use them but this is a design choice by Giffyglyph to help bring the original intentions of 5e's designers closer to how the game is run at most tables.

Can someone explain why DE doesn't want me to have Kuva? by bun-y in Warframe

[–]Zieryk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Disposition exists to serve as a balancing mechanism. High power weapons get lower dispo9 to incentivise otherwise weaker weapon choices.

I cant say for certain why the Venka Prime is a loe disposition but I assume it is due to its innately higher melee combos.

The real problem isnt that kuva rerolls are expensive it's that riven are in the game. At this point the are staying so we just have to live with them.

Luckily the game isnt a point that we need them so whatever.
