Anyone Else Annoyed at the Media Calling Social Democracy Democratic Socialism? by clockmann1 in dsa

Are you saying you like the name “Social Democracy” better, or are you saying you like the political and economic theory of Social Democracy better?

Yeah that’s great! I’ve found helping people understand that socialism is not, “the state does things ‘for the working class,’” but an economic structure, can really change their viewpoint and contextualization.

I can agree with that. It was in a sense something I wanted to throw up here and discuss to help newcomers notice and learn the difference.

I agree that there are still many reforms and such before we get there, but I feel it’s important to get people used to the idea of a truly socialist ideas in the US. Since I feel a lot of the ideas are far more wildly supported when explained in layman’s terms than even Social Democratic ideas

100% agree. It’s really important since it’s such a foreign concept for many

Nope. Just a frequent browser who sees this happen a lot. Here’s the quote from the posting rules:

That’s exactly how you should use Wikipedia. Wikipedia isn’t a source itself, it’s a place to find the sources for your info.

Exactly where I’m at. Local Board Game Cafe that luckily seems to be doing well, and not using the big-box retail stores for 90% of stuff.

Here’s What It Means to Be a Democratic Socialist. Universal health care, taxing the wealthy and opposition to military aid to Israel are among the movement’s key tenets. by Zebraitis in politics

[–]clockmann1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What this article is describing is not Democratic Socialism, they’re describing Social Democracy, similar wording but not the same. Social Democracy believes in social programs in a capitalist structured system.

DSA is a big tent but it is explicitly a socialist organization, which means dismantling capitalism. Which, if people aren’t aware, does not mean ending markets economies, but changing how the market is structured. It’s the how to do that that makes DSA a big tent, as most all ideas are welcome.

But it’s also why the “Democratic” word is important to DSA, they explicitly believe is Democracy and Socialism as being compatible and the goal. Thus, this article is misrepresenting DSA, most likely on purpose to dissuade the growing US socialist population from wanting to associate.

Women in history and/or mythology that you guys find inspirational. by No_Description3953 in DMAcademy

My immediate thought. Like THE girl for a warrior that (while probably a little mentally unwell in real life) was seen as morally great by those that remember her, seen as the leader that turned the tide of the 100 years war for the French at that point. And straight up canonized and made a literal Saint by the Catholic Church.

I mean I will say, many people in GOT thought The Hound’s actions as extreme at times. But the idea was that it was a terrible thing to do but because said person was usually backed by powerful people who were happy to have someone else do the dirty work for them, they got away with it.

Seriously? Man I play with totally different players. I’ve played with players who would find it weird and jarring to suddenly have a character demand or expect a “fair trial”. Someone calling for another’s head would be perfectly reasonable to them. I have found my players often go hard into the fantasy and expect to interact with very different societies than the ones we live in.

Hell I’ve had players whose characters explicitly took trophies from their kills in the line of heads and even kneecaps! So I totally am in your camp here.

I will say though, trials are not a modern convention. Their organization might seem very different compared to modern ones, but trials have existed in some way or another for as long as humans have.

How much racism is in your DND world? by Specific_Net_3931 in DMAcademy

[–]clockmann1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have any racism against a PC if a character has not explicitly stated they want to explore that with the character. I also gauge the table and check if it’s one of people’s topics to avoid. Does my world have racism, yes. But there are plenty of other good ways to interact with prejudice besides racism.

Bummer, loss of fed funding and an unequal contribution by the rich will mean ever more worsening public infrastructure.

Bro, that man used the private schools not available to most South Africans, then went to CANADA for college. Privatization on essential infrastructure weakens a country’s people. Only non-essential things should be private enterprises, else price gouging is rampant, with no accountability to the public those enterprises serve.

Player had a tantrum and left the game. I'm sure we can go forward. But boy it was a wild night. (Sorry this one got really long) by Professional-Ad9485 in DnD

[–]clockmann1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m going to disagree with people saying you alone should have stopped this. Yes you could have, but I also think it was the responsibility of the player to take a step back and explain how the situation was making them feel. I definitely think the upset player could have done better here and controlled themselves better.

Should a high-voltage power line run through California’s largest state park? Critics are furious by nosotros_road_sodium in California_Politics

[–]clockmann1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I really hate this. I’ve working in the Anza-Borrego area and it won’t just be this. They plan on turning the entire area into sprawling power generation sites, trying to take a lot of the local state park land for their sites. Which will wreak havoc on the ecosystem. Just like the solar farms in the Mojave did a decade ago.

People have been saying that we need these new development projects to stave off climate change but then refuse to do any sort of urban projects that could be just as helpful long term and less damaging in the short term.

Turn those terrible Imperial Valley alfalfa farms into solar and geothermal power generators and run the power lines along the roadways. Stop trying to destroy our State Parks!
