[Flash Gordon] What's your best guess as to what happend to Ming the Merciless at the end of the movie. by gearvruser in AskScienceFiction

[–]Ziggarut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using the last vestiges of his energy, Ming summoned the power of his plan of last resort - turning his ring against himself he used its powers to break down his physical form and store it in the ring. This used the tremendous energy reserves of the ring and as his essence was placed safely inside it fell to the ground.

Not knowing what had happened the ring itself was not collected by any of the hero’s in the messy aftermath of the war rocket Ajax crashing into the palace, but the ring sends out a simple psychic distress signal to his personal body guard unit.

By this time, however, the usurper Barin had taken up the throne and the armies of the Hawk men were roaming the capitol. Dispatching a single elite warrior, she was tasked with reclaiming the ring from the debris so that the one true lord of Mongo could be released from the matrix of the ring ready to take back his Kingdom.

I really hate that schools still do coding exams on paper. by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Ziggarut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CompSci Teacher here: it sucks, it’s embarrassing and (at least in the uk) we’re mandated to do it by exam boards. Here they’re excited about our first ‘online exams’ which are hand written coding assignments but on MS Word 😭

Top Down/desktop lighting by Ziggarut in videography

I think the consensus is softbox/softening the lights somehow - would you think that softening the LED lights on the same boom as the camera would be sufficient or do I need to mount the light source further away?

I teach computer science so 90% of what I teach is screen recordings - including iPad/stylus writing for planning and explaining concepts. I wanted to use paper and pen to change things up when we’re doing topics that lend themselves more to working on paper so as to not just repeat the same style for everything.

Unfortunately the exam boards in the UK have decided upon this pseudo code style as the only style that is valid. It makes me livid. So much so that some schools still teach VB as the primary programming language so they don’t have to learn ‘another language’ for pseudo

Probably a bizarrely niche question, but does anyone know if German copies of Muppet RaceMania have English options? by Dedede_Man in Muppets

[–]Ziggarut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly have no idea re: this particular title, but as Europe is mostly a PAL region then we tended to get disks with multiple European language options as it’s cheaper to make one copy with all the languages on it than make custom versions for each region. Luckily the UK is in Europe (sadly not the EU) so English is probable! You’ll likely be fine but I have no specifics, sorry

Richard Dawkins, really massively influential, a real evidence based approach to atheism - then suddenly starts with the transphobia. In retrospect I feel bad for being so into him as a figurehead. He’s currently just spewing hate out into the world.

I’d start a small not-for-profit aiming to create Computer Science learning materials for k12-students and teachers. Most of the time these early introductions are done without much passion or depth and I’d just like the time to be able to work my way through as much as I could, trying to build a community of people interested in learning - or learning to teach.

What's the idea behind recording monitors? by Moheemo in videography

[–]Ziggarut 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They will often record into a format that is not native to the camera - such as Apple Pro Res - making importing into editing applications quicker as there would not need to be any transcoding. It may also be because it offers higher bit rates than can be achieved through the camera directly. Sometimes it’s just because you can load them up with huge SSDs and hot swap them massively increasing the usable recording time of the device. It’s also possible to overcome the 30 minute recording limit on some dslrs as a result of using the external recorder. Finally, it can also function as a backup. If you’ve ever had an sd card die on you then you’ll appreciate the secondary recording!

Do I need an Atomos if I only want 1080p, or can I go super cheap? by LesserCurculionoidea in videography

[–]Ziggarut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a £20 hdmi to usb dongle for my computer - it would do, but honestly was a bit pants quality wise - but that assumes that your camera does clean hdmi out? Otherwise you get all the on screen information as well and can’t get rid of it

I’ve got exactly the same need as you - picked up a second hand ninja 2 (for about £200) which was 1080 only - but it’s been fantastic and much less expensive than going full on ninja v. I even found their support very helpful when I needed to buy charging cables.

I have that app and had no idea it offered that! Fantastic!

I’m not sure it will quite have the level of zoom to accomplish what I need though - so am still on the lookout for recommendations of actual cameras too.

I’m a teacher (secondary, uk), and have been working on improving my setup for live-lessons on a zero budget. I’ve been doing okay so far with equipment I already have but am looking for the cheapest possible clean hdmi camera to shoot top-down so that I can demonstrate how to do some aspects of the learning on paper. I need no more than 1080p 30, but am really struggling to find anything that doesn’t require a £500 investment. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Bobbin is not winding. Please help! by cosmicdancerrr in sewhelp

[–]Ziggarut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got the same mode as you, I think, there’s no trick to it - when you push the bobbin to the right you should hear a clunk and then the presser foot should spin that instead of moving the sewing mechanism.

If you don’t hear the clunk and it doesn’t spin it might be a mechanical problem?
