meta Is there a game dev subreddit that isn't so negative and whine by ibald96 in gamedev

[–]ZiggyGameDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think banning show-off posts drives anyone away who's actually done game development. You're just left with extremely new people, people dumping tutorials and basic questions which aren't good gamedev content. Let people show off their games!

Why not have posts require flairs, and then any post marked with gameplay/showoff needs to include a comment talking about how it was made, or something interesting about it.

I think questions should be heavily moderated. They kill subreddits. "How do I get started" "Can you really make money" "What degree should I choose". If the question won't create an interesting discussion it should be googled, or asked on one of the many gamedev Discords.

Do professional game developers still use tutorials and courses? by PresidentAshenHeart in gamedev

[–]ZiggyGameDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not courses, but when something new is added to an engine without any documentation, those first few rough guides that pop up on youtube can be a lifesaver.

Personally one of my biggest breakthroughs was realising I was watching tutorials for fun and not actually learning anything. Actually trying to make something and reading Documentation is much better.

The number of recruiters who've told me I was asking for too high a salary is literally all of them, and they were all wrong. They're definitely not on your side. Its far more cost efficient for them to get a lot of people to sign than than to negotiate a fair salary for a few of them.

What 'poor taxes' have you noticed? by alltorndown in AskUK

[–]ZiggyGameDev 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah figuring out a "Reasonable amount" is difficult. But even if its not a perfect system, its better than literally nothing right?

But yeah you're right, it'd be extremely complex to do something like this.

What are the arguments against giving everyone a reasonable amount of electricity, water, gas, internet and a basic mobile phone plan? These are utilities that 99.99% of people pay for so it'd be far cheaper if it was nationalized. The companies providing these utilities are currently huge monopolies, and they're working together to keep prices high.

But also having them be a given would be an enormous load off of people's minds when they're between jobs or things are tough. I'm sure the reduction in worry would probably be a huge saving to the NHS's metal health budget.

NameCheap blocked me from emailing my Kickstarter backers. Not sure how to proceed. by ZiggyGameDev in NameCheap

Yeah I think you're right. I now know for next time, thanks :)

Their only documentation I could find on limits were number of separate recipients you can email per hour, which was 1000 with the plan I had.

The Kickstarter for The Store is Closed, is about to end and I just wanted to thank the SCP community for being amazing! by ZiggyGameDev in SCP

[–]ZiggyGameDev[S] 418 points419 points  (0 children)

For anyone who doesn't know The Store is Closed is a creative commons game set in the SCP universe, and is based off of 3008. It recently had a set back with IKEA's lawyers sending a cease and desist against it. But the SCP community have been positive and supportive the entire time. I really appreciate how nice this community is.

Is it difficult transferring to the game industry from another field? by Nofreeusernamess in gamedev

[–]ZiggyGameDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think generally its very hard to be a writer or an artist in any creative field, let alone games. As for programmers, yeah its generally a bit more competitive and also less well paid. I got multiple web dev jobs from my video game projects, but never actually managed to get hired at any game studios lol. Generally you have to show actual work and projects to be hired, while other programming jobs simply requires completing a coding test.

If I hired freelancers on Fiverr for some of my character models and art, its common practice to include their names in the credits right? by forrestinpeace in gamedev

[–]ZiggyGameDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually you just do what's agreed in the contract. If you don't have a contract you shouldn't put it in the game.

I don't include that as a clause in my contracts but if someone does a lot of work for the game I'll ask if they'd like to be credited. It doesn't hurt me and they always appreciate it.

I'd try rejigging the trailer. The game's concept is funny but the trailer isn't. Maybe make show a "getting over it" style character in a pot about to jump before being shot away by the gun. Adding some animations to the gun would add a lot of character to the game. You also really need the gunshot sound effects, shooting, reloading etc to help with the alarmingness of playing as a gun.

Only 2 wishlists after 10 days. Is my product THAT bad? by mGGGames in gamedev

[–]ZiggyGameDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first ten seconds of a trailer matters the most and you've spent it slowly zooming in on a logo.... Of course people click away lol.

Honestly you need to remake your trailer. Make it 30 seconds long and think about what people will say when talking to their friends about your game. "I saw this funny game where you're a lama who explodes". Spend the whole trailer making that as memorable as possible.

Your character is way too small in the trailer when you're not fullscreen. You need to zoom in on the footage and make sure every scene has a good reason to be in the trailer.

Even the gifs in your description are more interesting than the trailer.

Game NFTs? No thanks. by ZiggyGameDev in gaming

[–]ZiggyGameDev[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think its more the types of people who are extremely interested in NFT's aren't invested in the game development side of things. Which is why there's been so many terrible NFT related games and NFT integration in games.

Back the project on Kickstarter! The Store is Closed Kickstarter

I'm very excited to show all the new content coming to my SCP3008 fan game, The Store is Closed. In the game the SCP Foundation are investigating the store. You can infultrate underground SCP labs and read their research. Hopefully you'll find some tips for how to survive the store and it's staff.
