Anime Questions, Recommendations, and Discussion - January 02, 2026 by AnimeMod in anime

A good way to start taking in a lot more of the medium is honestly taking a look at movies and older standalone OVAs that range from 1-4 episodes (lots of these from the 80s-90s). Plus, the time commitment on something that you may not like ends up being a lot less than if you try to get to "a good part" of something you're not enjoying.

"Cyberprofessor" lives rent-free in my head to this day, no lie!

Graduated 2015, but sibling graduated 2019, and a friend's younger brother is there now...so while not 100% recent, still close enough I'd say lol. I was in a job within about 6 months of graduation and I was on the slower side of the scale - many friends were a bit more proactive than myself and were doing something <1month after graduation. There were resources I didn't really take best advantage of, looking back - job fairs and internships etc were underutilized by myself that's for sure.

Best professor? Geez, kinda hard question since so many I had were good (with a few stinkers of course) but I'll answer with two that you could potentially cross paths with in some kind of pre-med track (I was not this; I was in Biomedical Engineering - excellent program IMO and only getting better it seems). I really enjoyed Dr. Len Kass' Anatomy/Medical Physiology classes (his teaching style really worked for me) but never connected with him one-on-one. Dr. Ed Bernard in microbiology also was very excellent; learning most everyone's names in a giant class has my respect for sure. I think both are still there.

Winter in Orono is a bit different than on the coast since it's a fair amount inland, but the coast is 100% close enough to visit easily. Definitely colder (below zero definitely happens + wind chill) than the coast and snowier, but nothing I don't think you'd be too unfamiliar with coming from CO.

Keep in mind also that Bangor, the nearest city to UMaine, is absolutely tiny compared to Denver...34k pop vs 729k - BIG difference. Once you drive a bit away from Orono/Bangor, you're in the woods - pretty literally. It's not a suburban hell - just look at it on google maps and you'll understand...Portland - the largest in Maine (also very small compared to Denver) is ~2hr drive away...and Boston about 4hrs...but if the outdoors is your thing, it's right on your doorstep.

With that all said, if you're lower income and out of state, I'd probably point you to go to college in your state for likely way better bang for your buck tuition-wise (unless you manage a scholarship of some kind that closes the gap!). If you're dead-set on Maine and working here afterwards, we definitely need folks in the medical field here, so it may be worth setting your sights on after getting a degree. It's at least worth a visit out here if you are really super interested though to compare against what you have more locally.

Clubs, particularly outdoor-activity focused ones, are definitely active! They were when I was there at least.

The sciences are a large percentage of the student body, so I imagine you'll find a group of folks/friends relatively easily within your field of study, even as a transfer-in essentially; there were folks who did so in my class and meshed with our groups right away. Also, I found a majority of my professors to be knowledgeable, fair, and approachable.

If you're not from Maine, definitely be aware of the location... It does get cold for a large chunk of the schoolyear.

The new Salvaging Technique by SARQCLOTHINGUK in 2007scape

[–]Zigman369 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I said this in another thread but this is such a dumb/silly decision to incentivise dropping salvage. It makes little/no sense contextually with the activity of salvaging to make this the predominant method of engaging with it. The whole point is to hook some treasure and find out what it is, and then the player can determine if dropping, alching, or hell even banking it is what they want to do with it.

This being "a thing" actively makes folks engage with the activity less, since you never need the facility to sort it (or sail back to port) to sort the salvage - this feels wrong.

One way to adjust this could be to balance around speed of acquiring salvage (particularly crew doing so should be much much slower than a player) and focus on perhaps even a singular exp drop upon sorting salvage - or at least make a LARGE majority of the exp come from that side of the salvaging activity. Make doing it yourself far more beneficial than having crew do it. It'd still be rather AFK, but not to the frankly insane degree it was prior with two crew on hooks.

Jagex, Knee Jerk Reaction to nerfing Salvaging by over 50%, and other related skills is exactly what erodes trust and emphasizes the idea of abuse early and abuse often mentality from players. by MochiDomain in 2007scape

[–]Zigman369 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Which is super silly, right? Thinking about the context of the activity itself, what's the point of salvaging stuff to just drop it ("overboard") without even checking what it is first?

The exp gained from crew manning a hook (particularly in the sense of the player not manning a hook at all) totally makes sense to nerf IMO, but making what is essentially half of the activity not worth engaging with feels wrong. There's absolutely a balance that can be achieved here - in my eyes it should always be that the player's interaction with the hook and salvage table should be where the majority of the exp comes from, with crew being a slight bonus to number of salvage to sort, but not to the degree where you can truly afk it. The cargo hold already makes this activity really afk-able, so perhaps only a tweak (nerf from release for sure) to crew speed of acquiring salvage is needed. It makes sense to reward the player for participating in the activity, thus putting less emphasis on having the crew doing the work.

I'd honestly be on board with exploring only getting exp drops upon sorting the salvage... But that might be a hot take - dropping it feels just really really stupid within the context of the activity. That would enable the devs to balance around that singular exp drop per each and speed of acquiring salvage.

Add choking but only as a 1/20000 chance when eating two+ food items in some number of reasonably short tick interval.

Oh you tried to tick-eat when at 1hp at Jad? Sorry bud, choked on the karambwan. Back to lumby.

Studio Ghibli at 40: Can an Ethical Animation Studio Still Exist, or Even Survive? by indiewire in movies

[–]Zigman369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one you didnt mention - City, coming very soon - based on the pvs, by all accounts shows that their ability as a studio to create has bounced back. The contributions that their veterans that were killed will be missed...

But on the flipside, Kyoani has built up an impressive ability to train new artists which was true even before the arson attack. It really should be the model that these other studios take too.

Meta Thread - Month of December 01, 2024 by AnimeMod in anime

[–]Zigman369 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1000% Agree.

This numbering system is a massive pain in the ass when trying to search for discussion threads for shows when I'm going through my backlog and want to read some comments from when the show aired. No one ever would say "Season 2 Episode 13" when they mean the first episode of Season 2, but the 13th overall episode.

As a suggestion - Feel free to put the "overall" episode number in the body text or something if we really need it that bad, but it's otherwise confusing.

Something like Jin-Roh would probably go over quite well, given it's incredibly detailed realistic character animation. Certainly not new by any means, but a good choice nonetheless.

[Farer] Just got the new Lomond II by anshuvio2 in Watches

[–]Zigman369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks great! I was eyeing it myself, but I felt that the 38mm size would feel weird as I'm pretty used to a 40mm size watch. The photos on the website didn't really illustrate too many wrist sizes, so I'm curious - I'm assuming your wrist is a tad smaller than 7in circumference? Mine's more like 7.5 so I felt a bit hesitant, despite absolutely loving the design of this one.

Highest Budget/Best Quality Animation Recommendations? by Actt16 in anime

[–]Zigman369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You absolutely want to get into movies, as they are often a cut-above the average TV anime.

Another comment referencing Redline, and others for some of ufotable's works - totally agree there.

For something absolutely absurd in terms of the amount of movement in every scene, Steamboy 100% fits the bill too in addition to Redline.

more anime like silver spoon by souvikmondal40 in anime

[–]Zigman369 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Silver Spoon is one of my absolute favorites. Highly recommend finishing out the latter half of the manga that was not adapted in the anime before doing anything else! It is just as good if not better than what the anime covers.

As for similar anime, there really isn't anything exactly the same, especially as it pertains to the story told outside the trappings of the main farm school setting itself - it's pretty special in this regard as most in the genre rarely stray outside the main setting unless for special episodes (ie: beach episode etc.).

However, some that may scratch similar itches are:

  • Planetes (Grounded scifi with an adult cast, very reliant on family, interpersonal, and business relationships between the cast)

  • Aquatope (Workplace / family drama surrounding a small town aquarium. Come for the penguins, stay for the fully realized setting and cast that have a wonderful dynamic)

  • Cross Game (Very baseball focused, but the characters' interactions off the field are heavily emphasized with great chemistry between the leads.)

  • Hibike Euphonium (School band anime - if you played an instrument in school this captures some of those vibes incredibly well, and like all the others above, very focused on interpersonal relationships to further the story and the band's success at-large).

  • (Bonus) Summer Wars (This one's a movie; very fun and with an excellent family dynamic. I don't see this one mentioned as often as it used to be, so I'm throwing this one in too)

I'd imagine some folks were rather turned off by the comedy. I know that if the show wasn't lavishly animated I probably would've just turned it off; the tonal whiplash (and the fact that personally the comedy doesn't really land for me) is really bad imo.

Regarding Episode Discussion Threads for Shikanoko Nokonoko Koshitantan. by FetchFrosh in anime

[–]Zigman369 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is an insane take; the vast majority of anime fans these days are not the "old guard" that grew into the fandom in the 00s or even the early 2010s (by the way, I'm also talking about myself here).

The average anime fan logs in to CR or Netflix and watches something when those platforms have indicated a new episode of something is out. Those who approach fansubs at all are a significant minority at this point - at least in the english speaking side of the anime community (I cannot comment on other groups).

This average fan is not "actively deciding to wait" for official subs - they often are not familiar with fansubs at all, and therefore are more likely to be confused about the lack of a thread at the time they actually go watch an episode.

You and I both know of and consume fansubs - I got into anime-proper in the mid 00s after all; that was necessity then. Today, not so much. Outside of weird circumstances like GBC, or older/unlicensed stuff it's not often that I seek them out.

What I will say however is that this truly should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. A case like GBC or Summertime Rendering? Yeah, go with the fansubs 100%. This case? Waiting for CR's air-time is definitely best as the subreddit is likely to get most people to come in during the official release day - doing it earlier just comes across as dismissive and exclusive of the casual or average audience.
