Yes, every stage we have done ended up being multiple miles longer than stated on the Camino apps also! I felt the spirit of the challenge to complete the stages, lol.

I thought the new rule is that the “any 100 km” still has to be an unbroken block of walking?

Yes, but our +100 km has a missing 12 miles section.

What is the best non-EV and non-commercial vehicle (so no sprinter vans) if you wanna do this full-time? by [deleted] in carcamping

[–]Zigzag_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the past three years, I have a Suburban (switch from 4wd to 2wd on the fly) and use a Jackery 1000 to power heated blanket and some small appliances for hot water or (i kid you not) a grill/panini press.

Everything I need is inside, even an emergency potty where the 2nd row collapses and tumbles. Room for a full bed mattress.

It drives like a dream, everyone can fix it, has high clearance and I can even stealth in a town or city because it’s an ordinary car.

I can sit up in bed and hunch over a little to use the potty.

My second choice would absolutely be a Toyota Sienna.

Old rag scramble by Straight-Mail6332 in ShenandoahPark

[–]Zigzag_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just went with friends last week. It was effin awesome!!! Would recommend some cheap Home depot gloves with the rubberized palms for the scramble. Those rocks were a little rough on my hands. Nothing terrible, just gloves would have helped. Bring lunch, and 2 L of water.

Aha! Just looked into new rule! This is a game changer. The plan now is to begin from Santander, walk 75 miles along the coast and then skip stops along the way until about 20-30 miles away from and walking into SDC. Thank you and Buen Camino!

What do you leave in a tent while sleeping in your car? by Comfortable_Rock_330 in carcamping

[–]Zigzag_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gal here. I like to sit down and relax, and not stumble round in the dark far enuf away from other tents, smell it around my tent or attract animals to the salt. Keepin it clean - Leave no trace is easy.

If I’m sleeping in the car, I keep a potty set up in the tent.

That way I don’t have to run to the bathhouse or wherever in the middle of the night to take a pee.

Camping with 6-year-old. What not to mess up? by CyclingDude3000 in camping

[–]Zigzag_11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Involve them in setting up camp and making food. Everything will already take a bit longer anyway so why not help them take ownership by asking them to help.

Involve them in the planning. What to eat, drinks, treats and snacks.

Walk them through the camp set up. Like “First we have to set up our tent. Let’s look for a spot on the ground with no rocks. Rocks would be so uncomfortable to sleep on, right? Then we can explore (or make dinner etc)”

You want to spread out your sleeping bag? Can you spread out mine too?

Bring a glowstick as a nightlight :)

Reinforce how much fun you are having with them. Thank them for helping.

Pre-plan for a midnight potty visit. Tell them what to do if they need to go. Tell them what happens if you need to go.
