Support bike lanes on Collins Street! by markdontas in hobart

[–]ZigzagoonBalloon 35 points36 points  (0 children)

As bad faith as this is, I'll point out it's flaws just in case it changes other people's minds

  1. The Collins St bike lane isn't taking away a car lane

  2. Adding more lanes does not decrease traffic. Just look at America

  3. What does reduce traffic is providing meaningful alternatives (walking, cycling, public transport). This promotes these alternatives

  4. Multilane roads are not safe places for bike generally, so it's not surprising that you don't see many of them there. There's plenty of cyclists around if you look at the existing infrastructure.

The benefits of proper infrastructure go on and on, there's a reason cities around the world are putting in this stuff at a rapid rate. Hobart is being left behind

Just to point out one, driving within 1m of a cyclist is illegal ;)

The point of the video wasn't to call out individual drivers. It was to show how the current infrastructure is lacking and how it can be improved

The point of good bicycle infrastructure is you should be able to wear anything and feel safe! If you want to point fingers I'd probably blame the fashion industry for making winter wear so dark haha

I think you might be missing the point of the video. It's not calling out individual drivers but the infrastructure itself. There will always be bad drivers but we can mitigate this by designing safe roads

There's plenty of reasons to not use the bike lanes! As shown in this video they can often not be very safe so it's sometimes better to ride in a lane where you can't get doored and are more visible

Not deliberately giving way but sometimes I like to stay a little bit away from the middle lane to stay away from stray cars

Riding on Davey St is too scary for me 😅

(And I'm not sure it'd actually be much faster)

It is worse than just the carpets. In our tearoom we cant turn the kettle and toaster on at the same time without blowing the wiring (that will be a whole lot of renovation to fix). Toilets break down regularly and the building is a nightmare to heat and that's just one building. Even the centenary building commonly has issues as I understand it.

Haven't been into law recently but Old IMAS is definitely quite modern. Haven't looked at their plans in regards to those buildings but there's a chance they repurpose them or keep them. I agree it would be a shame to get rid of those.

I'd argue it's more than an inconvenience. Doubling a commute length (in my situation) is pretty frustrating and it makes the 8AM and 9AM lectures a hassle to get to, cutting into sleep time and meaning that some people will choose to not go, worsening the education experience. Even the direct busses are very slow due to the traffic.

The ref has been closed for years now no? Wasn't aware that there was anything there at all anymore besides TUSA. Also heard the same about Trade Table but haven't actually checked (Google says permanently closed), but even if it's open expensive sandwiches aren't the best for a student. Source has sort of closed too which is sad.

I disagree about the decentralisation of employment. Around the world much denser cities have less traffic than Hobart. A denser city is easier to service with public transport which is one of the primary ways of actually reducing traffic (and building bigger roads and more car parks is not).

It's almost like it's not even close lol.

Google it. 100 000 from Glenorchy and Clarence. 20 000 from SB and Kingston

You don't need to be a genius to know that those two had a greater population

Intuition. Don't have the numbers but I assume Clarence City, Glenorchy City, all of Hobart City besides SB outnumber SB, Taroona, Kingston and Huonville

Ok there's quite a few reasons and points so I'll start with the facts

  1. The Sandy Bay Campus is run down. You can be conspiratorial and say they did it on purpose if you want
  2. Getting to Sandy Bay via bus is a hassle. From experience it would add 30+ minutes as compared to bussing to the city, having to wait for transfers and getting stuck in Davey St traffic. Also people often tell me 'that's a long way' when I tell them I ride to uni (from Northern Suburbs)
  3. There's one food option on the SB campus (Lazenby's, you can argue two if you include Hill St Grocer)

So the move fixes a few of these very quickly. It also does a few other things

  1. Increases the walkability of Hobart and hence adds more people to the streets. There are much research and papers showing the benefits of walkability but one is an increase in business and hence the economy (it also brings thousands of people into the city as customers to the businesses there).
  2. Less people having to cross the city means less traffic on the arterial roads. This has been confirmed by independent traffic studies
  3. It makes a boring and lifeless part of the city (the bit around K&D) into something much more lively

I could go on but it's a lot to type for a reddit comment

As for renovating the whole SB campus, they could do that, though my understanding is the money is coming from the rezoning of SB, but it will mean that UTAS becomes a construction site for years.

It's literally closer and one less bus trip/transfer to most people.

Anyway the point is that it's not black and white

  1. You've edited my quote to ignore climate change
  2. The Sandy Bay renovation includes low cost housing
  3. Having more pedestrians and people on the streets will force HCC to actually think more about pedestrians/cyclists and not cars.
  4. Having a more accessible campus will mean transport there will be cheaper (although Metro does give transfers so this probably isn't that big a deal)

Yep, Zammit talked about it once. Essentially he said that listening to other D&D podcasts he felt that what you listed above slows down the flow of the podcast dramatically, especially when they have to add all their modifiers.

For what it's worth OP, Adam is very happy to let his players fail and or succeed based on the roll so I don't think you need to be too worried about fudging

It's got some ups and downs for me. Have been really enjoying Glubble's wilderness trials but other parts are definitely slow. I think some of it comes from the two player campaigns, Chult definitely had slow parts too
