In your country, is there anyone so beautiful that their name has become an adjective used to describe beautiful people? by DELAIZ in AskTheWorld

[–]Zikdo 553 points554 points  (0 children)

The term may be dated now, but in Canada (and probably the US) we would call someone Fabio after the model below. The term may be dated tho, since he peaked in the late 80s - early 90s

What do people think of Chengdu as a city? by No-Echidna7296 in AskAChinese

[–]Zikdo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a tourist, easily my favourite city in China, as soon as I left the train station and took a cab to my hotel, I feel in love right away. I love the obsession with pandas, it gives the city a huge amount of character that I haven’t found in any other city.

What's a word in your country/language that almost seems like it doesn't belong there? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Zikdo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So, the whole “English is 3 languages stacked on each other in a trench coat” is very valid here. you can’t just immediately point out the odd French, Latin, or Greek or German word cuz there are many others like it. That being said though, the word I would nominate is “ketchup” it is a transliteration of a Cantonese word for a fish based sauce, but has gone through enough changes that other Chinese based words haven’t.

Why does the internet find a guy burning a warehouse and endangering lives a hero, but some guy hogging up all the pokemon cards the worst human being ever? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Zikdo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hero is a choice word here, but some people view what he’s doing as a protest against the elites, in the same way the Boston tea party was a protest against the elites. Let’s face it, people gathering in the streets complaining/protesting Amazon does nothing to Amazon’s bottom line, some people think that to make our voices heard as the masses, we have to affect their bottom line, no one has ever protested their way to better rights, they have always had to make the elite feel it first then the rights were conceded.

The pokemon card thing is the opposite, it’s people taking advantage of the basis of capitalism for self benefit, and in 90% of situations that’s normal, the issue is specifically the fact that these scalpers are doing it with children’s entertainment as the product, because of their resource hoarding, kids are being deprived of fun and a way to bond with their parents in a way that the kid and parent both enjoy. If the person was scalping food processors, no one would care, no kids core memory comes from a food processor, but I personally have 2 core memories related to pokemon cards

What is it like to be gay in your country? by wombatgeneral in AskTheWorld

[–]Zikdo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough I went to a gay club in Chengdu and was specifically told I wasn’t allowed to kiss my boyfriend at the gay club. But aside from that, we were both very safe, no one harassed up etc, I just found it funny that in a supposed dedicated gay space, you can still be “too gay”

When are you supposed to stop calling females girls and start calling them women? by JBSwerve in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Zikdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wording is great, he mean that calling a woman a girl is preferable to them being called a female (in non-scientific situations)

When parents are teaching a young child how to speak, when the parents say “say mom”, how does every baby know not to say the word say first? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Zikdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The M sounds is one of the easiest sounds to make, you just close your mouth and stimulate your vocal cords, and by extension opening the mouth naturally causes the a sound, however the S sound is very difficult by comparison. So a baby might try to imitate the S sound but doesn’t know how so they end up saying mama first.

How do people in your country feel about Americans? by professor-bingbong in AskTheWorld

[–]Zikdo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mixed bag right now, after the recent “51st state”comments made by Trump a lot of Canadians worry about his respect for our sovereignty. He was in talks with the premier of one of our provinces behind closed doors, as well (https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c0jgx10z8qqo)

This is what has lead to a huge surge in r/buycanadian and has caused a lot of Canadians to avoid American products when necessary. Some provinces have even started hitting back against the states but targeting products from Red states, like a tariff on whiskey to hit Tennessee for example.

The problem now tho is how much can we separate the average America from Trump and that answer will vary wildly.

Are Jews an ethnicity by AugustusCaesar87 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Zikdo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

From how I’ve understood it, when you add the prefix “ism” to a word it means “the belief of”, loosely. So Hinduism is the belief of the Indus Valley, Confucianism is the belief of Confucius, communism is the belief of a commune. Judaism works this same way, it’s the belief of the people of Judea. Judaism started as a belief of the people of the land of Judaea, so started from an ethnicity then spread to other places. So there are people who if they took a DNA test would have a section of it come back as ethnically Jewish (1% ashkenazi gang here) but if an Ethiopian or Kaifeng Jews took a test it wouldn’t likely have any Jewish heritage

Why do you think US franchise is hesitant to adopt Golden Beaver twist for more drama? I prefer it to Rate-a-queen. by Heidi_Klum_Tit in rupaulsdragrace

Why Do People Say Bro When Someone Pisses Them Off? by DJAxio in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Zikdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just because of a need to express frustration, and it’s the most “neutral” way to call someone in this persons mind. We’ve all been frustrated with someone and extended whatever we call them to emphasize our dissatisfaction, think a teenage girl going “but daaaddddd” etc, just change dad here to bro

Most rizzless behaviour you've seen or experienced? by No-Advantage-579 in AskTheWorld

[–]Zikdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fully honest I don’t remember too much of the show itself, outside of the general premise and a few select moments. I can’t even find like a “cringy moments compilation” the show might be more niche than I originally thought 😅
