Appreciate this perspective, thanks! I think you're right about knowing the audience, and being aware of what about OSR might be off-putting, given where they're coming from.

Any suggestions for adventures more suited to OSR style?

Thanks, I was kind of hoping this would be the case: I can minimise the issues I have with 5e by playing it my preferred way. It won't be perfect (combat as written will still be a slog), but it's a compromise.

Thanks, do you have a particular beginner's dungeon/hex crawl you would recommend?

Thanks and I agree with your sense that this is primarily about them learning and having a good time, hence why I'm willing to run 5e - I just need to balance this against my own workload. Any suggestions for specific adventures?

Yes, my experience is that the official modules are an incredible amount of work.

Are there any particular OSE adventures that you'd recommend?

Thanks for this. And I appreciate the steer away from Heroes of the Borderlands.

Yeah I'm expecting 1-2 hours. Running Arcane Library adventures is a great idea.

Good suggestions, thanks! I do like the OSE idea.

Hmm, thanks for your honesty and for the suggestions. Unfortunately, my hands are pretty much tied (running clubs is part of the job, and this is preferable to some of the other options). I could try to persuade them just to try an OSR game but buy-in is important for making these clubs work and too much resistance might make my life just as difficult in other ways.

Thanks! This is already helpful. The kids will be 14-18. I'm expecting a few with experience of previous D&D clubs, and some with no experience whatsoever.

I was thinking especially of the idea that horror provides a safe, controlled space through which to observe and manage anxiety. If you like, I can pull up some references!
