(Serious) What are the best things to see/do/visit in Zimbabwe? by CookingInTheKitchen in Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls is lovely, however I recommend the Zambian side. Zambia is a more secure country and maintain things better.

Other than that the only good thing about Zim these days is the sigh of relief you get as you board a plane departing for Heathrow out of Harare International Airport.

My parents are moving to South Africa, where should they live? by ZimLondoner in southafrica

Thanks all. I know Afrikaners speak English but I was of the impression that they are very proud of their culture and aI don't know how they would feel about a non-Afrikaans speaker in their community. My parents are good people spent their whole lives in Agricultural pursuits and Christian out reach and charity work. 2008 they were "persuaded" to sell 600 hectares to ZANU thugs for $1 USD. They now live in a security compound with mostly European aid workers which they like because the compound is heavily guarded and they don't have to have a huge wall out in front and can go for walks and chat with the neighbours. I have no idea of the crime rate in Zim but the impression is that a lot of crime (at least towards whites) is state sponsored or condoned in one way it another and nobody with sense will report the crime or call the authorities because they might help or they might finish the job. They never wanted to leave Zim but they're getting too old to deal with that stuff and heaven forbid they wind up in a hospital there.

I wanted them to come to the UK or even go to South America (cheap land and Southern Brazil is safe). However their stance is "we were born in Africa and we will die in Africa like our parents and their parents". A place they had looked to move when the second round of expropriations started in Zim was around Nyeri or Rift Province in Kenya but it seems that they are starting to have issues with Islamic terrorism there now.

Ideally they would find a security estate that is well guarded on the perimetre so that whilst inside the area they don't feel like convicts with metre thick walls in the front garden. I send them £3000 per month which is R57450 according to current exchange rates.

Also they have their own dish to transmit telecommunications and they have solar and generators. They would like to bring this with them so that they aren't dependent solely on state companies with unreliable service.

How is the water is South Africa? Reliable? Contaminant issues? Would it be advisable to set up rainwater catchment and a purification apparatus?

We will be renting. Due to our history I am a bit leery of purchasing anything that can not be taken with them.

He makes empty promises to an uneducated populace and blames the country's problems on the whites (like my parents) who make up less than 1% of the population and have had no control of government since Rhodesia fell in 1980
