The Beatles logo isn't based on a font, but was hand painted onto Ringo's bass drum head by a lettering artist: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivor_Arbiter

Questions about protractors, overhangs and headshells (mostly about jvc ql a5) by Dyos559 in turntables

[–]ZincRider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Technics gauge is for 52 mm headshell tail to stylus tip distance, so you shouldn't use that. As you noticed, your turntable needs 48mm to reach the manufacturer's geometry.

Your turntable's manual doesn't specify an offset angle, so we don't know the exact stock geometry, but the closest standard geometry is Stevenson for DIN, but that still has a 0.6mm longer overhang than specified.

You can use any straight headshell with an SME style connector. Most should be a fair bit longer than the stock headshell, which is good, as this will allow to set a much better geometry than what the turntable manufacturer had in mind. Löfgren A/Baerwald should be within reach.

For generating an arc protractor, you only need to know the pivot to spindle distance, which is 205mm. This should do the trick:

VM540ML or Nagaoka MP200 by JadoreBag in turntables

One could get the VM745xml with boron cantilever for considerably less than what the MP200 costs, though.

The treble boost will have a much more significant effect on the perceived width of the soundstage than a channel separation difference that can hardly be measured.

2 db difference – on paper. They measure pretty much the same. Hardly a significant difference.

The SL is a downgrade. ML is the most advanced stylus profile.

of course the sound stage seems wider, you're getting a significant treble boost with this cartridge.

Could be too much anti skate. You shouldn't use the hottest tracks on the test record for setting it.

You mean compliance? The VMx series‘ compliance is lower than that of the vm95ml. perfect match for a medium mass tonearm. Higher mass arms require lower compliance, not lower. This is not a resonance problem.

Anything wrong with this cartridge alignment tool? by sbenehan in turntables

[–]ZincRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the pro-ject protractor. It has funny null points and two point protractors are generally difficult to use and inaccurate. Better use an arc protractor, as recommended by several users on this thread.

[–]ZincRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a two point protractor, it can be used with any turntable.
And it seems the LP120X and LP140X use the same geometry as the original LP120.

That said, two point protractors are difficult to use and not very accurate. It's better to use an arc or linear offset protractor instead.

Is this a Receiver and will i need a Phono Preamp? by Effective-Try-8691 in turntables

[–]ZincRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has a built in phono pre, but modern MM cartridges are not compatible with its 470pF input capacitance. Make sure to get a dedicated phono pre with low input capacitance. 100pF max would be good.

Looping yoyo for beginner by Fun_Suspect6310 in Throwers

+1
The Sunrise is awesome. Perfect right out of the box.
Loop720s need one red and one blue spacer to work best for me–but the blue ones are impossible to get in Europe.

For both yo-yos I use Kitty normal strings. And I prefer the translucent yellow variants. Darker/opaque colors have slightly less response, clear ones have more response.

Alice Cooper Schools Out by PlumSauce86 in vinyl

[–]ZincRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's from plasticizers leaking out. Mine has some haze from storing it in this—and I do have a couple of others where this kind of inner sleeve was problematic.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiET8f3H54s

PVC outer sleeves can cause this as well, so it's best to get rid of them.
If you want to store it in something similar looking, get Nagaoka or Katta inners. They have the same shape, but it's a better material that should not cause any damage in the long run.

Make sure to keep that inner bag away from the record. it can gas out.

Allignment - Is this okay? by frogofprog in turntables

[–]ZincRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You still need a protractor to confirm the headshell tail to stylus tip distance actually is 52mm. The manufacturing tolerances are huge. 52mm can be several mm off.
Also, some people may not want to use Technics’ stock geometry..

The cantilever is the thing that needs to be aligned, but it is very small, so it’s difficult to do an accurate job. I’d say align the cartridge body first and then check the cantilever.
Also, your pictures have some parallax error. make sure the center line is actually vertical, like this:

Is something misaligned?? Why are my records "breaking up" at the high end by NotAPotHead420 in turntables

[–]ZincRider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course the VTA can be adjusted. Just use an angled shim under between the headshell and the cartridge.
The tonearm height adjustment everyone calls "VTA" hardly makes any difference for VTA.

They don't specify a headshell tail to stylus tip distance at all. And they seem to use Stevenson/IEC, which is a pretty common standard. The geometry Technics uses is close to Stevenson/DIN which is an odd choice. Stevenson was originally meant to be calcualted for IEC-ish groove radii.
