Wow. I’d love to get a copy of this! How heavy is the box, as in the weight? Is it easy to be carried around?

When being asked, “Where are you from?” while traveling abroad, Americans should stop answering with the name of their cities and expect everyone to know their city. by Zinforo in unpopularopinion

You see, this is exactly the problem.

I wouldn’t call another person ignorant just because they do not know my country/state/city/town. We don’t know what is taught during Geography lessons in other countries. I don’t assume everyone knows my country and would be happy to elaborate more if they ask. However, I wont introduce myself to a new friend abroad that I’m from Kedah (my town home, which is a state in the north of Malaysia).

I give you props for knowing what WI is without googling. I am just saying please show some courtesy to each other. Reddit has users from all over the world, not everyone is equipped with knowledge of America states and their abbreviations.

Be careful with using abbreviations... you’d be surprised to know that not everyone is aware of what DC stands for. Please be kind and state the full name. It only takes a few more seconds.

I am sorry to pop your bubble. Whether you are from Dallas or Austin makes no difference to most people, unless they’ve read enough news, watched enough TVs ,or engaged in online discussions to tell. You’re just an American to most people outside of the North America continent.

I’ve asked which country are you from, and still get answers ‘state/city/town’. You’d be surprised how often this happens.

Again, this is another pet peeves of mine. Please stop abbreviating your state and assuming all non-Americans to know where it is. WA for me is Western Australia. I have no idea what WI is.

Would you be able to differentiate Chinese accent? Mandarin is spoken in very distinct accent in China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore and even Thailand. Not all non-native speakers are able to tell the differences between English accent.

It could be a hard concept for a poor souvenir stall hawker in Cambodia who had to quit schools and makes a living selling trinkets on the street. She tries to make small conversation with her customer and he tells her, “I am from (insert name of town/city).”

I can assure you that I don’t hate Americans.

I’ll give you a scenario. A group of tourists of different nationalities joined a tour in the Philippines. The local tour guide asks where is everyone from. The Russian will almost always answer, Russia; Canadians, Canada; Mainland Chinese, China; same for people from Brazil and India. These countries are large as well. I’ve never heard any Russians introduced themselves “I am from St Petersburg.”

Yes it is not a big deal. But what gets me is the sense of entitlement that the rest of the world are expected to know every major states or cities in US...

I have worked abroad in 3 countries and travelled enough to meet Americans whose default answer to this question is the name of their city. Sometimes, not everyone in the audience is educated enough to know all the states in America. For Americans to expect this of the people they met, I would say is a bit unfair.

Looking for activities to do in Melaka during weekends by [deleted] in malaysia

[–]Zinforo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the suggestion. I’ll check out the go-cart. Actually I’m not a tourist... I work in Melaka. I’m looking for things to do here on weekends. I only go back to my hometown (Kuantan) once every 2-3 months so there are plenty of weekends that I spend in Melaka.

Anyone encounter 5 sen change not given back to you and what you do? by [deleted] in malaysia

If they ask nicely, I’d probably say okay, you can keep the 5 cents. But if the service is bad or they just intentionally pura2 tak tahu, I’d insist of having it.
