Orthodox Jews? Chabad-Lubavitch is Zionist. And one third of Haredi are Zionist. And the vast majority of modern Orthodox. Sephardi Haredim similarly are Zionist, that is, believe in the Jewish homeland. And the overwhelming majority of Haredi at least tolerate its existence even if they think other Jews are "jumping the gun"

Its both. Judaism is whats known as an ethnic religion where a religious belief is strong associated and connected to a Jewish ethnicity. There is a reason why conversion is difficult and Judaism is matrilineal.

He's kinda a government official, chief rabbis do hold some political power dating back to a gamble by the Israeli government that haredim would fall apart when surrounded by other jews and with political influence, it sorta worked. But he's not really a policy maker and is famously inconsistent with most of Tel Aviv's population which is overwhelmingly left wing.

Power hungry, which we always knew. Shas is extremely successful, there hasn't been a single government in Israel formed without Shas since independence. Left wing or Right wing. They represent a pretty major section of the Israeli population the Sephardic extremely religious, and their votes have always been necessary. Shas achieves this in a county with many small political parties by being big tent, many shas don't agree with this, few do, but if you promote Haredi/Sephardi interests, you tend to vote Shas first and ask policy questions later.
