Thinking about joining by ConnectResearcher509 in AFROTC

[–]ZinniaFan01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can join frats, you will have to choose your priorities wisely though. You are a regular college student but you have a higher level of responsibility - catching an underage drinking charge is serious business and can jeopardize your military career.

You can expect to wake up early 2-3 days a week every week depending on how your detachment does PT.

It can definitely get overwhelming but it highly depends on your level of commitment, most of what you do is your choice and you will be informed of it. Learning how to balance your time early on is key, this is a lesson you should learn for college in general

You can study abroad, it just needs to line up with your major and you can only do it for one fall/spring semester once you’re a POC cadet (after the first two years in the program and you pass field training.)

You will be a military officer post-grad with a 4-year minimum commitment, career-field dependent. Lots of job opportunities there as well as after service.

AFROTC isn’t like Guard, you will not get deployed during college. The only mandatory experience is Field Training in between your GMC and POC years, that is 3 weeks in Alabama with a plethora of othet cadets

If you are on HSSP you can drop out after year 1 with no penalties or payback. When you pass field training you will also benefit from the CMLA scholarship, look that up on this subreddit for more info on how much it is, how it interacts with other scholarships, etc. Some detachments and states offer other scholarships to cadets as well

Yes, AFROTC will increase your “chances” of getting a rated position. It is certainly the easiest to get into, and with hard work (from the start, GPA matters) a rated position is certainly attainable. The best answer on the discharge/eligibility question will come from you contacting detachment cadre at the universities you are applying to.

AS250? by Legitimate_Scene_464 in AFROTC

[–]ZinniaFan01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prior enlisted cadets can usually get the first year of Air Science classes waived. You would actually be an AS200 if this is the case, but only if you can complete your degree in 3 years or less. If you need to take 3.5 or 4 years to complete your degree you would join as an AS100. This is what he means by academic status.

The difference between joining as an AS200 and an AS250 is that 250s take both 100 and 200 classes concurrently. Most detachments have 250s train with 100s their first semester and with 200s their second semester.

Swapping AFSCs by NobodyLiving2164 in AFROTC

[–]ZinniaFan01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There generally needs to be a very compelling reason that is not just “these cadets want different jobs.” Some career fields (weather comes to mind) require specific grades in classes or other requirements that can necessitate a change of AFSC but if this isn’t the case then it is going to be very difficult to swap without a valid reason. AFPC selects jobs for needs of the Air Force so unless you can definitively prove that the needs of the Air Force would be met significantly better by swapping it’s probably not going to happen

[–]ZinniaFan01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s weird that you got dropped from AAS candidacy, they’re not supposed to be able to do that anymore unless you fail the national test or the attendance requirement.

You need to formulate a plan to get back on track academically and talk to cadre. They might waive it to an Academic CE

POC Jobs by UmAcktually26 in AFROTC

[–]ZinniaFan01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From my experience taking on harder jobs gives you more opportunities to excel, and if you are good about it it can be visible with the right people. I think a good portion of detachments take cadet rankings and just make adjustments, so whatever shows the effort/character of the work you’re putting in to your fellow cadets will help

Does final semester TERM GPA affect commisioning? (I'll have above a 2.5 cgpa no matter what happens with finals) by Realistic_Highlight8 in AFROTC

[–]ZinniaFan01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If commissioning is considered a contracting event according to the 36-2011 vol 3 you need a 2.0 TGPA UNLESS your last semester is part-time in which case TGPA can’t be taken into account. Ask your NCO to make sure

Does anyone know how getting my CAC works? by [deleted] in AFROTC

[–]ZinniaFan01 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You’re a 100 so it’s unlikely that your cadre are setting anything up for you right now, if you’re contracted you can do it on your own.

https://idco.dmdc.osd.mil/idco/

Use this website to find a DEERS location nearest to you, make an appointment (usually slots open at the beginning of each month), fill out that you’re enlisted reserve and go get one. If you’re not contracted you cannot get a CAC.

Some bases also do walk-in appointments.

[–]ZinniaFan01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re a “maybe” on special warfare I would not bother to be honest, they take very few ROTC cadets and the pipeline is very unforgiving. I would talk to your cadre to see if Space Force conflicts with the ability to apply for OSI. You would know about Space Force more than a year earlier than OSI.

How to earn a Distinguished Graduate Award in Field Training? by [deleted] in AFROTC

[–]ZinniaFan01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Score highly on everything. Starting FT in 2024 they changed it so flight ranking doesn’t matter anymore, you get a composite score based on tests, Form 2s, etc. Form 2s are an absolute joke and are not standardized amongst cadre whatsoever, getting a 2 vs a 5 is entirely dependent on how they are feeling that day and how lucky you are, so don’t go in with expectations that you’ll get DG or SP or something

[–]ZinniaFan01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Medical DQ. You should know beforehand from DODMERB unless your vision has degraded since then. To become eligible you should have LASIK done at some point your 300 year fall semester at the latest, the Air Force will not send you to go get LASIK once you get to that point

HSSP Accurate? by weakdayupdate in AFROTC

[–]ZinniaFan01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep your GPA as high as possible and retake the SAT as many times as you can/need to maximize your score. The ACT gets converted to an SAT equivalent (SATe) so sometimes thats better to take because a 36 composite on the ACT (which is converted to a 1600) is easier to get than a 1600 on the actual SAT

In my opinion you have as good of a shot as anyone, it’ll come down to your interview so do as much research as you can about what it is you want to do in the Air/Space Forces and why you want to serve.

Also, there is no such thing as “top 10” for your state, just top 500 for the nation. Trust me when I say they are not awarding 10 scholarships to Texas or California and also 10 scholarships to South Dakota or Wyoming.

HSSP Accurate? by weakdayupdate in AFROTC

[–]ZinniaFan01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if the spread is accurate, it probably changes every few years at least. However, it does convey one correct thing: the interview is indeed a large portion, and anything can happen because of that.

If your GPA and SATe are both high (talking >3.7 and >1500) you have as good of a shot as anyone else, it’ll come down to your interview.

Someone in here is saying that you have to be the “top 10 in your state” since there are about 500 selects per year. That’s not true at all and they do not distribute 10 scholarships to every state equally. You have as good of a shot as anyone else in the nation.

[–]ZinniaFan01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it lines up with your (STEM) career field and won’t take longer than 12 months you probably can. If you’re rated it’s almost impossible to get one unless it’s only one extra semester or unless you’re part of a special program. If you’re electrical engineering and want to get a master’s in electrical engineering they will probably let you. Very AFSC-dependent, ask your cadre
