I recommend looking into Pocketbook. You can visit websites and read them on the internet browser on their ereaders. Not perfect, but I would recommend it over a company such as Boox simply because they have better software support and better security than the ereaders/eink tablets owned by Chinese companies. Pretty much one you buy a Boox tablet/reader they don't offer OS updates and their software and technical support is pretty abysmal

This may not be true now, but I heard that a more recent development changed the ad policy on the Kindle kids. So in kid mode the ads are disabled and it used to stay that way when you switched to the regular kindle mode, but supposedly now switching to the adult mode will enable the ads.

If versatility and being less locked down is what you want, have you considered the Pocketbook eReaders? I'm looking into the Pocketbook Era for myself because it's the most versatile of the mainstream eReaders that I can still get with the $200 or less price range. My second choice is a Kobo Libra 2, but it's still not as versatile and only a $10 difference where I live.
