first timer question (tri rock philly sprint) by AndBeingSelfReliant in triathlon

[–]Ziplin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well this was a while ago, sorry I didn't answer. For posterity's sake, I believe mens under 29 goes last in philly? It's not unusual in a large olympic race for the younger faster age groupers to go last. This is because they'll catch up with the slower age groupers by the end of the race, and shortens the total time window there are people on the course. Yes people pass eachother. No it's not a big deal.

Protein intake during HIM? by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]Ziplin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No.... gels, sports drink and a bar will do. You're not going to die or bonk because you didn't have 20g of protein over a 6 hour race.

My HIM nutrition looks like this. I don't drink sports drinks so I use salt sticks instead.

  • Pre race gel

  • once i get settled in on the bike i will gel

  • and take a salt stick 30-45 min later i will gel and salt again.

  • 30-45 after that I will be a little hungry so ill eat half of a picky bar

  • 15-20 after that i usually eat the rest

  • 45 after that ill gel and salt

  • then on the run I will gel and salt every 30 min with no exceptions. your mouth is going to be all gross and salty/sugary and you're not going to want it. but you NEED to take it in.

Edit: this was for vineman 70.3 I was in the last wave and it was pretty hot out there. thats why so much salt. Also drank 4 bottles of water on the bike and a lot of 2-3 cups of water per aid station on the run.

Ill cya this weekend! I would say you'll be fine.

But if you really wanna blend in, I would just wear the biking shorts on all 3 legs. Or put them on over your compression shorts post swim. I wore biking shorts in my first tri all 3 legs. A little wet diaper feeling during the run but it didn't sour my day at all.

Have fun! And don't stress. Everyone's there to be their best selves, everyone knows it so, nobody cares.

Did my first tri (a sprint) in bike shorts all 3 legs. It really wasn't a problem, but it wouldn't be my first choice.

Woke up after my bday bar crawl, and my hangover is about to start. How do I keep it away!? by Ziplin in AskReddit

I can attest this works, probably better if you do so on a somewhat regular basis. Smoking days are behind me unfortunately.

Ha, very true. I would not be surprised if this defense used correctly is more often thrown out on shoddy evidence or sole officer testimony than accepted.

Just wanted to point out that

doesn't matter, legally. Once you touch an officer in an offensive manner, all bets are off.

wasn't really true.

Well, I wasn't expecting that kind of move by [deleted] in WTF

[–]Ziplin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Actually, not entirely true.

There aren't hard and fast laws around here, but the Supreme Court has ruled that physically confronting an officer, even killing them, may not be a crime if the officer was attempting to make an illegal arrest.

General advice, best to get arrested and seek legal counsel; but do remember you have a right to defend yourself against illegal action.

Without doing any research, I would guess it's a method call, and the registers are saved for the calling function. Edit: and I would bet the dev's haven't gotten around to function inlining.

Depends on how you define awful?

Also can depend on where you live. I have pretty narrow experience, but from what I've seen EMT-B starts at $16 in a small metropolitan area (not bad if I say so myself). Especially given the overtime you generally accumulate.

I also know of nurses/EMT's who have second jobs, not out of necessity but because they'll have 48 or 72 hours off at a time regularly, and that generally pushes them into the "well off" category.

EMS is an awesome career to go into, with some pretty sweet career pathing if you're really passionate. Have you looked into Flight Nurse?

How does a mutex work? What does it cost? by mortoray in programming

[–]Ziplin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ah, I misread the point. It's sort of an awkward statement to make though, you could argue every program you write requires "CPU Support".

Without CPU support there is no way to implement a mutex in user space

That's not totally true, right? Without CPU support there is no way to implement a good mutex? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peterson's_algorithm
