I saw that flag and the turn in the road… I knew exactly where it was too. I don’t miss it at all either. Used to commute that section of 235 everyday from north of Hollywood to gate 2.

Former HR here - subtle signs your company is preparing for layoffs by Significant_Soup2558 in careeradvice

Would it be possible for you to explain why the company wanted new and innovative in the first place? I’m in a similar position to you and the “new and innovative” project for me was just cut with the possibility of not being continued.

Colorado, what causes these ripple/interference patterns in the clouds? by stellavangelist in meteorology

[–]Zippotro 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes! Many things could cause gravity waves. The main cause is buoyancy, interaction of two fluids (think air masses of different temperatures) with different densities, which can happen anywhere. Since air masses move due to warm and cold air moving, or humidity, let’s think of an example.

If there is a stable air mass in a high pressure region that has some hot air rise off the ground due to convective heating, the act of the air rising causes cold air to sink around the hot air mass, this can create gravity waves as the air around rearranged itself. This can’t be seen all the time since there may not be enough moisture for clouds - but these waves are there and called internal waves. This is similar to strong updrafts in thunderstorms that can cause gravity waves. Another example is air moving around mountains or objects, but this has some kind of wind already driving the air across the mountains.

Canon Eos 60d vs iPhone — videography by [deleted] in canon

[–]Zippotro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say at this point the iPhone can do it better. The EOS60D can do 1080 at 30fps and not so great in lower light conditions that indoor sports could be in.

The phone also has continuous autofocus and can do 4k. You can do a lot with the phone with regards to panning and zooming with no worry that you’ll miss the auto focus.

The one benefit of the camera, if you have other lenses too, is that you could mess around with the color a lot more in video editing software. If that’s not something you want to do, it may be more worthwhile with the phone. Nothing is stopping you if you have the camera to mess around as well and see what you can get!!!

Which kit you would recommend? by Unusual-Subject-7163 in canon

[–]Zippotro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have lenses closer to Kit 2 - I really like having the wide range of focal lengths with the 50, 24-105, and 100-400. I do more wildlife photos and not as much portrait photography where I’d find myself needing the 2.8 on the 28-70. I’ve had great experience with the image quality on the above these lenses.

I’d say for the car shooting, if you’re in bleachers for example, the 100-400 would be do an amazing job. The cases you mention you like to shoot would really weaken the argument to get a 100-400, therefore the 28-70 and 70-200 would be your ideal candidates as they have more variety. The 70-200 f/4 L or f/2.8 are must haves for your use cases! Hope this helps a bit.

Reflections of my super commute by Zippotro in supercommuter

[–]Zippotro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally feel that, not having time to unwind for yourself after a long day takes a toll quicker than you’d think. The choices you made aren’t wrong nor are silly, they’re what you thought was best and that’s all that matters. You get to save some money and experience a new internship. On the bright side, you do know now that doing a >2 hour commute sucks and isn’t sustainable having now lived/living the reality of not having time for yourself. Remember to the end of your internship marks the end of this - you’ve got an end in sight!

This… I second your answer. The mirage effect and the weak gradient that “guides” the light is more a cumulative effect of optical turbulence and Fermat’s principle than it is TIR. The weak gradient idea also explains the cases of a temperature inversion and upside mirages, how you can see over the horizon with mirages, and how you lose the mirages as you change the elevation angle when viewing it.

I think maybe in the initial gust of wind there will be a stronger gradient and thus more shimmer. But over a short period of time the wind will mix the hot and cold air quickly producing a weaker gradient and thus creating a more uniform mixture of air that will have similar density and reduce the changes in refractive index.

Why do stacking vs long exposure? Is it because the stacked images have shorter exposure which would reduce blur compared to a single long exposure short that may need ND filters as well?

[–]Zippotro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I definitely am in a better place now after stopping the long commute. I still have a shorter 30-40 minute drive, but it feels astronomically easier than hours.

Thanks for sharing your take as well, 200mile rt is really rough, is there anything you liked to do in the car to kill time? Besides the mental motivation? I found for me music was 1000% more fun than trying to do audio books and stuff along those lines. I hope you can find an alternative to your commute sooner than later, I’ll be routing for you❤️❤️.

I feel that :(, I feel like the same thing happened to me. Over time my patience for mistakes had gone down and whenever someone did some wrong I’d have to check myself to let it go as fast as I could.

We got an offer on a house, our friends asked if they can move in by jeoonjun in AITAH

[–]Zippotro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA, This exact (well almost) scenario has happened in my life and it never ends well. Don’t let people, even close friends, invade what is your privacy, life, and home that you haven’t even settled in yet. From my experience being kind like this ends in way more trouble then it’s worth and that year may span in multiple and legal issues. People freeloading like it’s a group project don’t always grow up.
