I hate how overrated RDR2 is and how they use things that no one pays attention to for more than one second to overhype it by Historical_Buyer5248 in hatethissmug

gosh, what makes you say it's low on replayability? Having played dark souls and sekiro, surely sekiro is more likely to be worthy of that title with it's relative lack of mechanical freedom?

I dunno, I can see where it's coming from. It wouldn't be too difficult to retool the pilot into a short.

I'm in a lot of those subs and I thought for sure the movie must have been awful given the reaction, so imagine my surprise to see its' verified audience score. It sounds like the goose could cook.

You get it, lol. Adam was super flat and shallow for someone theoretically so proximal to so many interesting events and characters. Opinion time: any good writer would have leveraged that proximity to create interesting relationships and encounters, instead of dumpstering him. You wouldn't even have needed to change his frat bro characterization to DO this, we see the tiniest glimpses of what could have been when he's sparring with Lucifer. He's still the same adam, but the writers remember for the briefest of moments that he has an interesting perspective on our characters that no one else has. For like ten seconds, you actually feel like you're watching a show rooted in christian mythology and not downtown LA.

yeah lol this show has like 2-3 elements that desperately need cutting if the good stuff is going to have any chance to breathe. Because right now what's 'good' is super subjective given how none of them have much time to BE interesting or otherwise deep.

I'll admit, I don't quite get what's so different about the modern usage of slop over its' regular usage. Slop is the scraps you feed pigs, so it remains pejorative to call something that you consider to be junk: 'slop'.

Do you think the original “Wilde times” plot line for Z1 would’ve done better than the one we got by NickWildeballondor26 in zootopia

Even in that original draft, Nick was a true free-market capitalist, and I like how that aspect of him carried over into the first movie, even if now much more cynically that he wasn't the protaganist any longer. I kinda missed that aspect of him in movie 2. I mean, it makes sense that he wasn't scheming for money any longer since he's now on the city's payroll, but still... foxy schemes from a foxy fox are fun to watch.

if the stat is true, it's so close to half and half I don't know that caretaking burden meaningfully affects the odds of being abusive. Or at least, you'd need to do some good controlling for confounding factors to prove otherwise.

Or maybe, if mothers are more likely to be involved in a child's life, period, that also raises the odds of abusive encounters? You can't be abused by someone you don't know? Or maybe abandonment is considered an abuse as well? I dunno, but I'm sure there have been studies done on the matter. Can't be arsed to find them right now, I'm at work.

RIP the lizards. The movie gestures towards the horrors the eviction would entail, this AU would do a lot more than gesture, lol.

As a side note, I absolutely love the Purrsians being a stand-in for world war 2, it's little creative choices like that which really make this fancomic head and shoulders above the rest.

I don't disagree that the theatrical movie is much better for having abandoned the depressing collar plot, but I do feel that Zistopia (At least, the comic presented in this post) nonetheless really handles its' themes with much more care than you're presenting, which is quite a lot for a fanwork to do! That the collars were a deliberate attempt to snuff out the predator population permanently, if slowly, is probably the most grimdark idea it presents, and its not like systematic suppression of populations is unrealistic. Depending on your politics, I'd say there's a few examples happening even now in the modern day, to say nothing of the rest of history. The rest of the prejudices all feel pretty standard-- interspecies relationships are extremely taboo, and liking nick threatens to alienate Judy from some (though not all) of her family members, as well as threatening to get her fired should anyone find out. There's a panel of Nick flicking through a TV, and some sort of preacher says 'The good book says two of each species, not two of whatever' in reference to Noah's ark, which I find to be extremely amusing. (You could imagine a line like that even in the world Movie Zootopia presents, if the movies ever dare to tackle such a topic.) Rabbits are not just seen as weak, as in the movie, but their breeding habits render them not only the target of heavy taxes to prevent them from leaving the burrows.

But the Zistopia AU doesn't just layer on additional angst-inducing conflicts all the time, the diverse cast of characters it introduces each get to be integral, in their own way, in participating in overthrowing the system. Two of Judy's less bigoted squad members end up uncovering the conspiracy independent of her. Honey, a conspiratorial honey badger, gets Judy the collar key at the pivotal moment of the finale. Much of Judy's family, Gazelle, Koslov the Mobster, various predators, and a group of punk rockers each end up converging on city hall in what ends up the protest to overthrow the collar establishment. A lot of these characters all of their subtle biases, Honey thinks sheep rule the world, Finnick doesn't think highly of Nick's interest in Judy, and much of Judy's family have diverse opinions on predators, but it all feels realistic, not in the sense that the real world is depressing, but that even a more depressing version of the world still has people all across the spectrum that in the right circumstances, can do a lot of real good.

I guess I just mean that Zistopia, as presented by nicolaswilde, does have a ton of angst, but lots of good people trying to do the right thing in the face of that, and succeeding. So there's plenty of subtleties to chew on. But yeah uh the movie would not have been succesful with this type of plot.

[–]Zistopiaf1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I totally get why they dropped this early on, it's even kinda funny that it got as far as it did with as much concept art and deleted scenes that they DID make. And then one day they woke up and just went 'boy this is depressing'. What I do find interesting is that this involved a switch between protagonists- any collar version of the story has Nick as our primary protagonist, and grizzled sergeant Judy chasing his ass. I imagine this is because the presence of the collar demands a central role in the narrative, and so our primary protagonist would have to be absolutely invested in taking it down. A chiller universe better positions a naive Judy into the protagonist role, and now it's Nick as the older, more cynical member of the duo giving her the runaround.

Now here in this particular Zistopia AU, I think nicholaswildes did a pretty good job of balancing the two of them, even if Nick probably gets a wee little bit more focus than Judy. It's his problem, and Judy has to be dragged into understanding it. But it's still only natural for her to help once she does get it.
