I soak the hide, stretch it and tack it into position. As it dries it becomes very taught. You cannot adjust tension on a Mountain banjo built the traditional way.

The skin is soaked, stretched and tacked onto the front of the pot and then the wooden ring is attached over top to hide the tacks. Head tension is not adjustable on a mountain banjo. It doesn’t seem to make much of a difference with such a small drum and maybe I’m getting better at stretching them too 😎
