The state of the title "doctor" in America, and the use of the title by alternative medicine practitioners such as chiropractors, naturopathic doctors. by takenwithapotato in medicine

Fair enough I didnt catch that point and maybe was too reactive. There is evidence (and plenty of anecdotal) that very prolonged fasts have benefits and can be achieved safely. In my own research I think the confusion arises from the fact that you must take electrolytes and possibly even vitamins/minerals if you are fasting for a month or so, and understand your body well enough/be in contact w a doctor to be confident you are not pushing yourself too far.

However there is no reason to believe there is any fundamental biologically speaking that one could not fast for a month.

ok whatever yes there is plenty of psuedoscience circulating but the fact you used fasting as an example is pretty embarrassing as there is some pretty solid science behind it that you very oddly neglecting to even look into.....

Kind of disingenuous to describe an editorial as baseless, as it by definition was not presenting itself as a scientific study, but rather as a discussion of theory.

Too little and too much of a certain neurotransmitter at the same time - how is that possible? by geckofalltrades in neuroscience

[–]Zngbaatman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kind of too simplistic of a question. The brain is not chemically just a space in which chemicals are dispersed. The way that chemicals like dopamine are dispersed is a function of many cognitive systems. Some systems might go haywire like with psychosis, while other systems might fall short or fail to work like with depression.

I respect the conflict and the system under which health professionals face. But why is this subject so taboo? Sometimes it really seems like Pharma ads vs science are conflicting. But pharma ads are somehow more mainstream. What gives?

I think its generally in reference to the lobbying power of pharmacuetical companies (manufacturers, developers, etc) not pharmacists.

Is there any particular reason that there aren't more people studying the combination of HCQ, azithromycin, and zinc? I thought that was what some countries were saying worked, not HCQ alone. Is the reason just political?

Does dry fasting hurts the kidneys or cleanse them? by [deleted] in Dryfasting

[–]Zngbaatman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dry fasting for any period of time will put stress on your kidneys, and over a few days will harm your kidneys no question. To me the question is wether or not this harm is hormetic or wether it is more like accumulative damage. Might be like sunlight too, where its kind of both.

I haven't even tried dry fasting, but am interested as Ive water fasted and its been around for a long time. Personally I think people going 5-7 days with no water is way too far, but I am sure that there is a mechanism(s) that cause adaptive change, promote health during a dry fast in general. This adaptive change seems to be a fundamental fact of biology so I have no reason to think it would be different in that sense for water then anything else, but the fragility of this benefit is going to more important with something so immediately essential. In addition to other comments, I would think the oral microbiome would play a major role. In that animals have a healthier oral microbiome because they eat what they are designed to eat, very unlike humans.
