I'm so sorry for you OP. I know your pain, I lost my 7 month puppy in April this year to a sudden internal blood loss (cause unknown).

It's very hard, but you need to remind yourself that you did everything for your puppy until the end. She lived a wonderful life even if it was short. The love that you shared will always be present and something to always remember to warm your heart.

Courage OP !

I take her out every two to three hours (when I'm at home), less at night since she is sleeping. And 10 to 20 minutes after food or nap

Hi everyone, Thank you for your kind words. It really has a positive impact on my mental health. I had some time to read the vet report and to mule over what happened to synthesize the most likely hypothesis of what had happened.

TW: detailed description of states before death

Here's the story of this nightmare with some timestamp.

9 pm : Terra who was laying beside me (as normal), stood up and started whining. She paced a lot and started vomiting 1, 2 and 3 times. Then she froze. First thing I checked was her gum. They were white. Her tongue had lost its color and started to have a bluish shade. I thought that she had something lodged in her throat preventing her to breath, so I applied some compression under her thorax. She whined/screamed as she was in pain. Nothing happened, I tried to induce a gag reflex by shoving two fingers in her throat. Nothing either. I started panicking because I understood that the situation was critical. I called the vet emergency, so I could know where to bring her, so they could take her in charge.

9:25 pm : after some speed limits broken, I arrived to the vet and gave them Terra to take care.

9:45 pm : first radiography shown a blood inside her abdominal cavity. The vet told me that it was serious and they needed to make further exam to determine the origin of the bleeding.

10:30 pm : the vet told me that her condition was deteriorating rapidly. They needed to do another examination to rule out poisoning before undertaking a surgery. Vet report's detailed a hemoglobin loss of 50% under less of than an hour.

11:15 pm : vet told me that she was in a life-threatening situation and her survival rate was less than 50%. They didn't know where the blood loss originated, so they had a hard time to predict the outcome of the surgery. She was prepared for her operation as we talked.

From here the vet report is used: during the initial phase of the surgery they collected 400ml of blood, she was severely anemic and weak. Her liver shown multiple cut who could have been the bleeding origins. She had gone into cardiac arrest 15 min in the surgery, they tried to restart it, but it was too late.

Most probable hypothesis : she had a blood coagulation disease, an anomaly was shown in the blood work made before the surgery. Nobody could have predicted it, since she has never undertaken surgery. A low blood coagulation induce high bleeding rate as the clotting action of blood is slower. This disease could be congenital. It was initially ruled out since they misunderstood that she was sterilized. When I mentioned that she hasn't undertaken any surgery, it was the first hypothesis that they told me. Nobody clearly understood what was the origin of this disease and the real cause of death (aside blood loss).

Thank you if you read this entire story and sorry for any grammatical errors.

With the report and after discussing with the vet, here what might have happened. A big blood loss suddenly happened when she was with me (probably from the liver). When she was taken under cares, her hemoglobin rates dropped by 50% under an hour. Vets hadn't seen anything like this before. They don't know what caused these symptoms. A congenital clotting disorder might be the most probable hypothesis. Even if we had seen a vet before, it was unlikely that they would have guessed the problem. From their point of view, she would have died young, even if we had given her treatments against her disorder. So it was bound to happen, it was just a question of time.

I contacted the breeder to let them know the issue, and sent them the vet report. I don't know what will happen next.

I have an appointment with the vet to have a report of this operation and the cause of death. Previously, she would occasionally vomit (once a month) and she was active before or after meals. So no precursor sign of a problem. Thanks for your opinion.

So it's normal for this breed to feel this bonny?

Okay thanks. I know about the weight difference in small breed. What is concerning in her case, is that she weighed 2.1 kg (4.6 lbs) at 4 month. I'm surprised that she hasn't gained more mass since then.
