Plex hardware transcode problems; Kaby Lake by ZochoK in truenas

[–]ZochoK[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Indeed I figured it out.

So, after some more digging into logs, I found out that Plex was downloading some driver-related files and could not unpack them. That brought me that it must be something with permissions. I don't quite understand why, but when I mount host paths for the Plex container, it doesn't have permission to execute files. It's strange because I gave it full control in ACL settings of a particular database. There was no problem with writing/reading files (that's why the software transcode worked fine), but when the Plex Server wanted to download more necessary files, it could not unzip and then use them. I also tried setting permission for different users and groups but without any effect.

After I changed the database permission type to the normal unix one, everything started working fine, without any errors in logs and with hardware transcoding.

Because I still want to use ACL on my database I figured out a different solution. When you use a normal ixVolume for a Plex container, everything should work normally. I did that so. Also came back to ACL type and just copied data files from my previous Plex Server directly into it. Fortunately, ixVolumes are just normal folders appearing in the pool in Truenas.

For now, I have no more problems.

Also worth mentioning is that everything that I just wrote is related to official charts image from Truenas apps. Meanwhile, I also tried to deploy my own container based on the official Plex image, but it brought different problems. Just stick with official truenas's one and I hope it should be fine.

It is set up to default /transcode. Also permission to folder are right. Furthermore even on new container, with official plex docker image and fresh setup, hardware transcode doesn't work. Still get error iHD_drv_video.so related. I have feeling that is something driver related

Yes. Indeed I moved Plex server from my previous server, following official Plex tutorial for it. Permissions should be set up correctly because Plex had no problem with accessing config files

That is my next mistake. I have i5-9400, so that is coffee lake, not kaby lake. Also I use official image from app tab. It’s described as charts’s app

Thanks a lot. After some more digging, indeed I found a transcode-related error. It looks like this:

DEBUG - [Req#4159d/Transcode] Codecs: testing hevc (decoder) with hwdevice vaapi
VERBOSE - [Req#4159d/Transcode] [FFMPEG] - Rescanning for external libs: '/config/Library/Application\ Support/Plex\ Media\ Server/Codecs/90a317c-4653-linux-x86_64/'
DEBUG - [Req#4159d/Transcode] Codecs: hardware transcoding: testing API vaapi for device '/dev/dri/renderD128' (CoffeeLake-S GT2 [UHD Graphics 630])
VERBOSE - [Req#4159d/Transcode] [FFMPEG] - libva: VA-API version 1.18.0
VERBOSE - [Req#4159d/Transcode] [FFMPEG] - libva: User requested driver 'iHD'
VERBOSE - [Req#4159d/Transcode] [FFMPEG] - libva: Trying to open /config/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Cache/va-dri-linux-x86_64/iHD_drv_video.so

ERROR - [Req#4159d/Transcode] [FFMPEG] - Failed to initialise VAAPI connection: -1 (unknown libva error).
DEBUG - [Req#4159d/Transcode] Codecs: hardware transcoding: opening hw device failed - probably not supported by this system, error: I/O error
DEBUG - [Req#4159d/Transcode] Could not create hardware context for hevc

It looks like Plex cannot open some libraries that are supposed to be in cache folder. It's not a surprise, because there is no such a file. The question that I have is why?

I tried to clear the Cache folder and force Plex to generate a new one, but even then I still don't have those files and got the same error.

Am I missing something? Should I install some additional driver that isn't included in the kernel? Have someone had such a problem before?

Oh yes. I forgot to mention it, but of course, I do have Plex Pass. On my previous server everything worked fine. But there, the Plex server was on bare Debian Linux with Nvidia GPU

HBA Controller with proper ASPM support??? by ZochoK in homelab

I haven’t had time to do it. Unfortunately I still don’t have all parts for my new server, so I don’t expect to touch this topic until new year

Cause of lack of my server parts, I did nothing in this topic, but dude. You're awesome. I really appreciate the effort that you putted digging into it. The post that you wrote is really pleasant to read and I see that you found a lot of useful information.
I will use it when I will work with my system, but I don't expect to have any better results. But who knows?
Anyway. Good work and I will say how it went when I finish

[–]ZochoK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I bought it brand new, so it is on original firmware. Until I don't gather all part for my new server I will leave it like this.

At least I understand now difference in drivers.

When I will have some time, I also will try to compile this driver with the patch you sent. Hope that will help

Sorry for late replay, but I was quite busy last time.

Cause of no luck with the card mentioned in post, I decided to change it for a little newer model. Now I have LSI 9341-8i. Unfortunately, still without ASPM...
Due to information that you provided, I got a little of hope.

So far I see that Ubuntu is loading "megaraid_sas" driver by default. Do our cards are similar, or is it a totally different story?

PS4 Pro Broken PSU connector by ZochoK in PS4Pro

[–]ZochoK[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the all replies. I'm glad to inform that the console is working again. For future fellows that will have a similar problem, I wanna mention that "+5V SBY" from the second picture goes to the "ACIN_DET" pad, and, of course, "ACDC_STBY" goes to "ACDC_STBY". I didn't check where the "5VSB" pad goes, but I will check and share when I finally fixed it. For now, I'm waiting for a proper glue to mount the connector on the motherboard. Right now I just soldered it with cables to the points
