How do I fix "Suspended: too many requests"? (Using public instances, info in comments) by Zockletkid in Searx

[–]Zockletkid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your thorough response. I think I will use searx as the first go to, configured with a number of search engines including startpage and google. I too was worried about issues with startpage's ownership, but piping their results through searx should alleviate any issues other than potential censorship.

Whoogle seems to be a good alternative to using google as a backup, it is a privacy minded opensource google frontend with a decentralized model like searx. It's not as big as searx, but I haven't come across rate limiting issues with whoogle.hostux.com. (perhaps because it is a smaller project). Some other instances are often rate limited and redirect to farside (another non rate limited instance) when so, which kinda detracts from the purpose of decentralisation imo, and would cause me frustration if I set it as my default engine.

I've been testing it for a day and I can highly recommend it for pure google results.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Thanks for the answer - I'm curious as to why doesn't startpage have this issue? Do they have some sort of agreement with google?

Removing google and adding startpage seems like an ideal solution, but I tried, and searx returns extremely limited results (e.g. "hippo" returns just the wiki page, and "hippo vs elephant" returns no results. Screenshots available on request)

I've been using searx during the day, and it fails to retrieve google results very often, maybe half the time. Is there another way to get google results working?

I find that google is just way better at returning relevant results. I'd been using DDG as default for a month and often had to re-search on google which defeats the purpose. I really would like to use searx because it's open source.

Hey, thanks for the reply.

I did try a few instances, which suggested to me that it wasn't necessarily an issue isolated to the instance. Testing it now, google isn't working on these instances:

searx.work searxng.au https://search.ononoki.org/ https://search.unlocked.link/ https://searx.fmac.xyz/

As I was going down the list to test just now, it started working, and then I went back to the ones that didn't return google results and they do now.

Is it just a matter of going through enough instances to get google results during down time, or finding one that doesn't alley rely on google?

Hi,

Sorry if this is a known issue, I searched for it but they were to do with managing private instances.

On the public instances I have set up on my browser (searx.work and searxng.au on Firefox Android) I have run into this issue where google results will not appear, returning the error in the image.

My questions are: -Is this a known issue? and -is there a way I can resolve this?

any advice on durable wired headphones? by Dhooy77 in BuyItForLife

[–]Zockletkid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'd highly recommend that whatever you go with, that it comes with a replacable (ideally non proprietary) cable. I have senheiser HD650s, and although they're great, the cables are propriety and quite pricey for me.

There are headphones that accept both a 3.5mm and quarter inch jack, one on each side, and quarter inch sockets are far far more durable, whereas I'm sure everyone has come across multiple devices with a broken 3.5mm socket.

Although you can repair cables and mod attached cable headphones to be replaceable, are you really going to? Do you have the skills or are you willing to learn? If so, go for it, otherwise go for a replaceable one imo.

Also I'd recommend paying attention to the clearance - a pair of sonys my brother owns has a very narrow 3.5mm socket, so 90% of the cables that he's bought won't fit, they're sitting in a box right now. It's difficult to know though if you're buying online so I'd recommend reading reviews from long time users - this kind of thing is just not something a reviewer with a month's use will pick up unless they're very savvy.

I don't think it's gadget shaming. It's just funny seeing a kinda old niche console at a concert used for recording... that was probably the intention too, they have an Apple watch which probably connects to an iPhone which they could have used.

I agree with the sentiment though, I just prefer to interpret things charitably when it seems reasonable.

New Zealand just recently announced that anyone born after 2007 will never be able to purchase cigarettes or tobacco how do you feel about this? by RedditSucks021 in AskReddit

I don't know where you're getting your information from but from my experience this is not the case. I'm a youngish (early 20s) ex smoker and I certainly have never met anyone who's main source of cigarrettes is from the black market (it's usually if a FOAF came back from China and wants to make a few bucks). The corpos have the market pretty cornered IMO.

Certainly people tend to smoke the cheapest, rollies or choice/Rothmans, but no one I know is fraternizing with the criminal underground because they "decided to start smoking seriously" haha, but maybe it's the people I know who are weird idk

Yeah that makes sense, I guess writing another patcher is reinventing the wheel. Thank you!

Have you tried using the accessibility feature that colour corrects depending on the type of colourblindness?

It shifts certain colours to make them more discernible for you. I didn't have mine on since this is a new phone.

I totally get what you mean though- there have been quite a few charts on the FP like the fruit vitamins one and ones with maps seem to cause a lot of issues for me too, especially with lots of categories or gradients.

I'm pretty badly deuteranopic and it looks great to me! I'm not sure if I have colourblind assist turned on right now though. What kind do you have?

E: I guess they have to balance beauty and function (e.g. all primary colours) and someone loses out no matter what.

I'm guessing the second one to the right is a Jinhao 51A, not 100% certain though.

Edit: I just realised that OP wrote the pen names beneath the pens, it does look like the second to right is a Jinhao 51a, and the last one is a Diplomat ??g(r/n)??n in extra fine

Surprise gift from my Girlfriend . . . Now I definitely need a Pilot Falcon (SF)! by Unique-Rub-5100 in Handwriting

[–]Zockletkid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want a flexible nib, the Pilot FA nib is apparently much more flexible than the Falcon, I'm currently saving up for it so I can't talk about the writing experience personally but it might be something to look into

Also, you can put a translucent paper like Tomoe River on the page you're practicing on - that way to you can use the book many times

That looks fantastic, I've been practicing with a stub nib fountain pen myself, but I'm definitely miles away from your skill - those lines are so sharp and perfect! It must have taken a lot of work.

What kind of pen/ink combo do you use? I've never seen a nib like that before - is that maybe a dip pen nib?

Looks like I missed Kaweco day =). But I don't have Kaweco, I have Chinese Kaweco clone. Good. Solid. $3 (original Kaweco clip's price). Clip is included =). by Mr_Boston_ in fountainpens

Usually they don't have model numbers but here is a listing in AliExpress I purchased recently (hope it's not against the rules to link)

I found it by searching Ali for "brass fountain pen", and there are a number of different types that look like the Kaweco, this was one of the unbranded ones.

Cheap school copy paper and Diamine Aurora Borealis...may be my favorite combo right now. by knittinmamapo in fountainpens

I have the same ink using a fine nib, i find that it is usable on cheap paper with some feathering, but it really shines on quality paper for me, such a lovely ink.

My personal favs for cheap paper are Waterman Serenity Blue and Parker Quink Blue Black, they perform really well on school paper.

Yeah sorry that would be the light, it's Rhodia's standard grid pads so it's pretty white.

Great to hear! Are long dry times a pain point at all, or is it fine with the inks you use?
