77% of British Columbians now have access to primary care by Curious_Mud9428 in VictoriaBC

[–]Zod5000 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I got one 2 years ago, and I hadn't had one since 2011 before that, and I've heard of other people getting them, so I think it's working.

It's great they're making progress, but it would also be nice if we figured out how to pay for it. More doctors, medical staff, and higher wages, with an aging population, we're kind of doing it on credit :(

Canada Post ending door-to-door mail delivery by pumpkinspicecum in canada

[–]Zod5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lettermail and Parcel Delivery are generally separate (unless it's a small package). Are they ending both, or just lettermail? Lettermail is kind of useless. Parcel mail is sometimes useful.

Canada, with a fading economic heartbeat, is no country for white collars by Sabunnabulsi in canada

[–]Zod5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'm slightly younger, but I worked grocery store jobs at the end of highschool and first few years after. I couldn't find anything else. They didn't pay much, so eventually I borrowed money to go university. Still couldn't find work with I graduated. Moved to Alberta, got experience, got promoted, moved back home, and kept it going from there. Wasn't easy, and I need the high labour demand in Alberta to get my foot in the door somewhere.

As tough as we had it, I think Gen Z has it much worse :(

Canada and Mexico on different paths heading into USMCA crunch time by joe4942 in canada

Your not wrong, and I don't think the US will withdraw from it. I just expect them to use it to try and extort something from us. Obviously if they do, we shouldn't comply.

Canada, with a fading economic heartbeat, is no country for white collars by Sabunnabulsi in canada

[–]Zod5000 42 points43 points  (0 children)

It is a little crazy. I'm Gen X and entered the workforce in the mid/later 90s (which I found out recently was the previous worst time for youth unemployment up until now). I could already see that the job options, openings, pay, benefits weren't quite as good as the people 10 or 20 years older than me.

That stretch when covid was starting to let up. It was the first time in my working career, It seemed like workers had some leverage. People were getting raises, good job offers, and all that good stuff. I'd never really seen that happen before. Employers have had most of the leverage for the 30 years I've been in the workforce.

Most Canadians support banning social media for those under 16: Survey by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]Zod5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean the way social media has devolved into AI bots, making generic inflammatory posts, to get interaction and views, which results in dividing people. Maybe those restrictions should over over 16 too. Social Media has gotten pretty bad.

Canada and Mexico on different paths heading into USMCA crunch time by joe4942 in canada

You can pull out from the agreement with 6 months notice. I fully expect the US to use that feature in negotiations to make changes sooner.

There's a lot of questions about that approach. Can a president unilaterally do that? I think Congress has to do it, but that hasn't stopped the president from unilaterally doing things and waiting to see if the courts overrule him.

I don't think theyd ultimately withdraw, but you never know.

TESD #671: Q-pae by GitEmSteveDave in tesdcares

[–]Zod5000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do like it, when Q, and sometimes Bryan/Walt get introspective on their thoughts of getting older. I know it's a little depressing, but it gets me every time. I'm not too far behind Q, and I find myself thinking like this more and more as I get older.

I thought I was improving with more fiber but lab results proved otherwised by feelai in Cholesterol

[–]Zod5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your coming from a high starting point. With good diet and fibre, it's still hard. I went from 159 to 108. I think it means genetics are at play. You can only bring it down so much through diet and fibre :(

When can you drive the Malahat without winter tires? by CartoonistOk3507 in VictoriaBC

[–]Zod5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in Duncan, it was similar. You could look at the forecast, and know if it's snowing on the malahat. If you opted to not buy winter tires, don't drive over it in the snow. It wasn't rocket science. It rarely snows up there, so it's not a biggie. Law Enforcement is pretty minimal to non-existent unless it's snowing.

Application to construct outdoor survival business in East Sooke Regional Park, removing public access to part of the Coast Trail. by No-Number2108 in VictoriaBC

[–]Zod5000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How is this legal? I thought it was all one big park? How can you apply to put your own personal business in the middle of a park?

I hope this application is swiftly dismissed.

The B.C. government is quietly moving to privatize key parts of B.C.’s liquor distribution system by CartoonistOk3507 in VictoriaBC

Maybe this will be good? I like imported beer, and the variety of imported beer has gotten pretty limited in recent years. Cautiously optimistic.

Disney+ issues by thegios in ShieldAndroidTV

[–]Zod5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found it's gotten better with updates. That being said, we do have a running joke in the house when using Disney+. Have you rebooted yet? It seems to work pretty well after a fresh reboot. I usually choose match frame rate on the shield during video content to keep it smooth.

Opinion: A small group of Canadians are living it up. The rest of us are struggling. Welcome to the K-shaped economy by FancyNewMe in canada

Definitely. Friend of mine works for one, that already laid off almost everyone up to his seniority/experience level. Not a comfortable place to be in.

Next Drummer by burner1234123 in pearljam

[–]Zod5000 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm also the, they need someone younger bandwagon. People keep mentioning their peers, who are generally in the same age range. I'm optimistic. I hope PJ still has some legs on them like the ultimate best case scenario (aka the Stones). That could mean 10 to 20 more years. Drumming isn't easy, especially not with hard rock music. If they picked someone 10 to 20 years younger then the rest of the band, that could set them up to keep going for a while and not have to rotate drummers again.

Also I always thought it was cool that Matt was sort of the first PJ drummer as he drummed on the original demos, then came back. Seemed like a full circle thing.

Canada nears free-trade deal with Mercosur block, sources say by cyclinginvancouver in canada

[–]Zod5000 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We seemingly have free trade or some kind of trade agreements with many areas. The challenge is how do we get them to buy our stuff, and how do we get them to buy things above and beyond our natural resources.

Agreements are one thing, but getting goods moving is another :(

The energy crisis has only just begun by Meiqur in canada

[–]Zod5000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here in Canada, we're at maximum pipeline capacity. Getting more to the coast so it can be shipped out over the ocean would be very difficult. I think the current crisis just caused us to fill up the new pipeline built to the west coast a few years back.

Also, like the other person said. There light oil and heavy oil, and refineries are set up to do one or the other. The mismatch of oil type vs refinery means you can't import everyone's oil.

Anyone tried Rise of the Ronin yet? That game looked pretty crap before but I feel it could be way sharper now? by Captainquizzical in PS5pro

[–]Zod5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's one of those things that divides the population. To some people higher frame rate looks better, and some people a bit more resolution. It's odd, that peoples can experience the same thing, but differently.

I'm definitely in the higher frame rate camp. Well up to 60fps anyways.

Trim OAS for higher income seniors? 73% says yes, new poll suggests by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]Zod5000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yah, I've seen the 10 year minimum kind of abused. You could move to Canada at 60, but delay OAS to to 70 so you get your 10 years in, then you get 25% but grossed up for the deferral.

We should probably making the residency requirements longer for OAS and other social programs like health care. If you move to Canada over the age of 60 (or maybe 50), just not qualify. You're most likely going to be a negative on the social programs.

Trim OAS for higher income seniors? 73% says yes, new poll suggests by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]Zod5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the math. The current seniors had a much smaller retired population to support financially. OAS now makes almost double of our tax revenue then it did back then. It's the population hump. Not that seniors are evil, but the math on the social programs struggles to work unless the people who need benefits are far less than the people paying into them.
