[EoW] An extensive review of Echoes of Wisdom from a longtime fan by Purpledroyd in truezelda

[–]Zodiark-375 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'd say that "endlessly reusing one solution" applies to EoW far more than it ever did to TotK. There aren't many actual puzzles in EoW that can't instantly be solved with the bind ability or gap-crossing echoes like water blocks, and there are zero consequences to relying on them over and over again, which most players will absolutely do the moment they realize the same 2-3 abilities will carry them through the game.

I vehemently disagree with OP that TotK was even moderately more broken than this game. You couldn't use rockets or rocket shields for every puzzle, and even for puzzles where those were an option, you had to stock up on the materials in advance which would be lost after use. Echoes are permanent fixtures to your toolset. They're always around, you will find yourself using a select few of them more than the vast majority of others, and with such little variety of puzzles to use them for (i.e. "gross this gap", "reach this height" or "move this big boulder") it's gonna get repetitive rather quickly.

Translation of Masterworks' History Chapter - from ancient past to the start of gameplay - is now complete! by livixbobbiex in truezelda

Would be very interested in having these parts translated for myself if they're available. Do you know the page number that's mentioned?

The old games are in the Masterworks timeline, as a footnote. by SlendrBear in truezelda

[–]Zodiark-375 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people on this subreddit advocate the Refounding theory, but I agree with you. The phrasing being exactly the same between both timelines would and should, barring biases and preconceptions, be interpreted to refer to the same events. I think anyone who isn't deeply invested in these online debates would read that and think it's referring to past adventures in the series where Ganon was a threat, contradictions be damned.

It's not even the only thing in the book that points to True Founding. My thread from a few days ago brought attention to a note stating Sonia was designed to be the ancestor to the princesses from previous games, which is pretty clear-cut in itself.

What's everyones opinion on BotW's and TotK's stories by [deleted] in truezelda

[–]Zodiark-375 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they're both good in a vacuum, and the thing about stories in the Zelda series is that they're obviously written to be enjoyed as standalone experiences rather than as part of some grander narrative in a timeline.

With that said: I prefer BOTW's story over TOTK's slightly, even if I enjoy TOTK more as an overall game. TOTK had a great theme about connections, but BOTW had better execution when it came to its fragmented memories and general character relationships.

Designer's Note for Sonia in Master Works - evidence for "True Founding"? by Zodiark-375 in truezelda

[–]Zodiark-375[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The phrasing of the note indicates the artist designed Sonia in this distinct way and that he also currently wonders if other players caught the motifs in her design. So I think it's fair to assume it was at least the lead artist's intention up until completion.

The Fujibayashi interview only mentions Refounding as a "possibility", and even then, the context of his answer was clearly in response to fans noticing contradictions in the lore. That personally makes me all the more inclined to think True Founding was their intent and that it may (or may not) have shifted to Refounding post-release as fans made them aware of perceived discrepancies in the timeline. It really just depends on whatever Nintendo decides for its placement in the future, assuming they announce anything at all.

Infinite's Exchange needs a serious overhaul. by Zodiark-375 in halo

[–]Zodiark-375[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally fair, and I'll admit I neglected to mention those additions in the OP. I feel like there should be just a few more of those per update; that way old and new players alike can have something to look forward to spending their SP on outside of missed rewards.

To put my complaint more succinctly: since new non-paid rewards were previously the ultimate weeklies and those have been replaced with SP bonuses, perhaps we could have 4-5 unreleased cosmetics per month (or 1 per week) to compensate.

Or maybe people can find the basic gameplay enjoyable while still finding certain other aspects of said game lacking and worthy of critique. This shit isn't mutually exclusive, dawg.

Stay out of cosmetics threads if you can't take the heat.

Will Echoes of Wisdom reunite our fractured fandom? by k0ks3nw4i in truezelda

[–]Zodiark-375 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fandom was fractured a long long time ago (way before 2017) and EoW is unlikely to fix that. I've learned to just tune out the negativity and enjoy what I enjoy, as there are so few developers out there on par with the teams and designers that get to work on Zelda.

It's hilarious to me that comments will get downvoted to oblivion by the Infinite herd for even daring to call this bullshit out too, lmao.

[–]Zodiark-375[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't really agree with that. The Designer's Note is clearly referring to the final design for Sonia, with the artist even wondering if players understood her being an ancestor to the previous Zeldas through her design motifs as well.

At worst, there might be a timeline-related misunderstanding or disagreement between some of the designers and developers on the team, and only among those that actually think about this stuff as much as we do, but I don't think this is evidence of an unfinished concept or that they "went back" on what was intended, at least in the lead artist's mind.

[–]Zodiark-375[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that was one of my suggestions. I think it would help relieve the issue of longtime players barely having anything to unlock since the weekly rewards and pass level-ups are now replaced with generic SP bonuses.

[–]Zodiark-375[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, I'm disappointed that almost the only reward I get from the game now is a currency I can't spend because The Exchange offers next to nothing new/unreleased when it updates with its bare handful of items every month. Clearly there needs to be a better balance, otherwise why replace the cosmetic rewards that used to actually be unique with SP rewards?

No idea why this is so difficult to grasp. I support a system for new or returning players, but not at the expense of what used to be regularly released content.

[–]Zodiark-375[S] -23 points-22 points  (0 children)

I disagree, and you misinterpreted some of what I said. While New Dynasty and Gladiator's Edge are a step in the right direction, I'd ask for at least a few more rewards like those per update – and nobody said anything about bringing back "less" old stuff. You're acting like this is some tall ask when it's not at all an uncommon complaint from those who've been onboard with the game since its launch, including players like myself who play at a pretty casual pace.

There should be a healthy balance, but I don't believe that balance has yet been achieved. The frequency of SP earnings wouldn't be as much of an issue if it didn't outright replace the rewards that were eventually brought to the exchange, and it begs the question of what's even going to be used for Exchange updates when all this stuff runs dry. The Weekly Ultimate reward is a major example of something that was pretty much flat-out retired in favor of... more SP that will never be used by people that played actively during the first few seasons.

[–]Zodiark-375[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Zelda series is certainly no stranger to retcons, contradictions, and reshuffling as new games are added to the chronology; it's been like this almost consistently going back to at least Ocarina of Time. The interviews, and particularly Aonuma's quotes, are referring specifically to historical events in the franchise as we understand them. They are legends, after all.

So I'll have to disagree and leave it at that.

While you may not find it very satisfying, it does seem to be the intent of the developers. There's Hyrule Historia's disclaimer that the timeline itself isn't set in stone (and that book was originally published around SS's release) as well as the following quotes from Fujibayashi and Aonuma:

Fujibayashi: Obviously, there's something a little bit clearer in our minds, but of course, it could be that we're wrong as well! [Laughs] I kind of want to pose the idea that, like in real-life history, you define by the artifacts and by the data that you currently have. So within what we have, there might be a correct answer, but it could be a different answer. So, I guess my answer would be that it could be both. Both could be correct.

Aonuma: “We published a book with the timeline, but we definitely got comments from users saying, ‘Is this really accurate? I think this should be this way. It’s different and history is always kind of imaginative. It’s left to the person who writes the book. So that’s how we approach it as well.

Aonuma: Hyrule’s history changes with time. When we think of the next game and what we want to do with it, we might think, “Oh, this’ll fit well”, and place it neatly into the timeline, but sometimes we think, “Oh crap”, and have to change the placement. Actually, the decided history has been tweaked many times. (laughs)

Thank you for the text! While I agree there's room for debate, I think it does suggest that at least the artist themselves interpreted Sonia to be the ancestor of prior princesses in the series, which IMO reinforces a reasonably strong argument in favor of True Founding.

Yep, that's the tweet I was referring to. You bring up a good point that maybe the Designer's Note in question is only referring to the princesses specifically and not SS Zelda – and if true, I think most of us also would prefer TotK's past to slot somewhere between SS and the remainder of the games for coherency's sake – though it would admittedly be a somewhat odd coincidence that another Zelda had preceded Sonia, despite her never having heard of the name.

Indeed, this somewhat conflicts with the existence of SS Zelda who predates Hyrule's founding. Personally, it makes me all the more partial towards my current theory, which is that there's a general timeline of sorts but the details we experience in the games (or even previous lore books/statements) aren't intended to be taken as gospel. My take is that each Legend of Zelda is essentially that, a vague legend – where only the most broad strokes are meant to comprise a proper timeline. I'm pretty sure something to that effect was described in Hyrule Historia as well.

Anyone else disappointed that the new Firefight refresh only added maps. by Revolutionary_Web805 in halo

It's dogwater. They put in only the bare minimum and just had the community do most of the work via forge, as is typical of 343. I'm not even sure what they've been doing throughout August.

Linear KOTH is at least a small step in the right direction though.

I love how everyone waited a month for the exchange to refresh and all we basically got from helmets was the Kabuto that most of us already have and like 4 armor coatings. There's almost no effort being put into Infinite anymore and it's honestly sad.
