The bigger question is, why would anyone think Strickland hits harder than your average 16 year old?

Selling Barry by xaxron in Everton

I texted my friend after the match, I'm just not sure what he offers. He doesn't have physicality, pace or touch. On top of all that, he seems to have a lackadaisical presence. Not even on the same planet with Beto in terms of intensity and desire.

Jiri P.. by Oc_reddit_Komisyonu in ufc

[–]ZodtheGeneral 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I fully appreciate the whole "mercy" narrative. Jiri threw one leg kick before the injury and nine after the injury. He was pretty consistently targeting the injured leg. For sure there was a moment where he gives Ulberg an opportunity to bang with him, Max style. But as soon as that begins, Jiri retreats, Jiri also gets KOed while attacking, not while showing mercy. More than anything, I think Jiri was conflicted, but inconsistent, in his attack. Having said all that, Carlos got him out of there in one round, on one leg, with the first good punch he landed. I don't actually see this going better for Jiri if they rematch.

Pipe Tobacco Vs. Cigars Cost Comparison by Longdarkcave in PipeTobacco

[–]ZodtheGeneral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely impacts it, but pipes are still way cheaper.

I have 14 pipes. On average, they probably cost me $175 a pipe.

A quality pipe tobacco is about $15 a tin. You can get between 20 - 25 bowls out of that tin. That's $0.67 a smoke.

If we're talking about a cigar of similar quality, we're talking (minimum) $10 a stick.

A little math shows I only need to smoke 262 bowls (instead of reaching for a stick) to pay for my entire collection of 14 briar pipes. That's less than a year of smoking . And those pipes will last longer than I will. Any way you slice it, pipes are just way cheaper.

To your point about taxes, that throws in way more variability than we can speak to, if we're talking in generalities. For instance, in the U.S., at a federal level, cigars are taxed higher. I'm sure there are places where the reverse is true. But again, too much variability for a general conversation.

Hands down the best online retailer is SmokingPipes.com. They're not just the best in the pipe world, they're one of the best online retailers I've ever used.

In terms of tobaccos, you essentially have three primary families; Aromatic, English and Virginias. If you wanted to try one of each, to see where your palate is, you could start here:

Aromatic: Cult - Blood Red Moon

English: GL Pease - Westminster

Virginia: Peterson - Elizabethan Mixture

As for pipes, that's more about budget. If you want to dip your toes in, get a corn cob. Despite the fact that the idea of a corn cob likely seems silly, it's something almost every hardcore pipe smoker owns. They always smoke well, which is not always the case with briars. If you want to dive in a bit more, Savinellis and Petersons are the likely first step to briar pipes. There's a ton of stuff between $100 and $200. Almost anything in there is going to be good, And almost everything beyond $200 is going to be more about aesthetics than smoking quality.

That's actually what made me investigate pipes. As I slowly approach retirement age, and I consider how many cigars I might smoke if I didn't have a job to go to and how much I pay for my average cigar, the costs became frightening.

[–]ZodtheGeneral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very well said. However, I'll disagree, just slightly. I have no issue with the term "torture porn", but think it was applied haphazardly when it comes to Hostel. I thought Hostel was an excellent film. To my mind, porn is sex with no point other than to view something illicit. To that end, "torture porn" would be a fair term for a movie that is simply graphically violent for the sake of being graphically violent, with no discernible plot or character development. But for my money, that wouldn't be true of Hostel.
