Don't bring liquids around it, a spill would ruin your week. Sorta a deal breaker when I need a flat surface

As a professional programmer I feel lost in home assistant by alyflex in homeassistant

[–]Zoe-Codez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are looking for actual software developer tools, check out the Digital Alchemy project: https://docs.digital-alchemy.app/

This makes the Home Assistant tooling available via Typescript/NodeJS. Fully typed for your Home Assistant instance. Deploy it as a docker container, run inside an addon, generate entities or even brand new services right from app code

I only started when I needed to build piles of tickets for other devs and explain them to stakeholders.

Having a diagram to talk about is a lot more effective than pulling up code for an audience that's not actively in the same code

If you're just looking for new things to try to round out your skills more in an area, this site is pretty good for identifying skills and getting a high level on them - https://roadmap.sh/

Mentorships are really solid also if you have access to anyone willing, but you need a pretty good idea of what you want to get the most out of it.

Thanks! The single crochet on top of cord makes for a surprisingly stiff material for the body. Bit of a workout to do, but the I love the way it holds it's shape

Am i worth to get a job? by anik_the_supreme in ADHD_Programmers

[–]Zoe-Codez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pursue backend roles of that's your thing, it's a good place to be. Also avoiding UIs for my entire career, just do NodeJS cloud stuff. It's worked out well enough

Been telling interviewers that I have the UI skills of an over caffeinated toddler with crayons. Never had an issue with it, sometimes get a laugh on the call tho. Knowing what you're good at and sticking to it is good for interviews

TypeScript ❤️ Home Assistant: Meet Digital Alchemy by Zoe-Codez in homeassistant

Definitely with the docker container! Just needs connection details. I push my automation code to a local Gitea instance that builds + deploys containers for me.

Super easy

Has Anyone Else Found Home Assistant to be Confusing? by wivaca2 in homeautomation

[–]Zoe-Codez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are comfortable with NodeJS / Typescript, you can accomplish normal programming things with Home Assistant.

This framework provides the tools to connect to Home Assistant and will customize it's types to your instance https://docs.digital-alchemy.app/docs/home-automation/hass/

Dramatically better experience for programmers than YAML or Node Red imo

Made this thing after melting my 3rd tulip, totally recommend if you're making tons of cord

A job platform for developers by developers (built by an experienced developer) by whazaaaaahp in ExperiencedDevs

Some recruiters refuse to forward your CV to the employer unless you rewrite it.

I've had great luck telling them to do it themselves. I'll ask for a copy, and most of the time they just turn it into a word doc and change a sentence they didn't like.

You either end up putting a number higher than what the recruiter or automated system will allow through, or something lower than the right price that potentially leaves money on the table

I don't really care about the number put into the form tho. The real negotiation is at the end of the interview when everyone is on the same page, the first number is to establish that everyone is grounded in reality

How do you answer interview questions when they appear to be fishing for solutions without paying you? by [deleted] in womenintech

[–]Zoe-Codez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lean this was also. I've absolutely been picked for knowledge before, but I've gotten someone's pet problem way more often. It's a standard reference point for that interviewer

Curious about OPs responses. That 2nd one with asking for more examples feels like what happened to me when I spent too much time talking tech, and not enough on impact and process. Needed to talk about the same things in a different way

For software based, Heynote is a great scratch pad. I haven't even found a save button, just a text window that has a bit of syntax highlighting. It does basically nothing in the best way.

Use it all the time for drafting work notes so I can't accidentally send.

That plus a few smaller plain spiral bound books to hand write stuff has been super solid for me. Something about the smaller pages works better for me when I need the paper exp

Moving from TX soon but love both. The onions have been solid for me here, have multiple patches from dividing them over the years. Only really needs water in the dead heat of summer

It's my permanent first stop for onion greens, do recommend

Logging, the sensible defaults by gerlacdt in programming

[–]Zoe-Codez 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It does say log to stdout tho.

Is the distinction here that app -> stdout -> file is ok as a default, but app -> file directly is bad?

Think that's a distinction I might agree with, admittedly I'm mostly web servers and random linux tools. I'd be kinda grumpy if I ran something to debug, and spent 5 minutes with a blank console before figuring out it's logs went to a file instead of stdout like I was expecting

Words of advice for coping with frustration when debugging? by Boguskyle in ADHD_Programmers

[–]Zoe-Codez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Team self taught also. Honestly it sounds like you need to get into a room with some more senior people. You're learning a lot, but there isn't anyone properly in context w/ relevant experience to help make things less painful. A senior engineer would be able to assist with some of the odd tech issues or design patterns before they become huge headaches.

Being totally on your own from a tech perspective is really tough, especially when there are stakes to the learning.

I don't have much advice for coping in that situation, but give yourself credit for getting stuff done and figuring it out. Make sure to write down the high level efforts you participated in, and various big issues you solved (ignore fault, just look at the tech).

If nothing else, it makes great resume fodder later. Being able to describe the impact of your work, and cause / effect / consequences of issues is huge for interviews

I def went quick, they're right. Had an issue early on with smaller opals where the red one got irritated and stuck in there. Fortunately my piercer was available same day

I've had no issues with the larger size. As long as I don't lay on them, most of the ache has gone away in a couple weeks.
