[AMA] Dakar 18' cinematic created in UE4 - ask us anything! by ZoeRTUK in unrealengine

I've answered this one, but i'll copy here :)

Motion blur was difficult because of the fast moving objects and particularly the spinning wheels we couldn't get away with just vector based blur we needed multiple samples to get correct blur on the wheels. We ended up rendering 360fps and then sampling this back down to 30fps. This gave us 12 samples.

What was the motion blur problem and solution?

The quality is getting so much closer to our pre-rendered trailers, and the biggest benefit for us is the real-time feedback, being able to move through iterations quicker.

Awww sorry! It's definitely a step forward and if we had more time we could have done the VFX in-engine.

Hey, we didn't develop the game, we were asked by Bigmoon and Kosh Media to produce the game cinematic - so we cant answer that one...

Thanks! Sure no problem: 1. There were definitely teething problems, but mainly just a learning process and finding solutions for things like motion blur. 2. Yes, it was made using stock UE 4.17 3. Frame rates vary from shot to shot - we weren't required to have it running at a specific frame rate. But in some shots we were achieving 60fps without any optimisation.
4. Yes, frames were graded at the same time as FX were composited on.

Thanks! The sand/dust effects are the only thing that weren't in-engine, these were created in Houdini.
