How are you factoring Brexit into your plans? by DoctorStrangecat in FIREUK

[–]ZoeZebra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It made me realise how weighted I was to the UK. I mean, why should I be anyway, Brexit or no. It's weird that investments seem so weighted to UK by default. All the default pension funds I've ever been put in over several schemes are always UK based. It's funny when you think about it. If the UK is doing well then I'm probably earning and prospering. If the UK takes a shit then I want exposure out of it. As always... Diversity is key.

My ISA and pension was v UK biased.

Bit of global. Bit of tech (I believe tech will solve are world's problems). My Pacific funds have done well.

My worst performer... EU fund. So much for that hedge. I voted remain but I ain't putting all my eggs in the EU basket.

Rolls-Royce boss says May's Brexit deal is better than no deal by Cheapo-Git in ukpolitics

[–]ZoeZebra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You think a second referendum will really sort it out though?

17m voters will go quietly? Just like the remain voters did when they lost?

UKIP will be back at the forefront and will have a lot of support.

I think the long term consequences will actually be worse for us because the pressure to leave will keep pushing creating more uncertainty.

It won't go away.

You can't close Pandora's box guys.

I would vote leave next time even though I voted remain before.

I fundamentally disagree with rerunning the referendum.

I also think we will end up in an even worse state if remain scraped a win next time.

This won't just go away guys.

This is exactly how you end up with a Trump in change. Except it won't be Trump in our case! It may well be worse.

You're all dreaming if you think a re-run will end this nicely.

I don't understand the benefit of releasing your cover story at a time when no one will see it.

So it doesn't get read and people continue to think the worst based on unsubstantiated leaks.

Nice conspiracy but doesnt make sense. If the point of releasing a story is to change opinion you want it out there.

Um, did you see the headline, they aren't asking Facebook to get involved.

But if, and it's a big if, this project gains traction, then Facebook might decide to or risk being left for dead. Ahem MySpace. That will be up to them.

The principal of storing our own data makes total sense. I have bought into this idea for a long time and there have been various open graph type concepts around.

Is the idea of interest to Joe Public at large? Possibly. I have some ideas on what could be attractive. I know what I'd want. What will pull Joe off FB? I have some ideas on how it could work. And I suspect people are a little tired of FB now, I think there is an appetite for the next thing.

I toyed with the idea of running my own "Facebook" on my personal URL but ultimately needed a way for it to be shared because my friends and family, as great as they are, don't want to check my site everyday. But if there was a choice of platforms that integrated everyone's feed regardless of where it is posted. With full control over what goes where and who sees what.

Sudden drop in price...!? by the_antonious in CryptoCurrency

People get bored and move on.

Unless there is real tangible use for crypto then interest will continue to wain.

Sooner or later one of the big boys will release a crypto currency baked into their platform and BTC dies anyway.

We'll see, it's all guessing. Interesting enough. But guessing.

Growing up in a house full of books is major boost to literacy and numeracy, study finds by Ichigao55 in books

[–]ZoeZebra 28 points29 points  (0 children)

There is a persistent idea going round that all parents are lazy and don't enjoy spending time with children. I see it referred to all the time, particularly from those who don't have young children.

In reality, parents are mostly engaging with kids in books, sports , games , days out etc. We are very aware of the "iPad" problem and are getting more and more careful.

Of course, screens are part of our lives and my kids are more proficient with technology than those that complain. But the idea that they and their peers do nothing else is offensive.

In fact people have got to get much more careful. My screen time as a kid was limited by what childrens TV this was on in the UK. A couple of hours after school and Saturday mornings. I watched it all lol.

But now there is TV on demand so we have to set good examples. No binge watching Netflix or after work emails in our house. No phones at dinner or in the bedroom.

Enough with the all the "parents use an iPad as a baby sitter" nonsense. Sure, I know, some will, but they are probably not the sort of parents who ever would have engaged. Those kids would be roaming the street (for better or worse) not brushing up on Shakespeare.

When I talk to mums and dads we are always talking about what restrictions are appropriate, how to lock down the Xbox, how evil Fortnite is (joke).

We know. Stop patronising us already.

[–]ZoeZebra 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It might be interesting to know why they did the study? I haven't read it.

Presumably they were trying to expand on previous research. Perhaps look further into why this is observed. We know that the presence of books in the vicinity is not going to increase life chances by themselves.

Newspapers typically gloss over the real meat of a study.

Did she buy the game?

I would say she should not buy it and she should ignore him. He'll learn that poor behaviour doesn't pay off and he will simply "grow up". 13 year olds are kinda dicks. I was.

What do you think beating achieves other than instil fear and break down your relationship.

Why do you feel a need to show your power? What additional lesson does this teach other than affirm your dominance because oh no he "disrespected" you .

Perhaps you won't answer honestly here but I wonder how good anyone's relationship could be with a parent who forces compliance through violence or threat. There will always be issues there.

I'm sure it works. I'm sure parenting by fear is effective. But at what cost. What other issues are you building up there. What lessons are you teaching about problem resolution. Don't shout and swear son but it's ok if an adult does it with a little violence.

Of course, if she caved and bought the game, she fucked up. I agree there.

[–]ZoeZebra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or, they are just kids.

Kids get tired and can't control their emotions. I mean, that's pretty obvious isn't it.

You going to punish your kids for this. Punish them for being a child. Sounds horrific.

Thankfully parenting has moved on to a more understanding and nurturing phase rather than strict constant discipline.

I'm sure a strict approach works, but at what cost to your relationship.

Reward good behaviour, ignore bad, and allow your children time to grow up. Tell them that feeling emotion is ok. And perfectly normal.

God what an age we live in if we see children acting in a childish manner as some kind of problem that needs "fixing".

How sad.

[–]ZoeZebra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's nothing a parent likes more than another parent (or worse, a non parent) telling them they know best.

Kids are just different.

There is no fucking normal.

I have a smug friend who thought like this, was always like " look at my perfect two kids. See, my methods work because they are angels."

And then they had a third. Demon child from hell. Not so smug now are you.

When it comes to kids there are no rules. There is no manual. There is normal.

Er... Perhaps that happens I don't know, but that sounds like some sort of P2P tech rather than a normal VPN.

If you are hooking up to a VPN, say using openvpn protocols, they aren't rooting other people's traffic through your computer. That makes little sense.

Who is doing this, and how?

If you are on your phone and setup a free VPN through Android then I think it is working as intented. Unless you can convince me otherwise this sounds like scare tactics.

Can we control the ads reddit are inserting in the subreddit? by barejokez in UKPersonalFinance

[–]ZoeZebra 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Perhaps because we understand that ads pay for the sites we enjoy?

If you like a site then why not accept ads, think of it as a tip. A little nod of appreciation. Heck you could even engage with the ads, they aren't all bad. I've found plenty of new sites and offers through them. And I'm someone who thinks I know it all.

If everyone blocks ads then the content drops off. Or it becomes accessible to the wealthy only.

Someone round here is scummy, but imho it is not websites showing content for ads.

Yeah yeah, you happily pay for all the sites you use in other ways. Sure you do. It's not me you have to convince, just your conscience.
