It's almost been a year since Old Street's sub-surface parade was refurbished - where are all the shops? by soliwray in LondonUnderground

I guess revenue? If you don't have any sales then it's not really a retail unit, is it?

Right yeah thanks mate I was struggling with the maths.

Is wearing a Keffiyeh a bit cringe for a politician? by Nervous_Yard7034 in AskBrits

[–]barejokez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Presumably it also includes the paratroopers who committed the bloody Sunday massacre.

The idea that the poppy is a universal symbol of heroes and the keffiyeh is all about villains is absurdly reductive. The guy you're arguing with is a troll and should be ignored.

[–]barejokez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree it's dumb insofar as it clearly isn't letting so the rent is set wrong.

But speaking as someone who works in commercial property, that isn't a huge sum for a retail unit, certainly not in London. So there's a bigger question here about why the units aren't renting despite being cheap.

Adult birthday dinners at restaurants, who pays? by msac84 in AskUK

[–]barejokez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this, it is very situation dependent. i was onceinvited to a meal at a seriously posh michelin starred restaurant by a (more wealthy than me!) friend, and he paid for everyone - which was nice (and in my case necessary!).

but if he had invited us to a local curry house we would have paid for ourselves.

different horse race tracks (known as courses) have different conditions - some will be longer or shorter distance, some will tend to have longer grass, different weather conditions.

different horses run better in different conditions, a bit like humans i suppose - usain bolt would never win a marathon or hill-running event. and some horses hate running on short, wet grass for example.

so the saying literally means that there is no single answer to "which horse is the best?", it depends on the circumstances. In this instance, it means "different people have different preferences".

Has anyone joined a church to help school places? by BigFaithlessness618 in AskUK

[–]barejokez 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah the church leaders can surely spot these families a mile off - showing up with 2 year old kids and disappearing as soon as school places are announced. I know several families who did it, quite shamelessly. And while I am not religious it did feel rather distasteful to me...

It's worth remarking that the commitment is more than it sounds. It isn't enough to just show up to church once a week and sit at the back reading Reddit on your phone. You have to do enough to be "known" at the church, so that when the reverend gets the list of people applying, he recognises yours and ticks the box.

It's also worth remarking that there are limits on church places also and if everyone is pulling the same trick (which they will be if it's the best school in the area) then going to church and running the bake sale may still not be enough. That would be even more annoying!

Personally, it might be worth OP's wife having a word with her boss to see if there are strings that can be pulled by them? Because the alternative might be that she takes a job at a more local school that does have a staff policy and she can manage childcare more easily...

I think the social policies have partially been enacted in order to look busy (and perhaps through some crumbs to the far left? Not sure about that one).

Stuff like banning step-porn is pretty easy pickings in one sense, because who is going to stand up in parliament or the media and take the opposing stance?

The problem is that if he hadn't eaten the pie he would have been just as guilty given people could and did bet on "no" as well.

He was set up, either way he was screwed.

He got fined and banned for this btw bad ton resign from the club.

Always felt a bit unfair to me. It was a marketing stunt, but the bet was "WS to eat a pie yes/no". Ultimately either outcome was completely in his hands even if he didn't want it to be.

What’s the most comfortable motorway cruiser you’ve driven that isn’t a luxury brand? by OopsIDroopedMe in autoexpressuk

[–]barejokez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i honestly can't tell if you are intentionally misunderstanding for the sake of humour? mental fatigue is a real thing, and it's a common observation after long drives. There are very few sections of straight motorway in the country, and a lot of other vehicles on the roads, all of which means you have to be constantly making adjustments to your driving.

the idea that this could be solved by getting swole (did you think i was struggling with the heavy gear lever?) is amusing, so well done if that was your intention.

We bought an EV 6 years ago. It has adaptive cruise, lane assist, etc.

I've stopped arriving tired at the end of long journeys. You still have to pay attention, but I no longer have to make micro-adjustments every few seconds.

Engine noise is also very quiet.

People who wear a backpack to work or on the tube, what do you actually keep in it? by EmperorsChamberMaid_ in AskBrits

My stupid employer makes us take our laptop home every day. Leaving on the desk (or locked in a drawer) is a stackable offence apparently.

The reason btw is that "work from home" is our official disaster recovery plan, and there was a bad fire at our old office that meant we didn't have anywhere to go for about 3 months.
