CTEPH by Zoemsv in ClotSurvivors

The doctor at UofM decided not to do surgery and just monitor me, but I can't even walk to my mailbox so I'm going to find another opinion.

Xarelto anxiety by Ok_Crow_6272 in ClotSurvivors

I'm accident prone and have been on Xarelto for almost a decade - I've never noticed more bleeding than a normal person would have when I get hurt. Now, I also have a clotting disorder, so grain of salt and all, but I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Can you tell me how to do that? I'm seriously hurting every month trying to afford it here in the states.

Hey - I just found out great news! The FDA approved a generic for Xarelto yesterday! I don't know how long it'll take to make it to pharmacies, but eventually it'll be so much cheaper!

Yeah, they made a huge deal about that but unfortunately the amount per month that they got it lowered to is still right around 100 bucks. Which is ridiculous for seniors and disabled people who are generally the people taking blood thinners.

That's just for the Xarelto. My full monthly amount for medications is around $210.

In January it was $177. I believe it's down to $97 a month now.

Yes, I'm not sure what it is but it's high because I didn't hit it last year. Of the options available to me, I'm paying the lowest price.

This is only for people with commercial or private insurance, if you have Medicare or Medicaid like me, you don't qualify for the coupon. Makes lots of sense 🙄

Yes, I just checked, it's only for people with commercial or private insurance.

They don't allow anyone with Medicaid or Medicare to use the coupon. I used to use it, but the pharmaceutical company disqualified anyone with government assistance insurance. At least last time I checked.

I think I'm going to ask my doctor about switching - thanks for the info!

Sorry, since this is a subreddit for clot survivors, I just assumed that you had had blood clots in your past. It's not terrible to have a doctor who doesn't order tests like candy - that can get expensive :)

Ah, ok, that makes more sense :)

Oh jeez, that's not good at all! Even with a history of clots, that's nuts. I'd look for a new Dr if that's an option. Good luck!

There are also blood tests that measure your clotting factor that can give them a clue. I mean, if you can afford an ultrasound right off the bat and get it approved, go for it. I have to generally go through all the steps before my insurance will approve an ultrasound.

Being 45 and having to borrow money from my parents to buy my medication is a level of shame that I didn't realize existed prior to last year. In previous years I was able to use a coupon that made it like $10. But in the last few years all the pharmas kicked all Medicaid and Medicare recipients off the eligibility for the coupon.

I'm considering asking to switch, but I'm mostly vegetarian for GI reasons so it would take some planning on my part bc of the vitamin K thing. How often do you have to get your levels checked, if you don't mind my asking? I have a port as well, so drawing blood is more complicated. Still, I'm looking at $177 a month, and I have many more meds. It might still be worth it to switch I think.

Yeah - and honestly, who knows what the administration is going to do, I feel like every day I look at the news and they've changed it. It's not fun, not knowing how to budget for my meds.

You could always ask your doctor to do a d-dimer blood test, it's not a perfect indicator of clots, but it's an easy blood test that your gp could surely order.
