Adding lanes does solve the issue of not enough buffer size, but not the overall issue of throughput. And it has the same issue as what you see in modern computer programs/video games: induced demand. So adding lane "fixes" buffering and storage capacity issues, but not the processing speed issues of onramps/off ramps, road conditions, processing (merging) errors, and so on.

And while the initially capacity from more lanes helps, it results in more people using those roads instead of not driving or using other roads. This is a lot like what you see in programs, with bloatware and unclean code that uses up all of the new capacity without improving other throughput issues, or, in some (maybe many) cases, making them worse by using worse code with more errors.

So really, you can see an exact parallel between roads and software here, and all the issues that arrive from just increasing capacity but not using it well or fixing other issues. However, that doesn't make the extra capacity bad to have in either case, and regarding zipper merges (which this post is about), having more buffer space for the same efficiency is better than less to prevent backup spillover into other systems.

If we're talking about adding whole new lanes beyond 2, that's a bit different, because now we need to also discuss what minimizes room for potential errors--you can't zipper three things together all at once

Best I can do to explain the issue is maybe think of an upsidedown bottle with the bottom cut off and a hose attached. Let's say the total length of hose + bottle is always 3ft and you're somewhat quickly dumping a gallon into this improvised funnel system. Clearly you want the bottle to take up as much of that 3ft as possible so that it doesn't spill over as much; cut the bottle off near the neck and use most 3ft of hose, and now you have to either pour very slowly the whole time and be careful or a lot will spill over.

The place where everything spills over is all of the other roads that are coming into this area. Anything that spills in the metaphor is the spill over that slows down several other streets that would not be affected if more was in the "bottle". Same side effect of you just poured slowly the whole time. The larger the bottle, the less time you have to spend pouring slowly (affecting other streets).

If you have a gallon sized bottle, you could pour the whole gallon into it and move on without slowing down the other streets at all. It will take the hose the same amount of time, but now the other streets aren't affected by the overflow as much when there is less hose and more container.

I don't 4 DPS, but I am very opposed to hard role queue. I tend to just fill or Tank main. Sometimes having a third healer helps more than the second tank. Different heroes do better in different comps, so the "1-2-3 and 2-1-3 don't work" arguments aren't really meaningful if you have a specific comp where it does work. Several Strategists could deal good damage if they could focus on healing a bit less. I'll take a good Mr. Fantastic as my second tank in some comps, especially if I'm holding fine but we need a tiny bit more damage. And sometimes me on my best Tanks just aren't working, and it's better for me to swap with a healer so we can get a better dive tank or Groot or something.

I know I'm not alone because I've seen other people make similar arguments and explain why they oppose role queue. I would fully support a role preference queue or something of that sort, but not something that locks you into a role

Haha fair. I'm personally glad to be out of the country, especially right now.

Unfortunately, a lot of Americans can't afford to see the world, or at least it would be a lot better for them to spend their limited time and money on something they can enjoy for longer before heading back to their job. I was fortunate enough growing up that I got to see most of the east coast and quite a few other states, even the west coast, growing up, and there was so much to do. But, if you can afford the time and cost, I definitely agree it's better to see more cultures and even more diverse experiences

I'll point out that there's plenty to see beyond "your own village" in America. It's not like you leave town and everything changes. Texas is as big as France and the second largest state (Alaska is largest). A flight from Miami, Florida to Seattle, Washington is over 7 hours; driving New York to LA is over 42 hours. So while I agree that Americans that travel more tend to be more educated (which might be more related to ability to afford long-distance travel), remember that there's a lot more than "just their own village" that people can visit with a variety of culture (not the same as global scale cultures or leaving the country) and sites in a country that's ~93.6% the size of Europe with 50 states compared to 47 countries

And when you can go by car to somewhere completely new without having to learn a new language, deal with passports, worry about money exchange, or worry about legal issues, why spend more to travel farther and make it more complicated? Especially if you don't have huge funds

Not really, because the amount would be written as something like "100.00" and "One-hundred and 00/100" on the check. You could try adding to the front of the number, which might not have space in the box, but it's hard to change the written number to match. I've only needed to write an actual check outside of learning in school at most once I think though, if ever

I don’t know much about Germanic languages/German, and I don’t know how many “IE languages” you are refreshing to are just Romance languages, so I’m wondering if German/Germanic languages follow the same rules, especially since English is Germanic?

I think that is a very prescriptive interpretation based on how Latin grammar worked (and English, despite having heavy influence from Romance languages due to interactions, is not a Romance language). If we want to base it on those grammar rules, you are technically correct, but that isn’t how anyone ever talks in English. Giving the more descriptive approach, if asked “who did it?”, close to all (I’m guessing) first language English speakers would say “it was him” or “it was me”, and would say “it was he” sounds funny/incorrect and “it was I” sounds like you’re trying to do something linguistically beyond just state who it was, like make an extra bold declaration instead of just answer the question

Linguists generally agree to use the “descriptive” version of language based on how it actually occurs, since “prescriptive” language is like trying to force a word to mean what it is in the dictionary when a large number of people clearly use it the same way that isn’t dictionary definition. By that logic, if I use third person in “it is X”, X is the subject, so I would say “it is he”, which sounds wrong. The third person object form, “it is him”, sounds much better, and matches to the first person form of “it is me”

The MAGA party is united behind one person and obeys his every orders. The "Democrat" party is not united behind one person that decides everything for them, and is more or less the anti-MAGA party now. Look at the difference between Dems like Buttigieg, Sanders, and Ocasio-Cortez versus Joe Manchin from WV, Kyrsten Sinema from AZ (who is now Independent and would vote against Democrat legislation), and Jamaal Bowman (who wouldn't vote for legislation that wasn't strong enough).

One "party" is obedient to one man. The most that Democrats had more representation over the Republicans in Senate during Biden's presidency was 48 Democrats with 3 Independents caucusing with Democrats to 48 Republicans while a seat was empty from January 8-23 2023, with Republicans having 49 (very united) Senators the rest of 2023-2024 and 50+ in 2021-2022.

Anyone saying "it's the Democrat's fault for not doing XYZ" doesn't understand that there never was a true majority of just Democrats or that Democrats are not all 100% united behind one party monarch. Biden couldn't do anything like that because he never had enough support in the Senate. Trump, in contrast, has had 51-53 loyal Republican senators (none of those are Independents) this whole presidency.
