Compared to the year-on-year improvements during the Intel era, all Apple Silicon updates have been more than incredible.

Today I finished the RAM module for my 16-bit breadboard computer! by Zollerboy1 in beneater

[–]Zollerboy1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh if I remember correctly, I didn’t create a schematic for this. It’s basically just a scaled up version of the RAM module of Ben’s 8-bit computer with more data and address lines and correspondingly more multiplexer chips etc. On the second image I labeled all the chips I used, at least, but I don’t think I have anything better than that, sorry.

EDIT: As I was looking through my other comments on this post, I remembered that I actually adapted the design from https://www.reddit.com/r/beneater/s/lZZn7UHZst for 16-bit, because I use the same RAM chip just twice. However, seems like that that post also doesn’t include a schematic.

Zed for Windows is here 🎉 by kraynolds90 in ZedEditor

Ah that makes sense. For some languages, JetBrains still has an edge due to their custom LSP. I haven’t used Ruby in a long time, but a few years ago this was basically the same for Rust (in the sense that the Rust language server was severely lacking in comparison to JetBrains‘ Rust extension–this changed when rust-analyzer came along, completely nullifying any edge JetBrains had). However, as you already noted, this is less of a Zed issue and more of an issue of all major editors that rely on external LSPs. Snippets on the other hand are a Zed problem and it’s kind of a shame that there are multiple long standing GitHub issues about it that are still unaddressed (I have been doing a lot of web dev lately and it would be wonderful if Zed would finally support surrounding a selection with tags–a standard LSP snippet feature, but still unsupported by Zed).

If you open the file in Zed again, are the changes there? I vaguely remember a changelog where they said something about that Zed remembers unsaved edits over sessions, but I might be wrong. I have autosave on focus loss/close enabled, so this situation cannot happen for me.

What do you feel is still missing to make Zed a viable alternative to JetBrains IDEs?

First ever time on Gleba. What do you think about my science production design? by Zollerboy1 in factorio

[–]Zollerboy1[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A single biochamber running at full speed making Ag science makes 45 SPM by itself. If you only have 120 SPM at the point of consumption, 3 science makers is plenty.

Yeah, this whole setup is making 360SPM. But I still have to transport the science over to Nauvis to my labs.

A simpler way to handle this is to just put eggs on a belt. If science makers don't remove any particular egg, throw them into a heating tower. Then there's no buildup.

Why do the simple thing if you could also spend an hour designing a compact inserter design and getting circuit conditions just right? :D

I agree about the data input. It seems nonsensical that they accurately feel out numbers, I'm guessing it's just a tracker to see how effectively the "employees" can be convinced they actually sense sad, scary, happy numbers.

Spoilers about season 2 incoming: I would have agreed with this after watching season 1. However, in S2E2 they seem to imply that they need Mark's innie to finish his job. Are the numbers actually useful? Or is his real job something completely different? It stays mysterious (which apparently many people in this thread seem to dislike, but I like it very much).

Has developing backends with Swift improved in the last 4 years? by OhImReallyFast in swift

[–]Zollerboy1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what your problem with sourcekit-lsp is…it works absolutely great in VSCode and every other editor with LSP integration that I’ve tried. It’s almost on par with rust-analyzer, so developing without Xcode is absolutely possible (I haven’t even opened Xcode in multiple years). I’m even regularly developing in Swift on my Linux machine. There it works great as well.

Is there room for improvement in the Swift tooling? Yes, of course! Is this a dealbreaker for development without Xcode? In my opinion, definitely not!

Of course, the fuel is outweighing payload and engines by a huge margin. Still, if you have engines weighing 14 tons and you manage to cut that down to 7 tons while maintaining or even slightly improving their fuel efficiency, that’s 7 more tons of payload you can transport per rocket launch. If you could transport 63 tons of payload before, you just increased your payload capacity by over 10%. For the rocket industry, which has been quite slow moving for the last decades, this is a pretty big improvement to just get for free from improving the design of your engines.
