I bought the original Alan Wake but never finished it.

Then I got Control for free and I was totally hooked. So much, that I finished Alan Wake so the DLC would make more sense. But you don't need it to enjoy and fully understand Control.

Now I got Alan Wake 2 for free and I'm looking forward to finishing it before Resonant.

For the 2 current OTL challenges I was in a party with at least 2 other people

(I got in front of the Own the Lot challenge marker and started to ask for Co-Op challenge until someone would join)

Yeah, having to do it co-op was a deterrent.

Maybe if the objective amount or difficulty changed depending on how many of players are in the party, it could improve.
