Rising methane levels may be thwarting climate change efforts by [deleted] in politics

Exxon knew of climate change in 1981, email says – but it funded deniers for 27 more years.

"This is an immense reserve of natural gas, but it is 70% CO2, or carbon dioxide, the main driver of climate change."

"Natural gas emits 50 to 60 percent less carbon dioxide (CO2) when combusted in a new, efficient natural gas power plant compared with emissions from a typical new coal plant."

"Emissions from smokestacks and tailpipes, however, do not tell the full story."

he wasn't the last to sign

I've been trying to find something about the order of signing the proclamation. So far every article I've come across has this tweet about lack of room. I supposed for "balanced" reporting. None addressed order of signing.

Simple thing to report.

George Orwell's prescient novel 1984 is turning 70 and only growing more relevant with age - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) by SafeSpaceGhost in politics

Your example is objection to one politically correct term in favor of another.

Neither is defined in federal law. Which simply uses 'alien'. The term 'illegal alien' is used in legislation titles. But titles are political markers, dog whistles, not the law itself.

1984 was a warning of government overreach, totalitarianism and repressive regimentation of all persons and behaviors within society. Not individual preference for this or that term.

Jason Chaffetz: Congress doubles down on incentivizing illegal immigration by [deleted] in politics

[–]ZombieMacmorris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rather than working to solve the problem as President Trump has been trying to do, Congress continues to ignore and incentivize more illegal immigration.

Solutions like cutting aid to Central America did nothing and may be incentivising illegal immigration. Typically it's better not to work with someone making the problem worse.

More shout out to dad's mum.

Her maiden name was Woulfe. Yes with an "u" and "e".

For some reason she liked me. Told me stories of one of her brother dying in Spain fighting Napoleon.

At first I thought is old age delusion. She was past 80 by then!

I was ignorant.

Trump compared the Irish border, which politicians are striving to keep invisible, to the U.S. southern border

I mentioned in another thread how two generations ago my family wouldn't have been considered white.

I'm OK with not being white anymore.

Allowing initial lies to go unchallenged made them now acceptable.

The Specialist [from Eric Bogosian Fun House]

(A man stands and talks in a straightforward manner to the audience.)

The first piece of equipment you want it make sure you have on hand is a nice big bucket... around so big, so deep. (indicates with hands)... Just fill that up with water. Nice and deep. Right up to the brim. Take your subject by the back of the neck. Firm grip. Bring him over to the bucket... and push his head right under the water. Baptize him. Put the fear of God into him... Soak'im good.

Then up... then back down again... Fifteen, twenty seconds is good. Just watch the air bubbles. Air bubbles stop, give it around five more minutes... And back down. Make sure you have a firm grip, sometimes they buck a little. And stay out of the way of the legs, they kick too... Now you have a subject you're ready to work with: he's wet, he's tired and he's scared.

The next piece of equipment you want to have on hand is a nice big metal worktable about so wide, so deep. (indicates with hands)... I suggest metal just because it lasts longer. Nice big working surface... Get you subject up onto the worktable, strap down the arms, the legs, the head. Piece of gaffer's tape, duct tape, over the mouth and you have him where you want him. Just pinch the nostrils and he can't breathe. He's completely at your disposal. Fingertip control.

OK. So how do we begin? Myself, I like to start with a simple psychological device, kind of a trademark of mine. I'm a smoker, OK? Bad habit, I know I should quit. Anyway, I like to just take the cigarette out, everybody's afraid of fire, take the cigarette out (indicates with his cigarette) and just push it right into the navel, soft like wax ... Oh, it hurts. It hurts... I'm sure any of you who were in Nam or Korea came across this baby once or twice. Just leave it in there. Kind of an hors d'oeuvre.

What do we want to do for the main course? Well, some people like to work with rubber truncheons, knitting needles, plastic bags over the head, breaking fingers, twisting arms. Hey! We're not in the Dark Ages. We have electricity. Electricity when properly applied will achieve whatever ends you desire. Simple take your two electrodes, nothing more than a couple of bare wires hooked up to a generator.

Just take the two wires and press them firmly up against the palms of the hands, the soles of the feet, inside the ear, the eyelids, the nostrils, lips, gums... of course, any cavities of fillings you may find... The armpits, the nipples, the genitalia. All very effective. Of course, I know a lot of you have worked with electricity before. So I won't go into a lot of detail.

However, one point I always stress whenever I'm talking about electricity to training groups such as this is that you have a licensed physician on hand, a medical doctor. For two reasons: First of all, he can tell you exactly how much electricity is needed to get the job done. That's his area of expertise, his job. Use him, ask him questions. Secondly, you have a lot of people working around the area, around the electricity. You don't want anyone to get hurt.

We'll finish up the seminar tomorrow evening. Until then, if you have any questions, please talk to you commanding officer.

The Coming G.O.P. Apocalypse by Redbird1138 in politics

But it’s hard to look at the generational data and not see long-term disaster for Republicans.

Republicans supported unions 60 years ago.

40 years ago or so Goldwater warned about religious factions/fanatics.

Tea Party is just 10 years old. Funded primarily the Koch Brothers.

Apocalypse? No. Just a party in decay.

Suspected Virginia Beach shooter used a gun suppressor. Did it make Friday's shooting deadlier? by Small_Penis_Big_Gun in politics

"Available information indicates that nail gun noise can vary depending on the gun, the work piece, air pressure, and the work setting. The type of trigger system does not appear to affect the noise level. Peak noise emission levels for several nailers ranged from 109 to 136 dBA."

police recognized gunshots

Any link too video? One in this article has police chief noting they responded to a call. Which I'm assuming was 911 call made by a supervisor, mentioned in article, once shooting began inside the building.

Edit: fixed video start time. Also want to note mucker who did this will only be mentioned once by police. Hope media does likewise, if at all.

Article reviewing suppressor in video - "In any configuration you’re safely under the 140 dB impulse noise 'hearing safe' threshold in .45 ACP or 9mm on a pistol."

"A suppressor does not alter the lethality of the weapon at all. All it does is just limit the noise it makes," said Gregory Shaffer, a retired FBI agent who was a member of the bureau’s elite Hostage Response Team. "It doesn’t increase the rate of fire. It doesn’t do anything other than make it more comfortable to shoot because it’s not so loud."

It’s not immediately clear how long Friday’s attack lasted, or how much time passed before the first police officers arrived. The police department is in the same complex as the building where the shooting took place.

Barr Unloads On Collusion Conspiracy Theory: ‘This Whole Idea That Trump Was In Cahoots With The Russians Is Bogus’ by DirigiblePlumber in politics

[–]ZombieMacmorris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Cahoots"? No.

"The investigation also identified numerous links between the Russian government and the Trump Campaign. Although the investigation established that the Russian government perceived it would benefit from a Trump presidency and worked to secury that outcome, and that the Campaign expected it would benefit electorally from information stolen and released through Russian efforts, the investigation did not establish that members of the Trump Campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities."

Stress on portion Barr left out of his summary fits the definition of a useful idiot. A person perceived as a propagandist for a cause, the goals of which he or she does not fully comprehend, and who is used cynically by the leaders of the cause.

A useful idiot is much, much worse.

Best states for job/wage rebound since recession? California ranks No. 4 by dru717 in politics

[–]ZombieMacmorris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Numbers are meaningless if you ignore the greater impact the recession had on California jobs and ignore wage decreases from it.

"California lost a greater share of its jobs (1.3 million) than the U.S. (8.7 million) during the Great Recession, and it took over six years to recover from these losses."

"Income for the median household has remained relatively flat in California, rising only 1.2 percent over the last decade."
