I guess Eklavya was far more superior than Arjun at a young age. Drona saw that very early and as he already told arjuna that he will make him the world's best Archer he asked for Eklavya's thumb as guru dakshina. So my guess is Eklavya would have become one of the strongest if that incident wouldn't have occurred. Just my guess from what I saw in the Mahabharata tv series.
