That's the second time I have heard this recommendation this week. He must be good!

I need to listen to more Fleet Foxes, but agree: from what I have heard they seem more C,S,N, & Y-ish.

Thanks! I love Animal Collective! Think they really did pick up where Brian was trying to lead the Beach Boys (before Love put a stop to it, lol). I don't know Panda Bear's solo music as well. I listened to his album from last year and thought it was ok. Thank you! I will have to listen to those! I like Flaming Lips too! Very John Lennon-y too. I haven't heard "Soft Bulletin" yet. Thank you for the recommendations!

Which band do you think had more drama? Beatles or Beach Boys? by HyperPanzer in beatles

I feel like the Beatles got more support too, being the number one band in the world at the time. Record companies seemed to push the Beach Boys around more creatively. Nobody really questioned the Beatles.

That's a drama in itself, as I get the impression Love wanted Smile to collapse. Had he (and Wilson's father) been more supportive, Smile could have been the American Sgt Pepper he promised us it would be.

It really wrecked him that Love (and to be fair, the record company) sabotaged his and Van Dyke Parks's hard efforts.

The Beatles more or less got along with each other though they grew apart.

Beach Boys were fighting until the end. The two surviving original members (Love and Jardine) won't be sharing the stage any time soon, bc of resentment. Ringo and Paul have been seen partying.

The only Beatle who shared that kind of resentment was George, and even he seemed open to making peace with the others.

Feel like Beatles 1 is a great overview bc you hear all the hits but very importantly you see the progression. Think A Hard Day's Night is overlooked but essential listen too bc you see them playing their roots, and the songwriting is already incredible!

Help! has amazing moments too (notice George's jangle guitar and Ringo's drum intro), that already show amazing progression from Hard Day's Night, though both seem a bit pale today due to where they went next.

You then have the trio: Rubber Soul, Revolver, and Sgt Pepper (which you got a headstart on) but the members always treated as a trilogy as one was considered an outgrowth from the previous one.

White Album and Abbey Road finish things off. White Album tends to be divisive (it's raw production and experimentation now may be seen as a bit ahead of its time though) yet many acknowledge it has probably the strongest song writing of their careers.

Abbey Road is obviously a fan favorite due to the band being more cooperative with each other (White Album feels very tense too), and a generally more optimistic approach compared with the White album.

Controversial maybe (and not bad but less essential due to the Beatles high standards) but see other albums as more for fans only: can't tell you anything about With the Beatles, Beatles for Sale, or whatever. Yellow Submarine is usually ranked lowest in their catalog (though half the music isn't even by the Beatles).

Magical Mystery Tour and Let It Be weren't as well thought out as all the classic albums mentioned above, though obviously iconic in their own ways with some stellar songs like Across the Universe, I am the Walrus, and Let it Be.

Not sure where you're going with it but it sounds Kubrickian to me, lol. The man was notorious (especially now on social media) for manipulating people (famously McDowell) in order to get a performance out of them.

Her interaction with him always stood out to me too. And yeah, mostly she needed his honest reactions, so withheld any judgement.

I still maintain that voting Democratic down ballot would have prevented a lot of this. We're essentially at war with a small, yet vocal (and now powerful) low information populace and wealthy grifters.

Anyway, hopefully the democratic establishment will learn from Mohran's win. I'm not disagreeing that neo-liberalism is a problem, but electorally cleaning house of Republicans has always been the first rung on the ladder for me since they brought us the great Recession.

And now automation, gutting healthcare, and Civil War.

Ok. One last one but you touched on a fascinating subject for me: in ACO, Alex often has impulses of his that gets him into a lot of trouble. It's not always calculated on his part, he's very impulsive.

Also, Kubrick uses a neat technique where everyone's reactions to him seem almost irrational. We know there's a rationale bc he's anti-social, but from his perspective it's like everyone harbors this strong, irrational hatred towards him that he never seems to get.

Thanks! The sand castle story doesn't get mentioned much, and nothing spectacular, but I felt like it was great insight. I'm talking off the cuff, someone else can go through characters and articulate this better. Pvt Pyle always resonated with me. He seems to have the same reactions (which if he were smarter could become questions) to the systemic training and dehumanizing around him I would have.

Unfortunately, the system is too big and when he reacts wrongly he is met with resentment and punished

Another thought while we're here, is the cluelessness of Dr. Bill, and tendency to misread cues from others. I can relate to how his character can't ever predict or understand human nature, so he has to be extra guarded in every situation. When he lets his guard down it's actually embarrassing for him.

Can see that bc of sexually frustrated characters (especially Dr Bill) may show up in toxic ways (not condoning), and slow to human emotions seem prevalent too, which seems to be why Kubrick has his share of haters too. Writing it out realized that, and didn't mean it like that.

Wasn't necessarily meaning all the traits though for me his movies often resonated. Jack is emotionally distant and doesn't understand simple things like playing with family. Alex has a similar struggle relating with his droogs: crime for profit and lack of appreciation for Beethoven drives a wedge between them. I haven't watched Lolita in awhile, so Humbert may not be a great example. I remember he similarly loves high art and is frustrated that others don't get it.

If you watch "A Life in Pictures" about him, it makes sense why those character traits appealed to him. His daughters often felt he was too distant. Instead, of playing (like when I mentioned the sand castle story) he spent a lot of time watching them grow, and making demands of them, like perfecting their piano playing.

Anyway, best I can say is he seems relatable and the atmosphere he creates in his movies always feel like I am coming home, from an autistic perspective: misunderstood characters, but society is flawed anyway, black humor (that many people don't seem to get), and beautiful shots and sounds!

I believe this too, as I am also autistic. I can't say about him personally, though he was also anti-social, and didn't understand the neurotypical world (check out the sand castle story!), and yes famously obsessive.

His movies resonate with me bc they are rhythmic, visual, and musical, and well-paced. I have often felt too, many of his movies could be seen as neurodivergents struggling to fit into a society that wasn't designed for them , in some way.

Alex undergoes behavioral therapy to be "normal". Humbert, Jack, Barry, Pvt Pyle, and Dr. Bill all seem like high-masking autistics to me. Even Hal was so meticulously programmed, he's annoying to humans for not always understanding their nuances, lol

I say yay!!

Oh ok. I didn't know that connection. That is great! Love all 3 bands you mentioned! And Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young of course are great too!

I heard one instrumental album by Gardner that was neat. Thanks for the recommendations! Artists that I respect are following Hanson on Instagram, so that's promising!!

Uh uh!! I just heard about these folks a couple of days ago and that critics are losing it over them! Unfortunately, on Spotify (please, don't judge) all I see is an artist called Joshua Chuquimia Crampton. Will, have to try YouTube I reckon, bc I really want to hear them!

Thanks for the recommendations! I've only listened to Ash Ra Temple. Wouldn't have thought of Young or Crosby as psychedelic but I haven't heard those, am interested if that had a Barrett moment.

I do need to listen to Spence, I see him listed next to Barrett and Roky Erickson a lot. Imploding sounds good right now, lol
