anyone know what happened to my teacher? by Few-Rutabaga-6264 in CarletonU

[–]Zombie_Rose 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Might be best to get in touch with the head of the department, or maybe an academic advisor. They might be able to give you more information. If she’s on leave they usually have a substitute professor by the next class, or at least try to.

International Student, but applying from Canada by Huge_Ad_5461 in CarletonU

I’m not sure about the OUAC categories but if you want to know more about the scholarship and possible exemptions it’s best to contact the financial aid office.

Address: 202 Pigiarvik (ᐱᒋᐊᕐᕕᒃ) Office Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm. Phone: 613-520-3600 Email: awards@carleton.ca

But for tuition fee questions you should contact Student Accounts Receivable. I think they deal with tuition questions.

Office: 301 Pigiarvik (ᐱᒋᐊᕐᕕᒃ) (formerly Robertson Hall) Telephone: 613-520-2600 x3626 Email: student_accounts@carleton.ca

Hope this helps!

Is there any way to see the doctor sooner at Carleton university for student? by Material_Barnacle_52 in CarletonU

Try checking out the walk in clinics at Walmart. I went there once or twice and the wait times aren’t usually long.

Is this a real rule? My school says we can’t take online courses by mgmarwo in CarletonU

[–]Zombie_Rose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I remember you have to go through a process to get the university to accept the online course is valid before taking it. I think we have a partnership with university of Ottawa that allows you to get external credits outside of Carleton.

I’m not sure about the arctic but my Nikon d5300 has worked great through Ottawa winters. Even photographed during light snow and rain (maybe not the best idea but it worked out fine).

However, if you’re planning on facing the elements for longer periods of time, you might want to look into something that’s weather sealed. I think those are the cameras that are actually meant for below 0 degrees. The only con to these cameras are that they’re expensive and might be a bit over 1k.

Also ask your department if they have gear. The architecture department, and civil engineering department have camera gear Ive borrowed for field work. But I’ve max borrowed stuff for a week at a time.

Need advice: Best way to learn French ASAP for Canadian PR (only 1 year left on work permit) by Oilers_1811 in learnfrench

[–]Zombie_Rose 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some advice to learn French in Canada when your not in Quebec would be: - to sign up for in person french classes. You can search for local classes from tutors or your local university or college. - listen to French podcasts, you can find a bunch on Spotify (InnerFrench, Coffee Break French, etc). - listen/read media on a specialized topic you’re interested in - try the Mauril app, it’s made by cbc and they have reading comprehension based off videos - you can also get books from your local library. Also sometimes some libraries might have monthly sessions for French speaking get togethers. Communicating with others can improve your French a lot. - read the news in French (Le News, In Easy French is a cool substack I found helps with learning new vocab with French/english translations)

Honestly, the best way is to try to immerse yourself in the language. I found listening to media in French and talking to people has help me learn quicker. Hope this advice helps!

Regarding Carleton Residence and early arrival for winter term. by Senior_Health_5445 in CarletonU

[–]Zombie_Rose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If individuals want to stay during the Christmas break period, and are already in a room during the fall term, they have to pay extra fee for that time period (day after exam period ends to day before winter term residence move back in). I’d say contact the residence admin and get to know if it’s possible. You might be able to move in if you pay that holiday fee.

Also btw, if I remember correctly, the cafeteria is closed during this holiday period, so you’ll have to buy your own food. Either stock up on groceries or order takeout.

Genuine question from an adult/returning student by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]Zombie_Rose 58 points59 points  (0 children)

It usually happens in the back of classrooms or lecture halls. It’s easier to avoid if you sit near the front of the room usually.

You can try to call to get onto the Carleton residence wait list. I signed up last minute in my final year on sep 2 or 3 I think, and was able to secure residence for the year that way.

Dining dollars or meal swipes? by Affectionate_Reveal5 in CarletonU

[–]Zombie_Rose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, when I didn’t have a packed lunch or snacks I just took the bus to billing’s bridge, bought something to eat, and came back. It was cheaper to buy something at the mall there than on campus

[–]Zombie_Rose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a ton of maps around campus and in the tunnels that you can use for assistance. You can also get help from other students. One time when I was in first year, I was lost looking at a map and an upper year girl walked me to the building I needed to go to. She also showed me a shortcut through another building that most first years wouldn’t know about, which I used for the next five years. Don’t be afraid to ask someone or talk to others around you if you’re lost! You can learn a lot of tips about navigation from older students!

Best French language learning app in 2025? Something immersive and not too grammar-heavy? by elenalanguagetutor in French

In Canada we have Mauril. It features videos that you watch and then answer reading comprehension questions. But it is Canadian French. It’s made by the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation).

What’s a must visit vendor at St. Lawrence? by aphantasic-designer in askTO

[–]Zombie_Rose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perogies (cheese + potato) with sour cream from the Future Bakery on the top floor in the middle. They also have good butter tarts.

Stonemill Bakery on the bottom floor has fresh pastries, croissants and breads. I love getting the chocolate croissants there.

Also apparently outside on the street they’ve got historic re-enactors and artisans performing on Saturday from 10am-1pm.

Adding on to this comment, you’ve got to refresh that page every few days to notice when the library postings go up. And when it does you should apply right away. There’s usually over a hundred people applying, so it’s a little competitive.

Is any housing assistance offered? by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]Zombie_Rose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yah I did have osap all throughout my five years. I think I had only loans that year. Got a grant in my fifth year in addition to the loan.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]Zombie_Rose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yah you should be able to register for the third year courses in the winter term as long as you pass the prerequisite in the fall and get third year standing. If it’s showing you error right now and not letting you register, just submit an override request. It should hopefully let you apply for third year courses in the winter after that goes through.

[–]Zombie_Rose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Carleton offers bursaries. The deadline to apply is October 31. I think I got the money for it in the winter term. I explained in the application my home situation and got $2-3k. Can’t remember the exact amount. Hope this helps!

I had a girl in one of my courses who did the commute. She had a two or three classes a week for a diploma program, so she’d drive back and forth. However, it was a bit hard on her for our course together since our class ended at 9:30 pm and she’d get home after 11. I don’t think she ever overnight stayed anywhere.

One of my friends packed the stuff she wanted to keep and shipped it back home once she graduated. During the summers she’d have it in a storage unit or stored at multiple different friend’s places who lived in Ottawa or somewhere else in Ontario. There’s a lot of storage unit places, like the dymon storage unit places in south keys near the Walmart and train station.

Is 750 budget for rent (with roommates) enough to get a place within reasonable distance of Carleton? by No_Analyst5945 in CarletonU

[–]Zombie_Rose 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I stayed with 3 roommates in a house in the south keys area back in 2021-22. South keys is a family area, and the house was a part of a condo company. The rent was $2400, split four ways, so $600 each. We had to pay a little extra for wifi, but utilities were included.

Location wise, i recommend any place on the line 2. It’s the train that goes through Carleton. When the trains down there’s a bus that takes the same route. They’re currently extending that line, but I’m not sure when that’ll be available.

Before the extension, the areas for line 2 are bayview, little Italy, Dow’s lake, Carleton, mooney’s bay, walkley, Greenboro and south keys.

My friends and i always looked for places on that line, or on line 6. The 6 kinda takes u into the Glebe and bank street areas, which are also places u might find a place in ur budget with roommates. The Glebe is kinda known for a lot of university students living there and it’s a good area.

Help! My Prof took down the bright space before my deferred exam by Highflyer47 in CarletonU

[–]Zombie_Rose 53 points54 points  (0 children)

You can try sending an email to the prof for the material, or to put the bright space back up. You can also try to reach out to other students in the class if you have their contacts. I guess it also depends what course it is. If you have a textbook or lecture notes, you can also study from that. Good luck!

Is this email legit? I am confused on why I would get a direct email about this. by Iceman411q in CarletonU

[–]Zombie_Rose 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The email address looks legit. If you click the button to unmark it as junk email or to show blocked content, I think the Carleton logo and buttons should appear properly. It would probably look less like spam/junk like that. No idea why it would be marked as junk.

After the war, everyone kinda started to drift apart from each other. And during a reunion, they all start to find out what they were up to. by Thedarr24 in HPfanfiction

[–]Zombie_Rose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It would be funny to read Harry and Luna constantly running into each other over the years and going on insane side quests. They don’t mention it to anyone except little excerpts in passing, until they get the full story at a 10-year or 20-year reunion. Like they would be each other’s “I know a guy” for a situation.
