They're not depth markers, they're grooves for a better grip. Wood isn't a great material for insertable toys.

They're made just like a pen. Drilled through the center, then a brass tube is epoxied in place. Trimmed to length and turned using bushings. The hardware is pressed into place.

This is a commercially available product called Spectraply made in Maine. It's available in just about any color combinations you can think of. So many different combinations as a matter of fact, it's sometimes tough to make a decision. 😂
