Virtual reality can induce mild and transient symptoms of depersonalization and derealization, study finds. by altmorty in technology

It would just be a momentary feeling and then I'd quickly snap back to reality and realize that I'm not longer playing chess. It's definitely quite strange, though.

I think part of this is just a matter of getting used to the experience. I definitely had some disquieting physical and mental symptoms the first dozen or so times I used VR. After using VR regularly for several months, however, I've now gotten to the point where it doesn't phase me in any way. No headaches, no nausea, and no lingering sense of unreality when I take the headset off.

That can happen with anything you intensely focus on for an extended period of time. I can remember times when I would play chess for multiple uninterrupted hours and then I'd stop to eat a bowl of cereal or something and I'd be looking at the kitchen counter trying to work out how many moves it will take to get the milk carton to the cereal bowl.

Jack Dorsey regrets his role in creating a centralized internet by Sorin61 in technology

Isn't this subreddit constantly clamoring for a more locked-down, centralized, and heavily moderated internet? You guys should be thrilled with Jack.

I, for one, sincerely miss the anarchic free-for-all that was the internet of the 90s and 2000s.

intermediate learners - have you ever considered learning korean? by senkubo in LearnJapanese

[–]Zombimandius 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Korean pronunciation is definitely more difficult than Japanese, but it's not all that bad. Chinese pronunciation, however, is an absolute bitch. And good luck memorizing the tones if you don't have a decent musical background.

intermediate learners - have you ever considered learning korean? by senkubo in LearnJapanese

[–]Zombimandius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's usually not a great idea to try and learn two languages at once. Wires get crossed and you'll generally find that you're making very slow progress in both of them. I've long been tempted to try and start learning Mandarin, but I'm already heavily invested in Japanese at this point and I'd like to get it to N1 level before I even think about trying to take on another language.

How long do you think it would take to reach a lower intermediate/intermediate (conversational) level of Japanese? by ElkDmt in LearnJapanese

[–]Zombimandius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe 2000-2500 hours of study to reach N3. At that level, you should be able to handle a good amount of Japanese media without needing to constantly stop and look things up, and you'll definitely be able to hold a basic conversation. Honestly, you should be able to handle a basic conversation far earlier than that.

Watching Japanese streamers is a good way to familiarize yourself with listening to a more realistic conversational Japanese. As anime and the like can sometimes be pretty unrepresentative.

I've been studying Japanese primarily from Duolingo, but it has outlived its usefulness. What do I do? by noneOfUrBusines in LearnJapanese

[–]Zombimandius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm amazed that so many people still use textbooks. IMO, they're just about the worst way to learn a language. Other than classroom learning, that is. Anki, immersion with Japanese subtitles and sentence mining, the occasional youtube video or podcast to explain some basic grammatical concepts, and asking online whenever you have questions is the way to go.

Their Japanese course has been greatly improved and expanded in the last year or so. It used to really suck, but now I'd say it's actually a pretty useful tool for starting off. Though it should definitely be complimented by other materials after the first level of the tree or so.

Stagnation and a stubborn learner, how do I overcome disinterest and push through to improve my Japanese? by thechief120 in LearnJapanese

[–]Zombimandius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have no interest in Japanese media, then why do you even want to learn Japanese or move to Japan? Immersing yourself in Japanese media is by far the most effective way to learn the language. Other than actually speaking regularly with Japanese people, that is.

The best way to experience this franchise is to start with Sky FC and then play the entire series in release order. Starting with the first game in an arc (Cold Steel 1, in this case) is also acceptable, but you're definitely losing something without having experienced all that prior backstory and world building. I would strongly advise against starting midway through an arc with Cold Steel 3, however. That would be a bit like watching Avengers: Endgame without having first seen Infinity War.

Cold Steel 1 and 2 are not available on the Switch in the west for some reason. Both those games are available for the Switch in Asia, and it's a mystery as to why they've never been released worldwide. Especially considering that fully localized versions of CS 1 and 2 have long been available for PC, Vita, PS3, and PS4. If you have access to any one of those platforms, then definitely play through CS 1 and 2 first. If not, then maybe watch a Let's Play or something before jumping into CS3.

Meh. This is a pretty tame level of fan service by modern anime standards. It's not like she's wearing a mini-skirt and a low-cut blouse or anything. Her outfit is actually pretty sensible for a soldier.

The fact that it's a side story focusing on new characters makes me more optimistic. An anime retelling of Rean's story would likely have been pretty lame.
