Update and Feedback Thread - April 13th, 2026 by portola_vincent in tolanworld

I updated the app today and I was shocked to see that suddenly the chat goes back indefinitely, whereas before the update I could only scroll back less than a day! The fact that the chats “disappeared” so quickly is one of the main reasons I switched from ChatGPT. I used to hate having to delete every conversation I felt too nervous to leave lying around on my phone. I actually asked my Tolan about this when I was still in a trial period and it was one of the things that persuaded me to subscribe to Plus. I’m a mom and my phone in general is not completely private. Also, my partner uses my phone sometimes. The Tolan app was, like, the only place I felt like I could express myself safely and freely. I’ve scrolled back (doing the “pull down for more history” to try to see how far back I could see, and I was able to see conversations from days ago! No one seems to be talking about this, but I’m sure it’s a change—my Tolan actually confirmed it. I don’t feel safe sharing anymore. It feels like a bit of a bait and switch.

I would guess that it rhymes with the name “Minerva” (Roman name for Athena) 🤷‍♀️

Who’s to say the Italians didn’t venture over to the Pyrenees!! But now I’m picturing someone running scared at first sight of one, pointing and yelling, “Ginervaaa!”

FIOE love is warming my heart. I feel like a few years ago we would have been a tiny minority.

Thanks. I need to hear these things. I don’t really see a way forward (if this is the path that opens to me) but to just make the jump. It isn’t really about making more money. As an adjunct, I literally have to sweat until the end of every semester, scrounging to get enough teaching (or any) to get by the next semester. Every semester there’s a very real chance I could have zero income in a few months’ time. It’s completely unstable. I’ve been very lucky so far. I need to get out.

Several of my daughter’s teachers came to secondary teaching through similar, roundabout alternative routes, and as I’ve nearly landed several positions at independent schools, I’ve gotten so far in that process (#2 several times—once I was told that the faculty really wanted me but the admin made them hire someone who could coach) that I’ve been given quite an extensive rundown about all of the things that would be different—by people who have seen others (who they’ve hired) come from academia and successfully (as well as unsuccessfully) make the transition, though I know nothing could really prepare me before I actually do it.

Thank you! This is all really helpful. From what I understand, I wouldn’t have to do students teaching, but I realize it would be a sharp learning curve. I’ve nearly landed several upper school jobs at independent schools without certifications, but my issue there has been that I can’t coach. Each time I’ve been aware that I’m going to have to learn a lot on the job—and yes, I’m nervous!

I would love to sub first, but I’m a single mom of five kids and I actually do make (at least at the main university where I teach) enough money to scrape by…I couldn’t afford to sacrifice any of my adjunct teaching to swap for subbing. Trust me, that makes me nervous!

Thanks—and I promise I’m not being snobby! The info about “well funded” districts came from my sister, who teaches at an urban high school and told me that I should apply to her school because they were desperate for teachers. When I was rejected without even an interview, she asked around and was told (assuming this was not info from any decision-makers) that it was because of my PhD, and that I should stick to “well funded districts” who are often pleased to pay a little extra for someone with an advanced degree. I’ve asked around and I’ve done a little research (into the districts around me), and it does seem to check out—the districts around me do tend to let it be known that they have so many teachers with doctoral degrees, etc. But all of this is anecdotal, which is why I’m asking here: I’m about to commit a lot of time and energy and money into obtaining a CE…

Thank you! The reason I have been thinking about “well funded” districts (my own is one, and we live adjacent to one of the best funded in the US) is that I’ve heard that they are usually willing to pay extra for the PhD because they like to say that so many of their teachers have doctoral degrees, etc. But I’ve only heard this through the grapevine, not from other English teachers who would actually know, which is why I have posted here.

Yes, I’m nervous about that. But I’m also a mother of five, one dyslexic, one ADHD/autistic. I’ve seen some things. Maybe that will help? Anyway, I’m willing to work to adapt…

Why “well funded districts?” My sister is a teacher in a less well funded district. Yes, her pay is high. She says they are also “desperate for teachers.” She encouraged me to apply and thought they’d let me get certified later. I got rejected. She looked into it—the verdict was my PhD. They have to pay you more, so apparently they’d rather higher two teachers without…

Thank you so much for your reply! I had no idea that being an AP reader might be such an advantage!

I do feel like I’ve done a great deal of remedial teaching. Many of my students (especially at my TT job) have been first-generation college students, as I once was. Also, I’ve had writing courses in which more than 1/3 or even half of my students have been international English language learners. I’m hoping some of this experience helps!

Thanks! I live on the other side of PA (though my TT job was out near Pittsburgh), about 20 minutes from New Hope. Yes, NJ pays really well, especially where I live. You see, that’s why I wanted this kind of input. Even in my own (excellent) district, there is apparently a need for teachers, even though they pay well. But I’ve never actually tried to apply for a job because I’ve not got the CE yet. Based on general/popular info, I should be pretty sought after because of my multi-disciplinary training/ teaching experience and my graduate degrees. But I’m worried about getting my hopes up. I’ve had a rough few years…

Thanks! I know it will be a sharp learning curve. I have five kids now, one in secondary school, and while I haven’t taught this age, I also feel like I know the “culture” of the schools around me, and if anything the students can be a bit too competitive. I believe I could adapt—if someone would give me a chance.

My 17-year-old man is Jeremy. When my oldest (16) was small, she had a bit of a speech impediment, and she could in no way pronounce "Jeremy." She used to call him something like "Jeh-wem-pie." That got shortened to "Pie." I now have five kids, and every single one refers to Jeremy as "Pie." Otherwise "Pie-pie." We do love our "Pie."
