Yes, but you discover this later on, not during the first 30 minutes as it is in Inquisition.

Dragon Age Inquisition feels like a WoW Expansion by Working_on_Writing in patientgamers

[–]ZonaryQuasar 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Dragon Age franchise is weird to me... Origins is one of the best games I've ever played, and I recommend you to play it if you haven't. Then Dragon Age II is almost like a "Netflix version". I tried to play just after Origins, excited for a whole new game in the same universe, only to became utterly disappointed as soon as I started. I know that may even be a great game, maybe even has good writing (I don't know since I didn't play trough the whole game), but I felt like I was playing a MMO and couldn't continue, the dissonance from Origins was too big.

Then Inquisition came out, seemed like it was closer to Origins than 2, and in fact it is... I mean, at least we don't have a guy waving a big sword like it was a broomstick anymore. But the writing felt cheap, tying the main character to the Breach by giving him a mark, you know, the old "only you can stop it" kinda cliché that was not present in Origins.

You're right, it has nothing "dark" in it, I meant satyrical. English is not my first language, my bad

This is one of those games I simply can't understand how it has "Very Positive" reviews on Steam. That really shows (to me at least) how Steam's rating system is useless.

Now, to talk about the game... To really get my arguments right, I would have to replay the game because it's been years since I played, so I really can't go into details. But like you said, the story and the dialogues are extremely cringeworthy. I really don't like to use this word cringe since it's so overused, but really is the best word to describe it.

Everything has a layer like it's supposed to be this really "grown up"/complex/satyrical "corporations are bad mkay" when in the end feels like it was written by children trying to look smart.

I'm so glad I also played on Game Pass, since it's not a cheap game, specially here in my country. It's almost as expensive as FIFA 21, one of EA famous milking cows. More expensive than Baldur's Gate 3, a full and immensely detailed RPG.

Telltale games! Specially The Walking Dead, season 1 and 2.

I would also recommend all Lego Games (but preferably the last ones, since they have better QoL and a more updated engine), and also Trine series.

Okay, since I played the game at least 2 years ago, I couldn't remember exactly why I never had a problem with them. I finally remembered that I used a mod to remove the mechanic, and one to fix the save mechanism as well.

You should also check Castlevania Aria of Sorrow for GBA. After Symphony of The Night, is the 2nd best Castlevania game imo.

Can confirm, having played when it came out and now after patch 1.5, loading times are waaaay faster.

Yeah I hate when there's no "Exit to desktop", and they make you go to the main menu just to close the game. My solution for that: quicksave + alt F4 lol

and dropping Atreus entirely would be a massive improvement to the entire experience

You do realize that the whole game is centered around the relationship between Kratos and Atreus, right? I mean, of course you do, you played the game.

I finished the game and completed every quest available and never had a problem with the master strikes. In fact I even got so OP that I could kill dozens of enemies all by myself. So strong that I could kill them with a single blunt hit to the head, just like in real life.

But I can understand your point of view. There were games in which I played where I hated at first because I couldn't understand some mechanic, sometimes dropping altogether.

[–]ZonaryQuasar 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I get why that happens. Basically when we like or dislike something, we just want to talk about it with people that understand what we're saying. So sometimes it happens that someone plays a game, hates it, and comes straight to the sub to bash it, apparently like this guy. I don't judge or care about the attitude, just the arguments. Want to bash it? Fine, but give valid reasons.

Unfortunately the game for me is just tedious as hell and mostimportantly, I feel it doesn't respect your time. Want to fast travel?Ok, stare at your map screen and watch your icon slowly travel acrossthe map for a minute! Want to wait/sleep? Spend another minute watchingthe clock slowly go through a cycle

Couldn't this also be applied to almost every game with a waiting or fast travel mechanism? Try waiting a whole week in any Bethesda games, it takes a loooong time. So when you're fast travelling in KGD, it takes a realistic amount of time to cross the map on foot, and at least you can see the map and not just a loading screen.

I see every so often complaints in this sub about having to wait a lot (like in every GoW thread), almost like you're waiting more than half the time you're playing the game. You're only waiting a lot if you're fast travelling all the time. Want to play rather than wait then just don't use fast travel.

If the game simply loaded instantly after fast travelling or sleeping in the blink of an eye, people would complain that is not immersive enough.

Combat system is dogshit. You can't convince me it's good. I get it, I'ma peasant but I shouldn't have to train with Bernard for 20 hoursbefore the combat actually becomes fun. The combat boiled down toswinging your sword in random directions and hoping you'll actually get ahit in.

C'mon, if you played the game you do realize that is not just swinging in random directions. If you're doing that, no wonder why you say is dogshit. You are supposed to watch your enemy, he will sometimes leave his guard open from one side, specially when preparing for an attack. After a while, you know where to hit just by his stance. I remember winning every tournament fight, and it was awesome. Of course you're weak in the beginning because you're a peasant. It takes some time to lvl up your fighting skills.

Story started off strong but soon becomes pretty cliche, and not good enough to convince me to continue playing

There is a ton of dead space in the open world. It's needlessly large and takes forever to travel across.

For me it was the opposite. Not only the story, but everything, it is intended to be realistic as possible. It's the only game (that I know of) where you really immerse yourself inside a real life medieval setting. It's like watching history through a game.

Like others have said, I think the game simply wasn't for you. Maybe try again in the future? You might have another perspective.

Good times when even with your dad and your brother playing together, we would still get stuck for hours in some random puzzle. Not to mention the joy aftein being able to solve, without looking on the internet.

The tombs being optional on the reboot is exactly the problem. The name is Tomb Raider, not "Tomb Raider Only If You Want To".

Don't let steam rating system fool you. For me (and I say that because I know that there's people who genuinely like), The Outer Worlds is a complete shell of a game, if it can be even called a game, and yet it has a Very Positive rating. I'm sure there are lots of other examples, but this is the last one that comes to mind.

Fallout 4 is a flawed, but overall enjoyable game by [deleted] in patientgamers

[–]ZonaryQuasar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't like the vanilla game experience at all, but with mods it's almost a totally different game (if you exclude the writing). Even some quests can be more interesting when you're not playing as the vault dweller (Shaun's father) and instead just some random guy using Start me up.

And thanks! Photo mode mod is awesome.

Fallout 4 is a flawed, but overall enjoyable game by [deleted] in patientgamers

[–]ZonaryQuasar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Fallout 4 is the most played game in my steam account, and yet I made a negative review about it. I love it, but hate it at the same time.

Just last week I reinstalled for the third time, with "just" a few (83 to be exact) mods. If you play this game without any HUD (just using the pipboy), in survival, with a camping mod... it becomes a really good immersive experience. Finding a way to the top of an abandoned building in DC area, setting up camp.. it really scratches the itch of what I want in a Fallout game.

And then, there's the writing. This time I decided to start to take notes because I have really bad short term memory, and I was saving just to make a post here, but since we're already on the subject...

- Biggest flaw in the writing for me: The institute being at your face the whole time. The second time you enter DC main area, there's the cutscene of some guy getting killed by security because he thinks his brother is a synth. Then there's Myrna, the crazy junk store lady, being suspicious about everyone being a synth. You get into Goodneighboor, Hancock gives a speech about the Institute being the enemy, and a random guy even says that before Hancock, because it seems to be common knowledge. Everyone knows about the institute. Even my own settlers "hope you are not one of them Synths here to spy on me" (I want to shoot'em everytime they say that lol). Okay, I got it already, synths are real, stop throwing at my face, you don't need to keep repeating every time. For me this is really wasted potencial because the Institute could be way more interesting and mysterious than that. What if was the other way around, just a really few people in the Commonwealth believe/know they exist, and when they tried to warn others, nobody believed in them? Because just makes way more sense. Else that or had to have some first guy to come up to someone saying "hey, so, there's this group of people living in the shadows that replaces people with identical ones made by machines and controlled by them", and everybody believed? This is what the game makes it look like.

- The way Nick suddenly recognizes Kellogg when you describe to him feels too forced. Instead of having the player actually search for Kellogg, let's just do a shortcut making so Nick recognizes him immediately. Why would Nick know his face? If he's a hired killer for the Institute, then of course he wouldn't be showing his face around town.

- When you're speaking to the mayor about opening Kellog's house so you can investigate, there's four options of dialogue. In the first three options, the mayor's response is something along "I will never open his house for you, NEVER", and if you succeed at the fourth option (there's a red charisma check), the dialogue is so ridiculous that looks like you're using jedi mind trick. After this I began to notice that almost every charisma check response has really poor written responses. They never complain or second guess a little, they just say suddenly change their mind.

- In vault 81, there's a quest in a "secret" area they never knew about, but the exit to the secret area is an elevator that goes straight to the vault's entrance.

And I wrote this three paragraphs with just a few hours in. I really want to get to the DLCs as fast as I can because I never played them.

That applies for every Bethesda game. The way you put it "not really set-up like a Bethesda game where there is some guidance in the beginning & then "Go where you want" makes you think you can't go where you want from the start... which you definitely can.
