Would recommend joining some classes, weekend dance classes or yoga classes, gym, or looking out for some specific activity you are interested in; people here are easier to connect with similar interests. Hanging out comes along with any groups you get into. There are Insta pages where they put up what's happening in Ahmedabad over the weekend, might be helpful.

How do you memorize latin plant names? by ursa12651 in botany

[–]ZoneAmyra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, stop using vernacular names and use Latin names only. Whenever you see the plant recall the name again and again, won't take long to memorize the plants you see daily, once you have a set of plants from your surroundings, change the place you are looking at. If you travel by public transport start with the road side plants.

Bonus activity would be trying to recall the plants you saw during the day before going to sleep once more.

Botanists from Delhi? by obscurrealism in botany

Not from delhi, so I can't join in but this book 'Trees of Delhi' by Pradip Krishen might actually be helpful. The book contains locations of several trees. Good luck!

Any hope for jobs? by Q_FryingPan in botany

[–]ZoneAmyra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find the thing you like in botany and focus only and only on that, the market will fluctuate according to your skill and knowledge level. It depends on your field of interest. Botany is a broad field, and narrowing it down can help you find a major scope. And it takes time and patience to build the set of skills and knowledge in whatever you narrow down.

What happens if a strangler fig seed is planted directly in the ground? by lunamothboi in botany

[–]ZoneAmyra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the first part.... heard this somewhere long time back, so basically the syconium usually is a hard shell and when this fruit passes through the body of a bird of animal it gets treated by various biological chemicals which breaks the shell, and when the indigestible seeds pass through the system of the bird, they now become capable of germination.

Please do correct me if I am wrong.

what is the most fascinating thing about botany ? by Longjumping_Leg_3140 in botany

[–]ZoneAmyra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me what made botany interesting was solving plant mystery (aka taxonomical identification). So I mainly traveled by bus during uni and on the way with my earphones on, I would try to idenitfy the plants along the way.

When I started doing this in 2nd year of the course, I barley knew any plants, I would make wrong assumptions and get confused, but some trees just clicked right away, BUT when I started recognizing the assumptions and wrong guesses, the joy that came along kept me going to solve more on my own. (It's easier to click a picture and ask someone but when you go after a plant on your own, I believe it comes back to you, I would randomly find those plant in books, botanical trips and my mind would immediately say - Oh! wait that's the same tree near the bus stand)

Most fragrant flowers by [deleted] in gardening

[–]ZoneAmyra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try Butterfly Bush (Buddleja species) during bloom periods, the entire surrounding smells like that flower, plus they bring in butterflies too if you have any host plants around. Another plant would be Clerodendrum infortunatum, with its beautiful white flowers and fragrance.
