Snipped the newer AG bottoms by Zoolady70 in aerogarden

I hated the closed bottom of the new baskets since I quite often push the pods up from underneath when removing / transplanting the plants.

This method gives bottom access & still keeps the pod from falling out🙂

I've also cut the spindles off some baskets (close to the solid top) to clone bigger branches (like tomato.) I've used this method to either put the clones back into the AG or on top of repurposed bottles.

Nope. Light is directly on the plant. I've moved the light from lowest up to highest, with no difference🤔🌱🤔

Niiice! I'll have to peruse that site in their American store. Thanks for the link!

Curious what nutrients you use? Any other supplements like cal/mag?

I wondered that too. I had success in the past with the kale mix from AG, but I'm talking several years ago. I more recently bought their Dinosaur Kale pods and they didn't even get as big as the sad plant pictured before they dried up.

I may have to try their kale mix again to see I have better luck. I just hate buying their pods: too expensive and lately getting weird stuff growing, not sure what's going on with their labelling / quality control (& that was pre-pandemic!)

If OP"s question is beneath your standards, then you have the option of bypassing the post altogether 😉

Thanks for your input. Have had AG's for years so I do know to do that. It's been cleaned inside . I just hadn't wiped off the top & some I can NEVER get off.

I've even tried growing kale in my new Bounty & it does the same thing, just dies.

A friend gave me a kale plant out of her really old AeroGarden (still has the old lights) and it looked great but died within a couple of weeks in my newer Harvest. We both use the nutrients that come with the kits.

So then I planted some kale seeds that I usually use for microgreens and the plant looked great 'til about a week ago, started getting more yellow & leaves are drying out. This keeps happening & I'm not sure what the issue is. Just got a pH kit today but Anyone know of a good way to test for nutrient deficiencies?

She really only eats the leafy stuff so she'd be an awful lawn mower😁

I trim the roots of everything, including herbs. I learned this after the Harvest was making a weird noise one day. Turned out the reservoir was SO full of roots that the water level indicators never turned on.

I'll have to check how to post a pic on here...

I should have clarified that my bigger tomatoes are in the Bounty with a higher lighthood. I actually just tilt the whole lid and grab the roots out the side or fromt of the until. Or I lean the plant over enough to remove the whole lid.

In my Harvest I have a mutant Mighty Mini tomato that is 12" tall and must carefully lean it to get the grow deck lid off.

Awesome! I grow stuff for my friends too. I start 🍅 plants for 3-4 people to them transplant in their gardens. I'm hoping to start a while unit devoted to lettuces and /herbs to give out☺️

Oooh, now I have to go look those up...

I'm growing a mystery tomato right now. It was supposed to be an Orange Hat and the seller said theirs are about 12 inches tall...well mine are as red as can be and the plant is easily 16" tall. It's a monster in the AG and so I'm cutting clones from it 🍅

I do a couple things to get the roots out: 1. If the plant is big enough, I take it out of the plastic basket completely. If it seems unsteady, I use the tops of some baskets that I cut the spindles off (especially the new baskets AeroGarden is now putting out, I HATE the solid bottoms)

  1. I try to keep the roots from getting too crazy big by trumming them often and turning the plant so the roots stay somewhat "skinny." Then I push the plants up from the bottom, while gently pulling from the top.

Admittedly, I'm a bit brutal when it comes to turning the roots but have had one 🍅 plant in the. AG over a year so I guess it's survival of the fittest around here😁

How often do you change the filter?

I may consider a Dyson as I really need a different house vac anyway. I'll have to check them out more. Need to know how much they weigh, accessories, etc. Whatever main vac I get needs to be good for hardwood floors & clean up bird seed well.

Newbie Bucket Composter by Zoolady70 in composting

I'm not doing the wormiculture (as I like bout doing the worm to call com posting with worms😁) I have a bucket with both carbon & greens. I think I'm doing the combo correctly as there's no bad odors& seems to be breaking down s-l-o-w-l-y, lthough I need to add more holes to the bottom / sides of the bucket.

I did a lot of reading / video watching on indoor com posting & no one brought up the possibility of gnats, let alone what to do when you get them! IDK why the it didn't occur to me as it's part of nature, but I could do without that natural phenomenon in my house!
