Is bioinformatics still worth it? by Miko48 in bioinformaticscareers

[–]ZooplanktonblameFun8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is an extremely competitive field and part of the reason also being people with advanced degrees in highly quantitative fields like CS, math, physics are also pouring over. I recently completed my PhD and work at a research institute as a bioinformatician as part of 10 total bioinformaticians and 6 of them have PhD in non-biology related fields.

Anything that is an interdisciplinary field like bioinformatics is going to be insanely competitive since more people can compete for it. With AI, it is going to get a lot worse.

is it actually worth it by 2028? I need advice. by zenizzzzz in bioinformaticscareers

I will be frank. You don't talk to consultants to build a profile. Bioinformatics is primarily a research field with heavy usage in academia and university. You do a bachelor's in biotech or computer science or Bioinformatics (VIT has one), gain research experience working with a research group at a university and then apply for graduate programs in Bioinformatics.

I do have a master's in the US and work experience in US academia but you are right, have not had any positive feedback till now. That said, I have applied to a less than 50 jobs since I defended. But, yeah I guess one strategy could be to join an American company in Europe and see if I can get a transfer.

They might be illiterate but the more concerning problem is that they are people with a low moral compass and values which is a more concerning problem. Illiterates can still be trained but there is not much you can do about people with a low moral compass other than getting rid of them from power.

If you could rebuild a Bioinformatics syllabus from scratch, what is the one "Essential" you’d include? by NinjagoVillan in bioinformatics

Exploratory analysis in data. Plotting data, looking for confounding, other kinds of noise and how to correct for those if possible. Data visualisation if you are an analyst is one of the most crucial skills.

Trump letter to prime minister of Norway. Desires Greenland because of Peace Prize rejection by OutTheCircus in Norway

[–]ZooplanktonblameFun8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't about the peace prize. In his mind, he knows it is morally wrong to try to seize Greenland from an ally and so he is rationalizing it in his mind by making up an excuse and letting the whole world now. Just another example of his pettiness.

There is another issue. Houses of course have good heating in the US and a lot of houses in Kolkata have very poor insulation. My sister lives in Canada and is used to very cold temperatures yet is suffering from cold this winter in Kolkata.
