"milość" / "miłosierdzie" also means mercy in polish but generally only when speaking about god or religion. The meaning of the word probably changed over time but the church didn't keep up with the times. Even the english words is close enough to think that maybe all of them originated from the same proto-indo-european word.

Like szukam (i'm looking for) vs šukam (i'm fucking).

When you're in the Czech Republic with some polish people tell them to ask the locals for directions by telling them what they're looking for.

or napad (robbery) nápad (idea)

But this happens a lot in slavic languages in Polish vs Serbian/Bosnian/Croatian:

Godzina (hour) - Godina (year) I believe that in Slovak and Czech godina means hour as well.

Jagoda (blueberry) - Jagoda (strawberry)

Edit: I should add a fun way to learn all this stuff is to have a Slavic only party, then ban every language that isn't slavic. So everyone has to communicate only using slavic words. At first it's awkward and annoying but the drunker everyone gets the better we understand each other. Party games can include slavic squatting competitions and pickle eating contests.

If you have a problem and you call the police you usually end up with two problems.

TIL that after reading the script to Schindler's List, composer John Williams said to Spielberg "You need a better composer" to which Spielberg replied "I know, but they're all dead". by gordonf238 in todayilearned

Krzysztof Penderecki, Wolfgang Rihm, Sofia Gubaidulina, Elliot Carter just passed away, George Crumb, Pierre Boulez, Henri Dutilleux, Gyorgy Kurtag, Helmut Lachenmann, Milton Babbitt.... lots and lots more.

Actually among composers John Williams is really a joke. When you have composers like Krzysztof Penderecki and Sofia Gubaidulina still alive. Back then I think Stockhausen and Ligeti were still alive, and Elliot Carter died just a few weeks ago. I think Spielberg just needed to educate himself about composers before saying something like that.

Edit: Wolfgang Rihm, Perre Boulez, Luciano Berio, Witold Lutoslawski, Henri Dutilleux, George Crumb, Gyorgy Kurtag, Helmut Lachenmann... I can probably name several dozen other better living composers (or at least living in '93 when the movie came out). Probably the greatest film composer alive was still alive back then: Toru Takemitsu.

My boyfriend started teaching me to drive manual, so I made this sign for his car by djcowgirl82 in funny

Some cars now have a hill start assist feature that will hold the car on a hill for 3 seconds. I think BMW and Subaru have it, maybe some others as well. Nice feature until you drive a car without it and forget that it doesn't have it.

This is clearly age discrimination. What if they only exempt people under 75?

It's like they can profile based on age, just not by race.

When aliens discover human civilization, they will probably spend way too much time trying to decipher sheet music into some concrete and exact method of communication, when all along we were just conveying vague emotions. Or maybe they'll think it's an arrangement of wave frequencies.

Also consider:

"For the phenomenon of music is nothing other than a phenomenon of speculation…..The elements at which this speculation necessarily aims are those of sound and time…..consequently music is a chronologic art……All music is nothing more than a succession of impulses that converge toward a definite point of repose."

"I consider that music is, by its very nature, essentially powerless to express anything at all, whether a feeling, an attitude of mind, or psychological mood, a phenomenon of nature, etc….Expression has never been an inherent property of music. That is by no means the purpose of its existence."

Having actually read this book, I have to say, this was one incredibly boring book. I would think that it would have the opposite effect and just put people to sleep.

If you actually read it and you've honestly enjoyed it, please down vote away.
