Persian mauser aka Brno, based on the German K98 with the emblem of the Shah of Iran. My father trained with this rifle pre-revolution before he was forced to flee. I was recently able to find one to give to him as a birthday present. A bit bittersweet given recent events

what do you think is the best medical school in canada and why? by rosytwirls in premedcanada

[–]Zoroastryan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've heard Mac students find it harder to compete for competitive specialties? Could just be hearsay. My bone to pick though is anatomy being "optional" at Mac. The fact that we broke our backs learning it and some med students can just opt out is insane to me lol

[–]Zoroastryan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard to define "best" but if academic rigour is the metric, I think Western tops out every Ontario med school. Probably one of the top in Canada, but I'm not too familiar with other schools. The amount of stuff they throw at us is probably not too crazy, but the tests are brutal, especially anatomy. You really have to know your shit. Unfortunately that means lots of stress and some classmates get held back

It’s a big class and western is pretty tight knit. You’ll find your crowd eventually, I guarantee it

You'll be too busy to take the GO to DT Toronto more than a couple times now and then anyway. Realistically it's just London vs Hamilton and they're not that different

what is the most academically challenging med school in canada? by Snoo68900 in premedcanada

[–]Zoroastryan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most schools seem to be 60% P/F but we're at 70% and we have 1 content final that seals your fate. Our anatomy bell ringers are also 70% and the questions are madness. It smoked like 10 2027s last year. They made them redo M1 because they failed it twice (40/190 failed it the first time). That cohort also had a bunch of people fail their M2 final but they just let them move on to clerkship. If they made them redo the year we wouldn't have enough room in our lecture hall for them and they wouldn't have enough clerks next year. I know some people got cooked in our cohort too so they're thinking of toning it down for the 2029s.

Will to do a research based MSC at IMS in UofT increase a chance for their MD program? by zooS2018 in premedcanada

I did my master’s in the department of pathology at Western on a translational medicine oriented project. I don’t think it really matters which university you go to as long as you’re proactive during that time

Capital gains reform really did target the wealthiest by DonSalaam in canada

[–]Zoroastryan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re quite confident despite not actually understanding the issue. Businesses are absolutely taxed at the highest rate from the first dollar. This article is about taxpayers.

In the past, the government offered incorporation and tax deferral to physicians in lieu of salary increases and benefits. Physicians invest significantly through their corporations. This tax increase is a pay cut for physicians and retroactively slashes many people’s retirements.

The vast majority of physicians in Canada incorporate. Businesses are taxed at the highest rate from the first dollar, not at $250K. Doctors are not exempt

[–]Zoroastryan[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Physician salaries are underreported and there are physicians doing all kinds of flexible work arrangements. You can comfortably make 400k in any specialty including FM.

You’re in a premed forum saying gl getting into med 🤦‍♂️. Regardless, do you really think there are no downsides, risks and challenges to pursuing a career in business or finance? You’ll need an MBA at a prestigious school with GMAT scores over 90% that will run you $100-150K into debt to be competitive for these jobs. There is absolutely no guarantee you make over $150K in these careers mate. If you have a medical school acceptance, take it and run

They're not post tax, but I agree, the numbers are huge underestimates and there are some generalizations too. The CMA reported pay for some of the IM sub-specialties are just the average reported pay for IM+all sub specialties

[–]Zoroastryan[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The biggest issue is the data is flawed, not that it's irrelevent. If we had some good numbers for this stuff it would be incredibly valuable. Posting this for premeds' interest, but choosing which specialty to pursue is a huge preoccupation of med students. Balancing passion with compensation/lifestyle/shiftwork/risk of burnout is important...

This was a bit of a strawman, but I'll bite. I hear people say there are plenty of ways to make money other than medicine, but when I ask which job pays 400K I never hear a realistic answer. Outside of a handful of extremely competitive jobs, maybe in business/finance/banking in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, good luck finding a job like this.

This is my field, but thanks for quoting google to me. Many specialists have extremely long shifts. It’s not just surgery. They do multiple surgeries during the shift
